A carboximetil celulose insolúvel em água tem um grau de substituição para eterificação (DE) situando-se entre 0,3 e 0,6. Na carboximetil celulose insolúvel em água, o hidrogênio do grupo carboxila de pelo menos 95% dos grupos carboximetila é substituído por um metal.
