Um dispositivo testador manual (101, 102) é fornecido para medir, ao vivo, propriedades de compressão de um material, preferivelmente cartilagem articular. O dispositivo é controlado por meio de computador e fornece um indicador de leitura da propriedade de compressão desejada, a qual, no caso de tecido corporal, pode ser indicadora do estado de saúde do tecido. O dispositivo não requer alinhamento perpendicular preciso e é, preferivelmente, capaz de compensar esforço aplicado pelo usuário contra o tecido.
