Process for the production of a vat dye. It has been found that a valuable vat dye can be made using the compound of the formula
EMI0001.0004
heated with the addition of a tertiary base with aluminum chloride.
The new dye forms a dark powder that dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a brownish-black color and dyes cotton from a brown vat in brown-gray, real tones.
The present process as a starting compound of the above formula can be prepared from l --Hol technical 4,4'-di-amino-1,1'-dianthrimide and 2 moles of 1.-chloro-anthracliinone or from a 4-halogen -1,1'- dianhtrimid and 4-Aininö-1,1'-dianthrimicl or aueli from a 1-IIalogen.antliraehinon and 4-Aniino-1,1'-4 ',
l. "- trianthrimide by reacting in a high-boiling solvent such as nitrobenzene with the addition of acid-binding: @littelri and catalytic amounts of copper salts or copper powder.
Triethylamine is to be mentioned as an example of a tertiary base suitable for the present process. But cyclic bases, such as. B. quinoline or acridine, and especially pyridine bases, such as pyridine itself and its closest homologues.
The heating of the tetranthrimide with the aluminum chloride and the tertiary base can advantageously be carried out at temperatures between about 120 and 1S0C. When using pyridine-Alirniiniilnichl.orid- mixed temperatures of about 140 C are particularly advantageous. Depending on the choice. the base and the reaction temperature may vary slightly in the properties of the product obtained, for. B. with regard to the hue of the vat dyes produced with it.
The reaction mixture can be worked up in the usual way, e.g. B. by making the reaction mixture alkaline after dilution with water with alkali hydroxide and by adding a suitable reducing agent, such as sodium hydrosulfite, the dye obtained is vat and. then by oxidation, e.g. B. by means of air, separating det.
The dye thus obtained can be used as a pigment or for dyeing and printing a wide variety of materials, in particular cellulose-containing fibers, such as cotton, linen, rayon and rayon made from regenerated cellulose as such or in the form of the leuco ester salts obtainable therefrom in a known manner, be used.
The dyeings and prints have a valuable, brownish gray shade and excellent fastness properties, in particular also good appearance. Example 1: \? 5 parts of aluminum chloride are introduced at 10 to 60 parts into 60 parts of anhydrous pyridine with stirring. The mixture is heated to 100 and then 5 parts of 1,1'-4 ', 1 "-4", 1 "' - tetranthridine are added. The temperature is increased to 139 to 1410 within 45 minutes.
About 25 parts of pyridine are distilled off. The mixture is stirred for one hour at 140 and the reaction mixture is poured into 1000 parts of cold water. 120 parts of 30% sodium hydroxide solution are added to this suspension and the mixture is heated to 50% with stirring. 5 parts of 85% sodium hydrosulphite are then added, the mixture is stirred at 60 for 15 minutes and small amounts of residue are filtered off with suction. The filtrate. is blown out with air, the precipitated dye is suctioned off, washed out and dried.
The 1,1'-4 ', 1 "-4", 1 "' - tetranthrimide used in the first paragraph of this example can be prepared as follows, for example: 4.63 parts 4-Chloi, -7., 1 ' -diantlirimide, 4.44 parts of 4-amino-1,1'-dianthrimide, 150 parts of nitrobenzene, 1.5 parts of sodium carbonate and 0.2 part of copper chloride are heated for 8 to 9 hours with stirring at 200-205. It is allowed to cool to 80 to 90, suction filtered and washed with nitrobenzene, then with alcohol.
The crude product is boiled with 500 parts of 2% hydrochloric acid, suction filtered and washed neutral. A violet colored powder is obtained which dissolves in concentrated selvefic acid with a green color.
EMI0002.0033
For 4-chloro-1,1'-dianthrimide, which is also not known in the literature, the following production method is suitable. 88.8 parts of 4-aniino-1,1'-dianthrimide are dissolved in 900 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid. 28 parts of finely powdered sodium nitrite are added over the course of an hour and the mixture is stirred for 5 hours at an ordinary temperature. The reaction mixture is poured into 2000 parts of Fis, suction filtered and washed with 3000 parts of water.
The moist filter cake is made into a paste with 1000 parts of 10% hydrochloric acid and slowly added to a solution of 30 parts of copper chloride in 500 parts of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The mixture is stirred for 2 hours at ordinary temperature, suction filtered and washed neutral. The 4-chloro-1,1'-dianthrimide forms a. dark red powder that dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a green color.
Example 2: 50 parts of aluminum chloride are introduced into 100 parts of anhydrous triethylamine at 10 to 60 times with stirring. hian heated to 7:00 and then added 1.0 part of tetranthrinide. The temperature is increased to 140 within 40 minutes while the excess triethylamine is distilled off at the same time. The mixture is stirred for one hour at 140 and the reaction mixture is poured into 1000 parts of cold water.
This suspension is with. 100 parts of Mo / niger hydrochloric acid sets, the dye is filtered off with suction, washed neutral and dried. It forms a dark powder which dyes cotton in somewhat reddish gray tones than the dye obtainable according to Example 1, first paragraph.
