Abstract

The multi-directional expansion joint for civil engineering projects e.g. roads, runways, etc., comprises rows of load bearing elements which are aligned, and spaced apart. A section rests on the load elements, and forms a support for a removable separating strip, used during the casting of the blocks constituting the road surface etc. The separating strip also acts as a guide for a vibrating beam which is used to tamp the concrete down. - When the blocks have dried, the strips are removed leaving grooves between adjacent blocks which are subsequently filled with elastics material. The profile is pref. an inverted T-shape in cross-section.(0/9)

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY filed in support of a request
BELGIAN PATENT formulated by
Willem Hendrik MOOT for "Multidirectional shrinkage or expansion joint" as PATENT OF INVENTION.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

  "Multi-directional withdrawal or expansion joint" The invention relates to a withdrawal or expansion joint which can be produced in a simple and effective manner and which can be used for any civil engineering work, such as roads, runways. aviation, traffic, parking or storage areas, cold stores, floating areas or screeds, sluices, tunnels, buildings and the like.

  The main object of the invention is the formation of a joint allowing the withdrawal, respectively the expansion, in all directions while avoiding any sawing of the crack initiators of the joints.

  The joint according to the invention allowing such a result consists essentially of a row of load transfer elements, known per se, arranged at distances A; a profile resting on the elements and forming a support, during the construction of the slabs, for a separating slat respectively a guiding slat for vibrating beam, the groove obtained between the slabs, after removal of said slat, being filled with a plastic material.

  In order to better highlight the characteristics of the present invention, a preferred embodiment is described below, by way of example, without limitation, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 Figures 1 to 5. show, in perspective view, several phases of the method of constructing a joint according to the invention; Figure 6 shows a section along line VI-VI of Figure 3; FIG. 7 represents a section along line VII-VII of FIG. 5.

  In Figure 1 are shown at the location of two expansion joints to be formed, two rows of load transfer elements 1 as described in beige patent No. 837. 385.

  These elements l, constituted by thin plates 2 provided with frames 3, are arranged in such a way that, on the one hand, the frames 3 with which they are provided are located alternately on the left side and on the right side of an imaginary line and that, on the other hand, is respected, according to the invention, between each pair of aligned elements 1, a distance A.

  Each row of elements 1 thus aligned is then surmounted by a profile 4, preferably made of plastic, in the shape of two "L" whose adjacent arms 5-6 are joined to each other at their free ends so as to form a hinge 7.

  The profile 4 rests on the plates 2 of the elements with the arms 8-9.

  As shown in FIG. 3, each profile 4 can be provided with a separating element 10 held in place by the fact that the lower end is provided with a recess 11.

  The assembly of the section 4 and the separation slat 10 represents a height corresponding to the thickness of the slab 12 to be produced.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

  It is thus obtained that the slats 10 can serve as guide elements for vibrating beams as shown schematically. at 13 in Figure 4.

  11 suffices, after the concrete has hardened, to remove the slats 10 and to fill the grooves 14 thus obtained with one. suitable plastic 15.

  In this way, a multi-directional withdrawal or expansion joint is obtained. Indeed, while making a tight seal, e. at. by the presence of the profile 4, one obtains, by the arrangement, at distance A, of the elements 1 surmounted by the profile 4, which can open in one direction, perpendicular to the length of the profile, a free movement of the adjacent slabs 12.

  As illustrated in FIGS. 8 and 9, a joint according to the invention can be used for constructions with parallel slabs as well as for constructions whose slabs lie in two perpendicular directions.

  The invention is in no way limited to the execution described above and shown in the accompanying drawings. All variations can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
