Abstract

La présente invention concerne un appareil et un procédé de transfert de signaux vidéo numériques en ligne. La location de signaux vidéo numériques s'effectue dans un environnement en ligne comprenant un ou plusieurs ordinateurs clients et au moins un serveur de réseau connecté par une liaison de communication aux ordinateurs clients. Le procédé consiste à faciliter l'accès à un catalogue en ligne stocké dans la mémoire d'un serveur vidéo du réseau. Le catalogue comprend des informations concernant les signaux vidéo numériques pouvant être loués à partir du serveur du réseau. Des demandes sont alors reçues des ordinateurs clients pour la location de signaux vidéo numériques sélectionnés dans le catalogue en ligne pour une durée spécifique. Les demandes incluent le paiement électronique qui est fonction du signal vidéo numérique sélectionné et de la durée spécifique. Lorsque le paiement électronique a été effectué, le signal vidéo numérique est transmis à l'ordinateur client via une liaison de communication. Une fois transmis, le signal vidéo numérique peut être visualisé par l'utilisateur de l'ordinateur client pendant la durée spécifiée. Les avantages de l'invention incluent la possibilité de louer des films sans avoir à fournir de sommes supplémentaires pour l'achat des films. La présente invention concerne également une interface simulant la véritable location de films dans un magasin de location vidéo. L'utilisateur peut, en outre, visualiser le film autant de fois qu'il le désire pendant la durée spécifique de location, simulant ainsi la véritable location de cassettes vidéo ou de DVDs de longs-métrages.
