Process for the preparation of a vat dye. The thioindigo dyes substituted in the 4- and 6-positions are characterized in part by the clarity of the hue and excellent cooking fastness. A dye that meets the highest requirements for lightfastness was not previously known in this series.
It has now been found that the 4-6-7, 4'-6'-7'-hexamethylthioindigo, in addition to the other favorable coloring properties of other members of this series, has an unusually high lightfastness.
The dye can be obtained by subjecting the 3-5-6-trimethylbenzene-1-thioglycolic acid or its substitution products containing the carboxyl, carboxamide or cyano group in the 2-position to the usual condensation methods and the resulting 3-oxy thionaphthene oxidized to the dye.
It has also been found that the condensation products which are formed by the customary methods with oxythionaphthens also have fastness properties similar to those of the dye obtained by oxidation of this oxythionaphthene when the new oxythionaphthene is used.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the preparation of the 4-6-7, 4'-6'-7'-hexamethylbisthionaphtenindigo, which is characterized in that the 4-6-7-trimethyloxythionaphthene is converted into the dye by oxidation convicted.
Example: 35 parts by weight of 3-5-6-trimethylbenzene-1-thioglycol-2.carboxylic acid nitrile in 1200 parts of water; 20 parts by weight of caustic soda 40 Bo and 5 parts by weight of sodium sulfur brought into solution. After the solution is complete, a further 180 parts by weight of 40 'boil sodium hydroxide solution are added and the mixture is stirred at 80-85 for two hours. The sodium salt of 4-6-7-trimethy-3-amino-l-thionaphten-2-carboxylic acid begins to precipitate as soon as it is heated, and this is almost complete after the addition of 100 parts by weight of table salt.
After suctioning off and washing with saline solution, the moist paste is dissolved in 20 times the amount of water with the addition of a little sodium hydroxide solution and bisulfite, filtered, the filtrate acidified with dilute sulfuric acid and warmed in the water bath until the oxythio- naphthenization has ended. After cooling, the oxythionaphthene is filtered off with suction and washed.
It is made into a paste with a little fuel, 500 parts by volume of 3% sodium hydroxide solution are added, heated to 90-100 o and finely ground sulfur is added until the dye formation has ended.
The 4-6-7, 4'-6'-7'-hexamethylbisthio- naphthene indigo dissolves in sulfuric acid with a green color. It dissolves with a yellow color on vat and produces clear red shades of excellent boiling fastness and exceptionally good light fastness on cotton.
The 3-5-6-trimethylbenzene-1-thioglycol-2-carboxylic acid nitrile can be obtained by exchanging the amino group for cyano in the 1-amino-2-nitro-3-4-6-trimethylbenzene, reducing the nitro group and in the 1-cyano-2-amino-3-4-6-trimethylben- zene obtained in this way, the amino group according to known methods against the S. 0112 # COOH group exchanged.
