In se r. éfër. ant in fig. 1 to 4, the compensating cylinder a. pressurized fluid is integral with a connecting bar interconnecting brake shoe control levers and it comprises a tubular box 1 with two flat side seat parts, with rim, op posed to each other , to one of which is applied a cast iron head 2 with fork 3 to be connected to one of said control levers, while the other seat part serves to receive a cast iron sleeve 4, the parts 2 and 4 being fixed to the tube box 1 by means of bolts.
In the sleeve 4 engages a head, so as to be able to slide therein, this head being provided with a fork for its connection with the other of the aforementioned control levers. Threaded rod 7 is fixed to the head 6 by means of a pin 8. This threaded rod engages an nut 9 located inside the box 1 and carrying a ratchet wheel 11 fixed thereto by means of a key 10.
The, box 1 forms a cylinder containing piston 12 provided with a pawl 13, articulated therein. engaging in the. toothing of the wheel on the ratchet 11. The piston 12 carries a lower extension 14-which extends beyond the pawl 13 and serves as a support for springs with good din 15 and 16.
In order to prevent a rotation of the piston 12, the extension 14est.pourvud'une lug 17 engaging between longitudinal ribs 18 formed inside the box 1.
The chamber 19 located above the piston 12 is connected to a flexible pipe 20 intended to be connected to an opening of the brake cylinder so that, when the stroke of the piston in the brake cylinder exceeds a predetermined limit, said opening will be closed and pressurized fluid can flow from the brake cylinder. in the. chamber 19 above piston 12.
In operation, if the brake shoes are applied and their wear is such that the stroke of the piston of the brake cylinder exceeds the predetermined amplitude, pressurized fluid is supplied from the brake cylinder through pipe u 90 to chamber 19 and the piston 12 is then lowered to engage the pawl. 13 on] a tooth, next to. 1a, ratchet wheel 11. When the brake is released, the escape of fluid from piston chamber 19 allows springs 15 and 16 to move piston 12 with pawl 13 so that it rotates 1a. ratchet wheel 11 of a tooth.
The rotational movement. thus imprinting on the nut 9 produces a displacement of the threaded rod 7 to the left so as to reduce the active length of the connecting bar.
The reduction of. active length of the connecting rod causes the play resulting from the wear of the brake shoes to be taken up and when, at the. following successive adjustments, the threaded rod 7 collides with the key 21 before a. see the complete stroke completed, the wedge may give way slightly to the left (fig. 1) by sliding on a bevel, so as to allow pawl 1.3 and piston 12 to compile their stroke.
A felt packing ring 22 is housed in a circular groove inside the sleeve 4 so as to rest on the head 6 and to prevent the entry of dust. humidity etc.
In the example of fig. 5 to 7, the heads 26, 27 of the link bar of the brake shoe control levers engage by square heads 28 in guide sleeves 30 which are fixed to ah) cylinder box 29 and are connected by a rod 32 with reverse threads, carrying, fixed therein, the ratchet wheel 31 with which the pawl 37 mounted on the control piston 33 cooperates. An extension 34 thereof serves as a support for the two springs a. sausage 35. 36.
In operation, when the brakes are applied, if the piston of the brake cylinder exceeds its normal predetermined stroke, due to wear of the brake shoes, pressurized fluid will flow from the brake cylinder through pipe 38 to the brake cylinder. above piston 33 which descends and brings pawl 37 into engagement with the next tooth of ratchet wheel 31.
When the brake is released, the fluid escaping above the piston 33 allows the springs 35 and 36 to push back the piston 33 and thereby rotate the ratchet wheel 31 so as to bring the heads 26, 27 l together. 'from each other and to cause the reduction of the active length of the connecting rod with a view to compensating for the wear clearance at the brake shoes.
For the adjustment of the device after replacement of the brake pads, a bevel gear 39 is provided on the hub of the ratchet wheel 31 and engages with a pinion: 39a fixed on an axis 40 provided with a square part 4: 1 for an operating key.
On the extension 34 of the piston 33 is articulated a small angled lever 42, one of which engages under the beak of the pawl 37 and the other branch of which passes through a notch provided on a rotary journal 43 (fig. 7) which can be rotated using a handle 44.
When it is desired to remove the top or cover of the cylinder box 29, the engagement of the elbow lever 42 with the journal 43 prevents the springs 35,36 from driving the piston 33 too far.
When the device is adjusted after changing the brake shoes, the pawl 37 can be released from the ratchet wheel 31 by acting on the handle 44 so as to rotate the journal 43. The projecting part of the latter comes from then act on the adjacent branch of the angled lever 42 and the other branch of the latter puts the pawl 37 out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 31, which can then be rotated in one direction or the other by the operation of the 'axis 40.
In the example of fig. 8 and 9, the connecting bar which is integral with the box 46 forming the pressurized fluid compensating cylinder comprises the heads 45, 47 with a part 48 slidably mounted in the head 47, as well as a threaded rod 49 screwed into the part 48 and the middle part of which carries, fixed therein, the. adjustment ratchet wheel 50, while its opposite end, housed in the head 45, is provided with a nut 51 and a locknut 52, the nut 51 bearing by a washer on an inner shoulder of the head 45.
The ratchet wheel and its cooperating parts are of the same construction as in fig. 2.
This construction prevents the transmission of tension forces from the connecting bar on the body of the box 46. In fact, when this bar is stressed by connecting forces, these forces are transmitted by the nut 51 on the robust base. of the head 45.
In the example of fig. 10 and 11, the connecting bar which is integral with the box 54 forming a pressurized fluid compensating cylinder comprises the heads 53,55 with the sliding part 56 and the threaded rod 59 screwed into the part 56 and carrying at its other end the ratchet wheel 58 wedged by a key 60. The heads 53, 55 are fixed to the box 54 by bolts 57. The arrival of pressurized fluid to the compensating piston in the upper part of the box 54 takes place through the pipe 61. The ratchet wheel 58 is operated as before.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that due to the fact that the pressurized fluid compensating cylinder is entirely supported by the connecting rod of the device, the operation of the latter will not be affected in any way by the movements of the vehicle body on its sides. suspension springs or by the relative movements of the link bar due to the application of the brakes.
