<EMI ID=7.1>

Synthetic resin panel and its manufacturing process.
A subject of the present invention is a synthetic resin panel which is particularly suitable as a traffic sign, as well as the method for manufacturing this panel.
Unlit traffic signs used at
to date are generally made either of metal or of synthetic material. However, synthetic resin panels tend to replace metal panels and this mainly because of the qualities of resistance to atmospheric agents - <EMI ID = 1.1>
metal.
Such synthetic resin panels have hitherto been produced in the form of flat plates comprising on their rear face reinforcements in the form of ribs integrally formed with the plate, with a view to ensuring its stiffening.
This embodiment is however not entirely satisfactory. The presence of the extra thicknesses formed by the reinforcing or stiffening ribs gives rise to significant stresses in the material, during the production of the panel. These stresses lead to local deformations of the front face of the panel which therefore no longer has the desired flatness.
Significant warping of the panel is also observed after prolonged exposure of the latter to atmospheric conditions. The warping observed can reach values of the order of 2 centimeters per meter.
- To remedy these drawbacks and others of the known technique, it would therefore be appropriate to a on the one hand to reinforce the flatness of the front face of the panel by eliminating any excess thickness in the panel causing stresses in the manufacture in the material and on the other hand to increase the rigidity of the panel. This can be done using panels of the so-called "sandwich" type.
However, sandwich panels currently exist are not suitable for use as traffic signs. In fact, in a sandwich panel, only the two large faces are covered with external layers ensuring solidity, while the edges or <EMI ID = 2.1>
rior if it was exposed to the open air, tent under the effect of atmospheric conditions only by the action of animals, or even of mixed people.
In order to make the sandwich panel usable, it would therefore be necessary to protect the edges of the panel. However, since the external pprois
of the panel are generally made of a thermosetting resin in order to provide the panel with sufficient strength, the provision of protection by welding is excluded. Moreover, there is no commercially usable glue which would allow a protective wall to be attached to the edges of the panel so as to ensure absolutely tight connection between the external faces of the panel and the face attached to the edges.
The present invention provides a solution to this problem by providing a panel of which the outer surfaces and the edge protection surface are produced.
in a single continuous wall around the core.
The synthetic resin panel according to the invention is characterized mainly in that it comprises an inner core surrounded on all sides by a continuous wall of strong synthetic material to form a sandwich panel with closed edges.
The invention will be better understood by referring to the description together with the accompanying drawings which show by way of examples various embodiments of the invention and in which:
- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a panel according to one embodiment of the invention; <EMI ID = 3.1> embodiment of the invention, and
- Figure 3 shows an embodiment of a panel of the known technique, also in section.
Referring to the drawings, and first of all to Figure 3, it can be seen that the panel of the known technique consists of a plate 1, the rear face 2 of which is provided with reinforcing ribs 3 coming from one piece. with the plate
1. During the production of the panel, the presence of the extra thicknesses formed by the ribs 3 generates internal stresses in the material which cause the appearance of shrinkages on the front face 4. This lack of flatness of the front face of the panel results in, when the panel is provided with a reflective coating, the appearance of shadow zones which make it difficult to read.
Furthermore, the production of the ribs 3 requires
a not insignificant contribution of material which puts a strain on the cost price of the panel. Finally, as said previously, these stiffening ribs are not sufficient to prevent

can reach significant values.
The invention overcomes these drawbacks by providing a panel consisting of a central core 5 surrounded by a continuous wall 6 of a resistant synthetic material. This p king extends uninterruptedly both on the rear face 7, on the front face 8 and on the edges 9 of the panel.
According to the embodiment of FIG. 1, the front face 8 of the panel is extended by supports 10, which can be produced continuously or discontinuously, and <EMI ID = 5.1> <EMI ID = 6.1>
neau on a support.
According to the embodiment of Figure 2, the panel also comprises an internal core 5 surrounded on all sides by a wall 6. During the manufacture of the panel it is planned to insert, prior to the hardening of
<EMI ID = 7.1>
before receiving the panel fixing elements on a support.
It will be noted, according to the embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2, that the panel according to the invention is constituted in the general form of a box surrounding the central core 5, and thus has great resistance to bending and great rigidity. .
Moreover, also according to these embodiments, any excess thickness in the panel has been eliminated, causing internal stresses with deformation of the visible faces of the panel.
The process for producing the panels of the invention consists in surrounding a solid core of suitable shape with a continuous layer of soft resin and in causing this resin to harden.
According to a preferred embodiment of the panel according to the invention, the core Ast made of a closed cell polyurethane foam and the synthetic material wall arranged around the core is made of a polyester resin. Optionally, to increase the strength of this polyester resin wall, a filler consisting for example of glass fibers can be added thereto.
<EMI ID = 8.1>
read by all known molding techniques.
Thus, for example, for small series, as is the case in the manufacture of panels
signaling, we will use the technique of molding by hand. To do this, a layer of soft resin is manually placed around the solid core and possibly, in case
of necessity, several successive layers, each layer being hardened before the application of the next.
For the production of medium series, the technique of low pressure molding will preferably be used.
The process for producing the panel according to the invention by the technique of low pressure molding consists
in introducing into the bottom of the mold a certain quantity of soft resin on which is deposited, by means of supports optionally constituted by the layer of fibers
glass that it is desired to incorporate into the polyester resin wall, a core of closed-cell polyurethane foam of suitable shape and to deposit on the upper face of this core a new quantity of soft polyester resin with the possible addition of a fiber layer
of glass. The quantities of polyester resin introduced
in the mold are sufficient so that, when the mold is closed, this resin is distributed in a continuous layer over the entire periphery of the core. The polyester resin is then hardened until a hard wall is obtained to obtain the finished panel. Optionally, provision is made to insert into the core inserts exceeding the latter by an amount such that they are flush with the outer walls of the panel once the latter has been completed. These parts are intended to receive- <EMI ID = 9.1>
For the production of large series of panels, the high pressure molding technique will be used.
It should be noted that, in the panel according to the invention, the core of closed-cell polyurethane foam simply constitutes a filling material,
whose contribution to the mechanical strength of the finished panel is low. The essential role of this core is to allow, at the time of molding, the constitution of a continuous wall over its entire periphery, so as to obtain, for the resistant material constituting this continuous wall, a general box shape, once the panel completed.
It was chosen, in the above embodiments, to use a core of closed cell polyurethane foam, only because it is a relatively inexpensive material and impermeable to the polyester resin which, in turn, is. relatively expensive. In this way, all of the polyester resin is used for making the walls.
It should also be noted that the panels described and shown in Figures 1 and 2 allow
to achieve a significant saving in material compared to the conventional panels shown in Figure 3, because they do not have ribs.
A panel is thus obtained which, while making it possible to save material, has a considerably increased rigidity compared to conventional panels, while being protected, due to its absolute tightness, from any risk of deterioration in <EMI conditions. ID = 10.1>
The invention has been described and illustrated simply by way of non-limiting example and it goes without saying that numerous modifications can be made to its implementation without departing from its spirit.
