Abstract
1399947 Hardness testers E KROESKE 1 March 1974 [1 March 1973] 9998/73 Heading G1S A paraboloid diamond 19, Fig. 1, is carried by an indentor 18 having upper and lower collars 22 connected by C-shaped springs 21 to a housing formed by upper and lower plates 10, 11 and a shield 13. The springs 21 bias the indentor in an upward direction, and tension springs 23 fastened to the lower collar 22 and passing through the upper collar 22 may be adjusted by means of nuts 24 and screws 25 to calibrate the indentor. Four unbonded strain gauge wires 26A, 26B are attached in pairs to the upper and lower collars and top and: bottom plates respectively so that one pair of wires will experience an increase and the other pair of wires a decrease in length on downward movement of the indentor, these four wires being connected in a bridge circuit (not shown) and via an amplifier to a digital voltmeter recording the depth of the indentation. The hardness is recorded on an arbitrary scale. A table 27, Fig. 1, may be raised to preload the test piece 28 and weights may be lowered on to the plate 20 at the top of the indentor.
