<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
On ajoute
<EMI ID=4.1>

"Support for intaglio printing and its preparation process".
The present invention relates to a support for intaglio printing and to its preparation process.
Intaglio printing on paper has already been known for a long time. Paper supports, however, have many drawbacks, such as the yellowing of the paper during exposure to sunlight, the need to protect these supports with a window with the drawbacks of reflections, their clogging by the resin during the application of protective varnish which appreciably modifies the appearance and does not allow renewal, and finally the limitation of the paper to the usual production formats.
It is also known to prepare a paper support by coating it with layers containing totin glue and white gelatin and to apply over a piece of silk,
which allows printing on silk. However,
the drawbacks of the yellowing of the paper and its excessive absorption capacity still cannot be avoided in this case.
Finally, in the XVII Century, the painter Hercule Seghers tried to unite etching, color and canvas, but he could not achieve a multiple print without having to make important touch-ups, painted by hand, lack of printing capability.
The aim of the present invention is therefore to solve the problem of intaglio printing directly on canvas, with a view to obtaining a multiple print run of an intaglio engraved work which does not have the aforementioned drawbacks. It is necessary
<EMI ID = 1.1>
artists are as little disturbed as possible by the solution provided to this problem, in particular it is necessary that, starting from the engraving, it is equally possible to make prints on paper or on the support developed according to the invention.
These problems have been solved, according to the invention, by a support for intaglio printing comprising a canvas base having sufficient mechanical strength for the tension on the frame and the grain of which ensures good dispersion of light, at least one coating layer of the sized fabric, the coating layer having intaglio ability and dimensional stability for repeated pulling, as well as a skin effect coating layer based on a fine fiber fabric resistant which in the wet state exhibit an appropriate capillary action with respect to the printing ink, this coating layer adhering
to the last coating layer via an adhesion layer and being impregnated with a finishing material which predeterminedly limits the capillary power of the fibers of the coating layer and gives the support the degree of hygroscopy required for an intaglio printing, the skin effect of this coating layer being such that it prevents the penetration of any subsequent varnish into the coating layer.
The present invention also relates to a process for preparing such a support, this process comprising the tension on the frame of a canvas having sufficient mechanical strength for this operation and the grain of which ensures good dispersion of the light, the spreading over this canvas of at least one layer of coating having an intaglio capacity and dimensional stability for a printing with several passes, the spreading on the canvas coated with an adhesion layer on which is applied a layer of skin-effect coating based on a fabric of fine resistant fibers, which in the wet state exhibit capillary action with respect to the printing ink,
impregnating the fibers of the coating layer by spreading over them with a finishing material capable of limiting the capillary power of the coating layer and of providing the degree of hygroscopy required for intaglio printing, and drying the product obtained.
By the expression capacity of intaglio, we mean the power to take an impression, when moistening
the support, which at this time must become flexible, while retaining certain principles of dimensional stability necessary for multiple pass printing. When the water recedes, the support should regain its initial strength.
During the passage under the press, the support must be able to absorb the oil-based ink, while it is wet, the skin-effect coating layer must be able to fulfill this function by capillarity. To this end, use is advantageously made of natural fibers, preferably silk, having sufficient fineness and rapidity under ordinary drawing conditions. Silk offers the advantage of great resistance and a great power of reverberation of light which gives the colors which are superimposed on it more luminosity.
It is however advantageous to treat the silk mechanically, for example by sanding, and / or chemically, for example with alcohol, gelatin, etc ... so as to obtain a support having a real capacity for printing. original prints, effectively protected by restorable varnishes. The treatment of silk has the effect of eliminating the silk aspect of it in favor of the fundamental qualities of silk capillarity.
The invention will be described in more detail with the aid of the exemplary embodiment given below, without limitation.
A piece of pure linen fabric is cut out, having a crossing of the order of 18 threads per cm, with warp and weft if possible equal. This canvas, of virgin linen must be ready for the application of plaster.
It is spread out dry on a frame or panel, it is stapled all around, staple against staple, we wet it using a
<EMI ID = 2.1> sand it lightly to level the crossings without wearing out the screen, then it is left to dry stretched.
A basic mixture is then produced containing approximately
350 g of totine glue (gelatin from rabbit skins) and 150 g of white gelatin, as usually used for art molding. The purpose of this mixture is to ensure a hygroscopic balance and to soften the support to humidity for printing.
Soak 150 g of base mixture in 500 g
<EMI ID = 3.1>
married, without bringing to a boil. A layer of this material is spread to glue the canvas so that the subsequent coating cannot pass through the latter. The covering power of this amount of material should be approximately 2 m <2>.
100 g of the base mixture are then soaked in
100 g of water with heating as indicated above and a second sizing layer is spread, crosswise with respect to the first layer.
75 g of the base mixture, 100 g of chalk and 60 g of titanium white are then soaked in 600 g of water with heating in a water bath. A first layer of coating is spread and scraped flat on the surface to make it penetrate into the grain, for example using a knife with a wide and flat blade. We add
500 g of hot water in the plaster still heated in a bain-marie. We spread a second thin layer of plaster, we scrape, then using the hand we largely palm the surface. After drying, it is possible to scrape again with a knife to obtain a sanding effect.
85 g of the base mixture, 100 g of chalk and 60 g of titanium white are then soaked in 1000 g of water, and the whole is heated in a water bath as described above. This third layer of coating, the sizing properties of which are already greater than the two preceding ones, is spread. This third layer can be applied in two successive phases with a one hour delay between the two, and adding 300 g of cold water
to the mixture during the time delay.
55 g of the base mixture and 15 g of titanium white are soaked in 600 g of water while heating in a bath, this material being used for the adhesion of the silk to the coating layers.
The silk has been previously cut at an angle to the linen fabric, with par. example a gradient of 7.5 cm per meter, because the straight grain prevents embossing. We washed her in
an aqueous solution containing 10% alcohol at 90 [deg.], heated to a temperature of 90 [deg.] C. The silk is stretched wet on a panel, on which it stretches and retracts during drying. Once dry, it is sliced and placed on the support coated with the adhesion layer.
Finally, a preparation containing 43 g of total glue, 20 g of white gelatin, 20 g of titanium white and 670 g of water is spread on the silk. It is immediately beaten, with for example cellulose wadding, to remove as much gelatin as possible from the surface intended to receive the printing and to embed the silk in the preparation.
The quantity of gelatin which remains taken in the silk fibers is then such that it limits the fusion of the ink in the silk, that it allows "the love necessary for the printing", that it prevents the sticking of the ink. test and finally gives the degree of hygroscopy required for an intaglio print printing.
After drying it is advisable to rub the surface again with a cloth soaked in water and alcohol at 90 [deg.] To tan and remove the sticky.
All operations are preferably carried out at a temperature between 20 [deg.] And 23 [deg.] C.
After 48 hours of deep drying, the silk surface is re-humidified and a delicate sanding is undertaken using sandpaper of an appropriate grain. It is necessary to create a velvet without moving the fiber and to wear the crests of the weft and warp threads up to a third of their thickness, in order to have a vellum whose silky area or surface is as dense as possible, without completely smoothing the weft or warp.
According to this exemplary embodiment, a support is obtained having a sufficiently covering white, and of which the head of the grain of the linen fabric appears discreetly with a slight local translucency. It should be noted that no disinfectant
have been added to the gelatins and no gelatin has been in the water for more than the time required for preparation.
After the printing operation, it is possible to apply a protective varnish, for example a varnish based on acrylic resin, which does not yellow with aging. Thanks to
the coating layer having a skin effect, this varnish does not penetrate into the coating layer and it may be subject to renewal, in particular by a restorer.
An exemplary embodiment of a support according to the invention is illustrated in more detail with the aid of the single attached figure.
In this figure, reference 1 designates the fibers
of the linen fabric, reference 2 the material of the sizing layers of the fibers which by capillary action have partially passed from the back side of the linen fabric, reference 3 all the coating layers, reference 4 the layer membership, the reference
5 the silk fibers whose ridges have been sanded and the ruffled threads of which have been driven into the coating layer by dabbing and reference 6 the finishing material which permeates the silk fibers.
It should be understood that the present invention is not
in no way limited to the embodiment described above and that many modifications can be made to it
without departing from the scope of this patent.
For example, depending on the desired effect, consider increasing or reducing the thickness of the coating layers, applying several layers of silk and varying the proportion of glues to have more fade or more sharpness .
It should also be understood that, although in the exemplary embodiment practically only materials of natural origin are used, it is possible to envisage the use of synthetic materials, for example for the sizing or coating layers. and
<EMI ID = 4.1>
of the coating layer, insofar as these plastics provide a similar effect.
