Um formador de imagem multiespectral e as aplicações do mesmo para a marcação e codificação de, por exemplo, tecidos, linhos, artigos de vestuário, documentos e pacotes para máquina de alta velocidade de identificação e classificação. Usos específicos incluem artigo de vestuário e operações de aluguel de têxteis, operações de lavanderia, e a classificação de documentos e pacotes postais e de correio. São providos métodos e aparelhos para identificar artigos pela informação codificada dentro de uma marca aplicada, bem como um esquema moderno de leitura/decodificação de marca. é divulgado um método para imprimir marcas fluorescentes em um artigo, tal como uma etiqueta selada por calor, para gerar um único número de identificação ou índices, como também um sistema leitor para ler marcas aplicadas. O sistema leitor inclui uma fonte de iluminação que excita as marcas fluorescentes em combinação com um dispositivo sensível à cor, como uma máquina fotográfica que é "cega" ao comprimento de onda da iluminação mas que pode discernir a cor de fluorescência e uma ordem espacial relativa das marcas fluorescentes, em que a informação é codificada.
