Device for cutting lengths of stems, in particular cigarettes. This invention relates to a device for cutting, lengths of stems, in particular cigarettes. This device presents the. peculiarity that at least one -cutting knife is supported by a rotating frame around an axis of rotation and is combined with -the control means arranged to force it to perform, during the rotation of the frame, a translational movement lateral corresponding substantially to the advancement speed of the rod to be cut, at the time of cutting, while the knife is placed across it to cut it.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the device according to the invention for cutting cigarettes from a tobacco rod, as well as variant details.
Fig. 1 is an overall elevation, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with members in a position different from that in FIG. 1; Fig. 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2; Fig. 4 is a detailed view showing, as a variant, means for actuating a circular knife; Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 show other variations.
A main shaft 1 (fig. 1 to 3), actuated by the main control of a cigarette-making machine, is rotatably supported, without being able to move axially, in bearings 2 mounted in a fixed gearbox 3 on the base 4 of said machine.
On the shaft 1 is fixed a helical toothed wheel 5 which meshes with a helical toothed wheel 6 mounted on a transverse shaft 7 rotating in bearings 8 mounted in the aforementioned gearbox. On one end of the shaft 7 is fixed a toothed pinion 9 which meshes with a toothed wheel 10 fixed on a shaft 11 mounted in bearings provided in a gearbox 12, in which there is a helical toothed wheel 13 cooperating with another helical toothed wheel, 14, fixed on a vertical -shaft 15.
On the upper part of the shaft there is mounted a grooved wheel or guide wheel 16, the groove of which 16a serves to receive the rod or rod of tobacco which must be cut into determined lengths. The wheel of @@ ui (iage 16 has radial slots 17, four in number, into which knives enter during cutting. In order to be able to carry out general an U adjustment of the wheel. of bui (lage 16, it is threaded on a sleeve.
flange 18 fixed on the shaft 15 by means of an ankle, the emptying wheel being in turn fixed to the flange of the sleeve 18 by screws 19 passing through arcuate slots 20 as shown in End 2.
the inner end of the main shaft 1 carries a transverse rod 21 and a second transersal rod 22 is mounted on the main shaft. 1 parallel to the rod 21. Pairs of rockers 23 and 24 are articulated at the ends of the rods 21 and 22 respectively, the ends of these rockers being connected at 25 by connecting rods 26 still remaining substantially parallel to the axis of the control shaft 1. The two balances 2.1 are assembled by (the spacers 27 and those 23 by spacers 28.
In the central part of the latter are mounted pivots 29 penetrating into the openings of a forked member 30. This member 30 comprises an inclined body or shaft 31 which can rotate in the shoulders of a chair 32 fixed from adjustable manner on a support 33 mounted on the base of the. machine.
The connecting rods 26 have extensions \> 6a which are provided with knife holders 3.1, to which the cutting knives 35 are subjected by means of clamps 36.
When the main shaft 1 is rotated, the rotational movement is transmitted to the whole set of balances 23, 24, but the latter are also forced to oscillate by the fact that they are connected to the forked member. inclined 30, and as this movement is at the same time transmitted to the knives 35, the latter are driven by a translational movement of an elliptical nature, while occupying a position substantially perpendicular to the rod of tobacco to be cut at the very moment of cutting. The speed of movement of the knives due to their universal movement corresponds, to the cutting point,
approximately to that of the tobacco bush.
The continuous tobacco rod is advanced through a tubular guide 37 tangentially connecting to. the. guide wheel 16.
The eccentricity -of the cutting edge of the cutters with respect to the axis of rotation of the assembly, combined with the increase in diameter of the path of the knives as the pendulums approach a position perpendicular to their primitive position, is sufficient to obtain that. each operation a knife gradually crosses the rod of tobacco so as to cut it. The mechanism necessary until now to advance the knives is here eliminated.
The cutting knives 35 have the shape of a se-ment as shown in Fig, 3, but depending on what is desired, they could also be circular or any other suitable shape.
If desired, the knives can be rotated on themselves in the knife holders; in the case of selo .-- mentary knives, then it will be necessary to adjust the rotational movement (these.
For the case where it is desired to sp use knives rotating on themselves. we will use the variant of. fig. 4.
A friction drive wheel 38 is mounted on the body of the forked limb 30, this wheel 38 being provided with a rubber flange 39 which engages a pulley 40 mounted on the shaft of a circular knife. When the pendulum mechanism is rotating. the movement is transmitted to the circular knives via the.
-. control wheel 38 and pulley 40 so as to make them turn on themselves in their knife holders, a variation in the length of the cut cigarettes can be obtained by modifying the speed of rotation of the knives with respect to the advancement speed of the tobacco cob. It is then also necessary to use a guide wheel of other size, driven at an appropriate speed, and to adjust the movement of the knives so as to make them cooperate with this guide wheel.
Fig. 5 shows a variant of the means for rotating: circular knives around their axes. In this case, a fixed toothed wheel 41 is held in the support 33. Toothed pinions 42 are mounted on journals 43 @ which are carried by a plate 44 which can turn on the body of the central wheel 41. The journals 43 are connected to the axes 45 of the rotating knives by means of universal joint shafts 46. When the entire mechanism is caused to rotate, the planet gears 42 are rotated by the central wheel 41 and cause the knives to turn on them. same.
Fig. 6 schematically shows a variant of the means for obtaining the lateral stroke of the cutting knives. Each knife holder is provided with a roller 47 arranged to roll on a cam 48 fixed to the base -de the machine. A similar arrangement is shown in fig. 7, but in this case a flat plate 49 is used mounted in an inclined position. In this case, the amplitude of the stroke can be modified by changing the inclination of the platform.
Fig. 8 is a diagram of a variant of the mechanism of FIG. 1. The rockers closest to the knives are in this case provided with articulations 50 at some distance from the axis: from the main shaft. This results in the knives oscillating in an arc, when they receive their lateral movement during the rotation of the assembly. Their lateral movement can therefore be reduced by an amount equal to the arc.
If desired, one can use only one knife, or, in another case, double the series of knives shown in fig. 1. When only one knife is used, a counterweight should be provided on the opposite side of the swing mechanism to balance the parts.
The mechanism with a single knife will have to turn with a speed twice as high as the pendulum mechanism shown in fig. 1 for all given conditions, and the effective cutting speed is therefore higher. Another option for obtaining lateral movement of the knives is to connect a point of the rear rockers to a point eccentric with respect to the main shaft by means of a universal joint shaft. In this way, an effect similar to that produced by the chu member of the first example is obtained.
A.instead of the guide wheel. 16, a reciprocating guide plate could also be used.
