Process for degassing light metals. As is well known, light metals cannot generally be cast immediately after manufacture into perfect products because they contain a large number of gas inclusions. To degas these light metals, in particular aluminum and its alloys, the melt is left to stand in the furnace, for example in an electric furnace. The period of time that is necessary for a somewhat satisfactory degassing is approx. 8: 10 hours, depending on the size of the operation.
But this form of degassing does not lead to a gas liberation that corresponds to the practical need, even after the long period of standing. The present invention seeks to remedy this deficiency by keeping the atmosphere above the liquid metal bath in motion without the supply of fresh air and without any significant change in the temperature and pressure of the melt and the atmosphere. In the following, an embodiment of the method is explained with reference to the drawing.
It denotes the furnace, which is provided with a charging door b and a heating coil c. Above the cooker receiving the insert, a circulation channel e is provided in which a fan is switched on. With the mediation of the ventilator, the atmosphere above the bath d is kept in motion through the channel e through in the circuit.
The atmosphere can of course also be moved in other ways, just as the fan can be replaced by a pump, for example.
