sistemas de informação codificada. um código é aplicado a uma parte do item de varejo ou sua embalagem/rótulo. o código é aplicado em um padrão de repetição. o código é apresentado em um formato legível por máquina de leitura ótica. os marcadores de código são arranjados em posições predefinidas dentro de uma matriz. um dispositivo de orientação legível por máquina de leitura ótica indica a orientação correta da matriz, de modo que a posição dos marcadores de código dentro da matriz corretamente orientada corresponde a uma sequência predefinida de números inteiros de código. o código corresponde a um número de código de barras, existente para o item de varejo. o código é apresentado de uma maneira suficientemente discreta para ser parte do desenho impresso de um rótulo ou embalagem para o item de varejo,sem mudar a aparência global do desenho impresso.
