<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
This process is long and imprecise, since the flatness of the fabric-support assembly is not perfect, and the texture of the fabric itself is sometimes damaged by the glue.
A first object of the invention consists in carrying out a process for printing fabric with a support removably retaining the fabric, which can however be separated from this support and used without any washing, drying or operation. other.
A second object of the invention is not only to facilitate the actual printing, but also to constitute an adhesive backing on which the fabric, once printed, can be presented 4 all fine attractants, advertising, decorative and others. .
The process according to the invention for printing a fabric essentially consists in applying a thermo-adhesive product (hereinafter referred to simply as "oolle") on a support using a common printing varnish machine, to be applied. the fabric on the support thus coated and dry, in passing the assembly through a heating oalander at a temperature, at a speed and under a pressure which allow the glue to adhere slightly to the fabric without thereby polymerizing and harden, allow this assembly to cool, square it off with a guillotine, pass it under a conventional printing press, and take off by simple traction the fabric once the printing has been carried out. The support coated with -it glue can be used several times and for several kinds of fabrics.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
If it is desired to perform continuous printing, reel wound media are used, and a continuous printing machine of a suitable type is employed.
Oalandrage iron the fabric, which adheres perfectly evenly to its support. This adhesion is sufficient to prevent any movement of the fabric relative to its support, without however modifying its structure or impregnating its fibers.
After printing, not only does the pattern appear on the fabric in one or more colors, but also, if the fabric is not detached from its support, there is a display that protects and maintains the fabric. It is thus possible to print a fabric and produce, by leaving it on its support, a "panoply" ready for use, for example with a view to making an object such as a garment, a lampshade, etc. .., by assembling elements or "patterns" glued individually or in groups on one or more supports, because the user can easily separate the fabric from the support, cut it according to the outline, and then proceed to the desired assembly, for example following indications printed on the back of the support. Such "outfits" are easier to mail than "loose" fabric, especially if the fabric is not wrinkle-resistant.
This therefore presents a great advantage of a practical nature.
You can even make postcards or other items that you can immediately transform into pouches or scarves.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Finally, artistic engravings can be made on fabrics fixed to a support as indicated above, in all cases where until now, in order to be able to print and pass these articles on machines with automatic sheet feeder, we was obliged to use glues.
The sequence of operations will now be described in more detail.
The chosen support should not be too porous, so that the glue remains on the surface and does not penetrate too deeply into the thickness of the support. We will preferably use a varnishable cardboard (or at a pinch a fairly strong paper), or a synthetic material, plastic or other.
The glue should be chosen from those which start to soften, and therefore become adhesive, at a temperature appreciably lower than that at which a polymerization takes place which permanently hardens the glue and consequently prevents separation of the fabric and of its support, at least without washing that dissolves the glue. Indeed, if these two temperatures were very similar, a possible accidental overheating or a bad adjustment of the calender would eliminate all the advantages of the process according to the invention, since it would be necessary to have recourse to the conventional means to separate the fabric from the fabric. its support. A satisfactory product is manufactured and sold under the reference "464-3" by the WIKOLIN Company of Bremen (Federal Republic of Germany).
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The glue is applied to the support in any suitable manner, for example by means of a common printing varnish machine, comprising a digging tunnel, preferably with infrared rays.
The fabric is applied to the support thus coated and dry, by any appropriate means, and the whole is passed through a heating or ice-cold calender. The fabric and its support are introduced into the calender previously brought to a temperature generally between 80 and 1800 and which depends essentially on the temperature at which the adhesive begins to adhere. But it is also necessary to take into account the nature and the thickness of the fabric, which the heat must pass through to reach the adhesive layer.
The speed of advance of the fabric-support assembly inside the calender, as well as the pressure of the rollers, is determined by trial and error, as a function of the factors previously mentioned: it is obvious that the longer the fabric is. .Thick or poor conductor, the more it is necessary to reduce the speed of advance and the more one can increase the pressure of the rollers and the temperature of the heating cylinder. Conversely, with a light fabric and a strongly heated grille, the passage speed will be very high. By way of example, with the aforementioned colla "464-3" and a light fabric, it will be heated to 100 with a linear speed of 15 m per minute and under a pressure of 1 kg / cm2.
For painting canvas, for example from the Maison ROUGIER & PLE, the temperature will be 180, the linear speed of 5 m per minute and the pressure of 3 kg / cm2.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Of course, the thickness of the film of adhesive and the nature of the support also play a role depending on the greater or lesser porosity of the support, the thickness of the external layer of adhesive is greater or less. You have to starch in practice to use paper or cardboard that is very spongy.
Any fabric can be used, for example silk, nylon, poplin, calico, bemberg, canvas, etc ..., provided, of course, that you choose the enare for the printing. suitable for each particular case. Any printing process can also be used, and in particular letterpress, intaglio, offset or gravure printing.
Polychrome printing "in the format" does not offer any difficulty: the registration of the various colors is ensured by conventional means.
Continuous printing does not present any more difficulty the fabric being itself wound in a reel, it is sufficient to use a support also wound in reel, and for printing in several colors, to call upon a machine. continuous printing - for example by gravure, offset or letterpress - provided with an appropriate registration system.
Such machines are well known to technicians. You can adapt as many printing units as you want.
Since the backing can be very thin - for example the thickness of a playing card - while still having sufficient rigidity to allow good
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
printing of the fabric, and that the cylinders of the printing machines are adjustable, it is as easy to pass under such a machine a support-fabric assembly according to the invention as an ordinary sheet of cardboard or plastic material that is want to print.
Once the printing is finished, you can easily peel the fabric from its support. If the latter is used only for printing and not as a display, it can be used several times because it retains a layer of glue which, not having been polymerized, can soften again on heating. This possibility of repurposing the adhesive is very advantageous in practice, since it reduces the cost price of the process. In addition, as long as the support has not been materially damaged - for example torn in the case of an oarton - it can, if necessary, be re-coated with a new layer of glue.
As the thermo-adhesive product adheres only weakly to the fabric, there is little risk of the fabric being damaged. In addition, it is, in practice, possible to use the same glue for different fabrics.
It should of course be understood that the details of the implementation of the process described above have been described only by way of example and may undergo numerous modifications without departing from the invention, in particular as regards relates to the type of machine to be used for continuous printing.
