Abstract

1,087,226. Measuring tension electrically. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan.21, 1965 [Nov.5, 1963], No. 43566/63. Headings G1N and G1W. A tensiometer comprises a material engaging member 15 arranged to extend tranversely across the material, resilient means supporting the member and allowing movement of the member in a plane perpendicular to the surface of the material and means associated with the member 15 responsive to movement of the member 15 to indicate and or control tension in the material. As shown in Fig. 1, the guide bar 15 is suspended from a support bar 16 by a spring 17 and movement of the material dependent on the tension, is indicated on a dial gauge 19. In an alternative embodiment (see Fig.4 not shown) the material is engaged by a bar 35 supported on rubber bushtype springs 36 through link 37 and shaft 38. In the first embodiment, the dial gauge may be replaced by an electrical transducer, the output signal of which is either used to actuate a stop motion or control the motor speed. In the second embodiment, electrical strain gauges, incorporated in a Wheatstone bridge circuit, are provided on the torsion bar.
