Process for the preparation of a 1 ± upen dye. It has been found that a valuable vat dye is obtained if the nitrobenzanthrou, which is obtained by nitrating benzanthrone in boiling acetic acid, is reduced to the aminobenzanthrone, the amino group, the latter then being replaced by an oxy group by diazotization and boiling,
then a methylating agent is allowed to act on the oxybenzanthrone thus obtained, and the methoxybenza.nthrone thus obtained is treated with alkaline agents.
According to the present process, the organic quality dye is a dark, metallic, shiny powder which dissolves in strong sulfuric acid with a red-violet color.
It stains from the hydrosulfite vat cotton in lively chlorine- and acid-fast bluish green tones, example: Nitrobenzanthrone obtainable by nitrating benzanthrone in it is reduced, whereupon 4.9 parts of the aminobenzanthrane thus obtained are dissolved in 49 parts of sulfuric acid <B> 66 '</B> Be dissolved, and to the solution 8 parts of a nitrous sulfuric acid, which in 400 parts 47 parts of saline acid (ENT! Z)
contains, adds. Then 50 parts of water are slowly added while cooling at a temperature below 20 ', then diluted with 200 parts of water and boiled until no:
More nitrogen escapes. The undissolved is then sucked off, washed with water and finally boiled with dilute sodium hydroxide solution as long as significant amounts of the oxy compound formed are still in solution. The latter is now precipitated from the solution by acidification, filtered off with suction, washed well with water and dried.
10 parts of the oxy compound thus obtained are then heated with 15 parts of soda, 15 parts of methyl toluenesulfate and 500 parts of trichlorobenzene for 3 hours to the boiling point of the trichlorobenzene. It is then distilled with steam.
Part of the methoxybenzanthrone prepared in this way is introduced into a melt obtained from 5 parts of potassium hydroxide and 5 parts of ethyl alcohol by heating to 150 with the alcohol removed, and between 150 and 170 held until the dye formation has ended. It is poured into water and the melt is worked up as usual.
