Process for the preparation of phthalic anhydride-p-sulfonic acid. According to the process of main patent no. 150612, the sulfonation of phthalic anhydride to phthalic anhydride-p-sulfonic acid can be carried out by heating with sulfuric anhydride under pressure.
It has now been found that the sulfonation of phthalic anhydride to form phthalic anhydride-ss sulfonic acid can also be carried out without pressure if phthalic anhydride is heated with sulfuric anhydride to temperatures below 2000 ° C., the temperature rise being regulated so that only a little sulfonating agent distills off.
Since sulfuric anhydride is highly volatile, it was to be assumed that if phthalic anhydride were heated with the entire amount of sulfuric anhydride required for sulphonation to temperatures well above the boiling point of the sulphonating agent, the same would distill off without prior sulphonation .
Surprisingly, however, it has been shown that with suitable heating, the vapor pressure of the sulfonating agent increases so slowly that even at temperatures which are significantly above the boiling point of the sulfuric acid anhydride, only such a small amount of sulfonating agent is distilled off that a Sulfonation occurs.
The new method has the significant advantage that it leads to the goal at a relatively low temperature and using simple sterile equipment. Another advantage of the process is that the excess sulfuric anhydride can be removed by simply distilling off; optionally under reduced pressure or using a stream of dry air, recovered from the reaction mixture who can. The sulfonation product remaining in the reaction vessel is sufficiently pure for further processing, so that purification, for example by transferring it to the salt form, can be omitted.
Example: 103.5 parts by weight of phthalic anhydride and 168 parts by weight of sulfuric anhydride are heated in a heating bath of 60-650 until the phthalic anhydride has almost completely dissolved.
It is then heated slowly, for example within 6 hours, to 130-140 and held at this temperature until the sulfonation is complete. A pale yellow colored sulfonation product is obtained, from which the sulfophthalic acid can be separated off by dissolving in water and salting out.
To prepare the free sulfophthalic anhydride, the excess sulfuric anhydride can be distilled off by heating. A tough, light yellow mass is then obtained which can be used immediately for further processing, for example for esterification.
