O processo para preparação de aço e aglutinantes hidraulicamente ativos emprega escórias ricas em óxido de ferro, como, por exemplo, escória de aço, como agente de oxidação para carbono em ferro gusa. A escória é reduzida e origina-se um tipo de escória de alto forno com propriedades hidráulicas aperfeiçoadas.
