<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>

- une tête de dépose (3) des spires et un puits (4) contenant la solution de traitement thermique;

Method and installation for the treatment of wire rod
mild steel.
The present invention relates to a method
and an installation for the production, and more particularly the menu for the treatment of the wire rod, applicable to special-
<EMI ID = 1.1>
from a steel with a carbon content of less than
0.4%.
We know that the quality of the wire rod results
of the set of various conditions that the wire presents, among which one will quote by way of example, the dimensions and
<EMI ID = 2.1> used and in particular the absence of any inclusions, the mechanical properties of the wire, in particular its tréf ability, due to the microstructure of the steel, the transverse and longitudinal homogeneity of this microstructure and finally the 'surface appearance
of the wire and in particular the possible oxidation state of the product.
Among these conditions, which govern the final quality of a wire rod, the nature of the scale, the microstructure of the wire and the homogeneity of this microstructure depend, for a given composition, almost exclusively on the treatment undergone by the wire in the last rolling mill stands and the cooling rate of the wire at the outlet of the rolling mill; the control of this cooling rate is precisely the. problem to which the method of the invention provides an interesting improvement.
It is known that the wire rod, intended for drawing, generally undergoes three treatments, namely pickling, intended to remove the oxide layer covering the wire, for example after rolling, patenting, intended to give the wire rod a clean structure. wire drawing and finally coating (lime, borax or phosphate) which is a surface preparation improving the adhesion of the lubricant used for wire drawing.
These operations generally carried out in wire drawing are expensive especially when they relate to low tonnages of wires, which explains the advantage of carrying out these operations at the outlet of the rolling mill itself. This interest is particularly great with regard to patenting, especially when it comes to wire rod having a diameter equal to the minimum achievable in the rolling mill, either between
5 mm and 5.5 mm; for some products, these wires must in fact undergo two patentings, one at the delivery diameter, the other before finalizing.
<EMI ID = 3.1>
Patenting operation, various controlled cooling processes have already been proposed, for example the spraying of a liquid coolant or the blowing of a gaseous agent onto the wire generally arranged in loose turns. The most advantageous methods of this type currently known, and moreover generally reserved for wire rod made of hard steel, that is to say of steel with a carbon content of between 0.4% and 0.85%, do not allow however to delete only the prepatentage indicated above; these processes reduce the thickness of the scale layer formed on the wire without however eliminating the pickling in the wire drawing; finally, if they provide acceptable homogeneity along the length of the wire, this is even less than that obtained by patenting, in particular with lead.
Besides these processes, several of which operate at the industrial stage, it has been proposed to use the fluidized bed technique, which has made it possible to obtain satisfactory results with regard to the structure of the product. However, this fluidized wire technique has various drawbacks, among which we can cite the high cost of installation costs and maintenance costs due to the circulation of relatively abrasive materials, as well as the complexity of the technology. Moreover, the temperature homogeneity in the fluidized bed constitutes a problem which is difficult to solve; however, this homogenization is capital, because it conditions the desired homogeneity of the properties of the wire.
In another method of treating the wire rod, and in particular in a process already claimed elsewhere by the applicant, the wire rod, submitted as soon as it leaves the laminator
<EMI ID = 4.1>
produced in an aqueous bath brought to its boiling point, otherwise to a temperature close to it; preferably the bath contains in suspension and / or in solution materials such as salts (calcium chloride or sodium silicate or sodium tetraborate <EMI ID = 5.1> for example), surface-active substances or substances which reinforce the pickling power of the bath or allow electrolytic pickling.
This hot aqueous bath treatment process can be implemented both by keeping the turns in loose form, for example spread out on a conveyor, throughout their passage in the bath, and by forming compact coils, by tightening the turns at the bottom of the treatment tank.
The treatment of the wire rod by sudden cooling and immersion in such baths makes it possible to obtain excellent results thanks to the homogeneous nature of the application of the cooling agent contained in the tank and to the intrinsic qualities of this agent; it is possible, by judiciously choosing the nature, composition and temperature of the bath, to determine the optimum conditions for controlling the cooling of the yarn in order to give this yarn the desired quality.
<EMI ID = 6.1>
As it is currently applied, this method of treatment by immersion of the wire rod however still has some drawbacks, in particular in its application to the case of mild steel wire.
In the case of mild steel, in fact, the fact of rapidly cooling the wire causes an increase in the elastic limit and in the breaking load, which is troublesome especially when the wire is intended for fine drawing or hammering. cold.
The present invention relates to an improved implementation of the process for treating wire rod by immersion in a hot aqueous bath, as well as the installation required for this implementation, making it possible to eliminate these drawbacks.
The process for the treatment of wire rod, object of the present invention, is essentially characterized in that, as soon as it leaves the rolling mill, the wire rod is subjected to a sudden cooling phase with water and / or
air, in that the wire rod is introduced in the form
loosened turns in a tank containing an aqueous bath brought to a temperature close to its boiling point, and preferably equal to this, bath holding in solution and / or in suspension materials such as salts or substances surfactants, in that the conditions of immersion and stay of the wire in the bath are regulated to ensure the allotropic transformation of the steel, and in that, as soon as the wire is removed from the treatment bath, it is subjected to heating to a temperature between 250 [deg.] C and 400 [deg.] C.
Unexpectedly, the combination of rapid cooling and the subsequent reheating ensures complete and very easy precipitation of carbon and nitrogen, in the form of carbides and nitrides.
According to a preferred method of the process according to the invention, the wire reheating phase is carried out by leaving said wire to stay in an enclosure of suitable temperature.
The process of the invention can be applied to the wire whatever the form in which it is presented, deposited in loose turns on a conveyor or gathered in compact coils with a vertical axis or not.
According to the invention, the operating conditions of the wire reheating phase are advantageously controlled by adjusting the speed of circulation of the conveyor in the reheating chamber and / or the length of this chamber and / or the temperature and / or the heating gradient in said enclosure.
The length of stay of the yarn in the heating chamber is determined in particular as a function of the composition.
<EMI ID = 7.1> invention, it is generally between 1 and 5 minutes, part of this time can also be devoted to
<EMI ID = 8.1>
be warmed up.
Another subject of the present invention is an installation for implementing the method which has just been described.
The installation for the treatment of machina wire, object of the present invention, is characterized in that it comprises means for the sudden cooling of the wire rod as it passes, as soon as it leaves the rolling mill, means for the treatment of the submerged wire in loose turns in an aqueous bath, brought to a temperature close to and preferably equal to its boiling point, bath holding in solution and / or in suspension materials such as salts or surfactants, means for withdraw the wire rod from the bath treatment tank and the means for heating the wire to a temperature between 250 [deg.] C and 400 [deg.] C.
According to the invention, the means for heating the wire rod as it leaves the treatment bath include in particular a heated enclosure in which a conveyor circulates for transporting the wire rod.
The attached figure represents, purely by way of example, an installation in accordance with the present invention.
This installation is made up of three sections which are in order, starting at the exit of the last stand (1) of the rolling mill:
- a straight line water-air cooling ramp (2),
- A depositing head (3) for the turns and a well (4) containing the heat treatment solution;
the well is provided with heating means (5) (for example with steam), making it possible to maintain the solution at a temperature close to boiling, water supply means (6), means for the 'extraction of the spools of wire from the bath, the temperature of which is at this time generally between 100 [deg.] C and 200 [deg.] C, and means (7) for transferring these coils to the enclosure reheating,
- an enclosure (8) in the form of a tunnel, in which circulate the coils of wire deposited on a conveyor (9), enclosure provided with the heating means necessary for the treatment of the wire (heating and maintaining for a certain time at a temperature chosen between 250 [deg.] C and 400 [deg.] C).
