Process for the preparation of a mixture of α-naphthoic acid and benzoic acid. British Patent No. 298544 describes a process for the preparation of phenyl-a-napthyl-ketone, which consists in heating an alkaline earth metal salt of the a-xaphilioyl-ortlio-benzoic acid to an elevated temperature,
expediently in the presence of an oxide or a hydroxide of an alkaline earth metal. It has now been found that if this reaction is carried out under milder conditions, in particular only heated for a short time, a mixture of c 1 -naphthoic acid and benzoic acid is obtained instead of phenyl-a-naphthyl ketone.
Gabriel and Coleman, reports, <B> 1900, 33, </B> 448, have the production of a-naplitoe-acid from a <B> - </B> naphthoyl <B> - </B> ortho < B> - </B> benzoic acid by melting with caustic soda described, but they received considerable amounts of naphthalene and indicated that the yield of aN.aphthoic acid was only low.
Compared to that method, the method according to the present invention offers the economic advantage that caustic soda can be replaced by a much cheaper compound, namely calcium hydroxide.
Briefly, the invention consists in a process for the preparation of a mixture of a-naphthoic acid and benzoic acid according to which an alkaline earth metal salt of a-naphthoyl-ortho-benzoic acid is exposed to heat in the presence of an oxygen compound, for example an oxide or a hydroxide an alkaline earth metal is exposed for a short time. The reaction products are already known and should be used as intermediates in the dye industry.
<I> Example: </I> The sodium salt of 2 # -naplithoylbenzoic acid is dissolved in water and calcium chloride is added. The precipitate of the calcium salt that forms is filtered off and dried. 50 parts of this calcium salt are mixed with 13.6 parts 9.2% > igem calium hydroxide mixed and the mixture heated. The mass becomes liquid and uniform.
While stirring, the temperature is increased to <B> 300 </B> to 3'50 '<B> C </B> and maintained for about <B> 15 </B> minutes.
The heating is then interrupted, the mass is allowed to cool down and it is broken up. The acids are isolated, for example, in the following way. The reaction mixture. is boiled with a sodium carbonate solution and the precipitated calcium carbonate is filtered off and washed.
The combined filtrates and washings can be thinned to about 1200 parts ver, heated to the boil and the acids set free by adding hydrochloric acid.
The naphthoic acid precipitates immediately and can be filtered hot and washed with hot water. The product obtained in this way is white in color, without further purification, and melts at 159 to 160 ° C. The filtrate is allowed to cool, the benzoic acid being crystallized out and filtered off.
If you work according to the example above, the reaction proceeds very gently, results in a yield approaching the theoretical yield and products of excellent quality.
If desired, those starting products can be used which are made from the cheap and easily accessible phthalic anhydride.
