Process for the production of a vat dye. The main patent specifies a process for the production of a vat dye in which an agent capable of replacing oxygen with chlorine is allowed to act on anthraquinone benzacridone, whereupon the reaction product obtained is treated with a chlorinating agent until a sample has been reprecipitated from sulfuric acid has a content of about 4 atoms of chlorine.
It has now been found that a similar vat dye can be obtained in an analogous manner if the trichloro-anthraquinone benzacridone, which can be obtained by chlorinating anthraquinone benzacridone in organic medium with sulfuryl chloride in the presence of chlorine iodine, is an agent that can replace oxygen with chlorine, z.
B. phosphorus pentahelloride or thionyl chloride, expediently in the presence of an indifferent organic solvent or suspension medium such as trichlorobenzene, and the reaction product obtained is treated with a chlorinating agent until a sample has been reprecipitated from sulfuric acid has a content of about 5 atoms of chlorine.
The Trichloranthraehinonbenzakridon goes here under the action of z. B. Phosphorus pentaehloride initially into relatively easily soluble compounds that have no vat dye character, but depending on the working conditions in the chlorination either go directly into the above marked, generally sparingly soluble dye or into more easily soluble intermediates or mixtures of both If necessary after separation of the sparingly soluble products, by withdrawal of chlorine, z.
B. by chlorine-releasing agents such as phenol, the valuable chlorinated Antbrachinonbenzakridon can be obtained from a particularly pure color.
The dye obtained dissolves orange-red in concentrated sulfuric acid and gives bluish-red dyeings on cotton from a violet vat.
Example: A mixture of 107 parts of trichloroanthraquinone benzacridone, 104 parts of phosphorus pentacloride and 750 parts of trichlorobenzene is gradually heated to 2000 ° C. over a period of 12 hours and stirred at this temperature for about 2 hours . The orange-yellow solution is then allowed to cool to about 175 ° C. and about 220 parts of chlorine are introduced over the course of about 3 hours.
The mixture is allowed to cool while air is passed through, the crystalline reaction product is filtered off with suction, washed with trichlorobenzene and the adhering solvent is removed by steam distillation. The product obtained can be purified by recrystallization from trichlorobenzene.
