<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>

Process for processing mild steel wire rod
The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture, and more particularly for the treatment of wire rod, applicable especially to mild steel wire rod, that is to say made from a steel whose carbon content is less than 0.4%.
It is known that the quality of the wire rod results from all of the various conditions that the wire exhibits, among which we will mention by way of example, the dimensions
<EMI ID = 1.1> steel used and in particular the absence of any inclusions, the mechanical properties of the wire, in particular its drawability, due to the microstructure of the steel, the homogeneity
<EMI ID = 2.1>
surface appearance of the wire and in particular the oxidation state of the product.
Among these conditions which govern the final quality of a wire rod, the nature of the scale, the microstructure of the wire and the homogeneity of this microstructure depend, for a given composition, almost exclusively on the treatment undergone by the wire in the last cages. the rolling mill and the cooling rate of the wire at the outlet of the rolling mill. Achieving this cooling is precisely the problem for which many solutions have been recommended.
It is known that the wire rod, intended for wire drawing, generally undergoes a patenting treatment, intended to give the wire rod a structure suitable for drawing, a patenting treatment often carried out in the wire drawing industry. This treatment is expensive, especially when it concerns low tonnages of yarns, and when it comes to yarns which, for certain products, must in fact undergo two patentings, one at the delivery diameter, the other before finalizing.
To eliminate these patenting operations which, in addition to their cost, still have a certain name-
<EMI ID = 3.1>
tions which they require, the installations which they require, etc ..., many manufacturing processes for steel wires have been proposed. In some cases, the first pat ntage, applied to the wire obtained by hot rolling (prepatenting) can be omitted, provided however adequate cooling at the outlet of the rolling mill.
The methods recommended for carrying out the said adequate cooling are of different types, some of which use specific techniques (fluidized bed, etc.). Most, however, include an abrupt cooling phase followed by a lower rate temperature reduction phase, sometimes close to an isothermal treatment.
In the best known of the proposed methods, several of which operate at the industrial stage, so-called "tight" coils are no longer formed, but the
wire in expanded form, either flat or vertically. The successive turns move for example on a conveyor
where the projection of a liquid refrigerant or the blowing of a gaseous agent takes place. The most interesting of the processes
of this type currently known and moreover generally reserves in the wire rod of hard steel, that is to say of steel with a carbon content between 0.4% and 0.85
<EMI ID = 4.1>
above; these methods reduce the thickness of the scale layer formed on the wire; finally, they ensure acceptable homogeneity along the length of the wire, although it is still less than that obtained by patenting, in particular with lead.
In general, the controlled cooling processes are carried out according to a pace deduced from the CCT (Continuous Cooling - Transformation) or TTT (Temperature - Time - Transformation) diagrams relating to the steel, on which we have plotted, depending on the time and temperature, the well-known curves of the start and end of the allotropic transformation of austenite into ferrite-perlite. This rate is usually chosen such that the allotropic transformation begins at a temperature slightly above the nose of the start of transformation curve and ends at a temperature substantially equal to that corresponding to the nose of the end of transformation curve.
In doing so, the formation of proeutectoid ferrite as well as that of bainite and martensite is avoided as much as possible.
In a particular method of treating wire rod already claimed elsewhere by the Applicant, the wire rod subjected as it leaves the rolling mill to sudden cooling is wound up in loose turns and introduced into an aqueous bath brought to a temperature close to the temperature of 'boiling; preferably the bath contains in suspension and / or in solution, materials such as salts
(calcium chloride or sodium silicate or sodium tetraborate for example), surface-active substances or materials which enhance the pickling power of the bath or allow electrolytic pickling.
This hot aqueous bath treatment process can be implemented both by keeping the turns in loose form, for example spread out on a conveyor, throughout their passage in the bath, and by forming compact coils, by tightening the turns at the bottom of the treatment tank.
The treatment of the wire rod by sudden cooling and immersion in such baths makes it possible to obtain excellent results thanks to the homogeneous nature of the application of the cooling agent contained in the tank and to the intrinsic qualities of this agent; it is possible, by judiciously choosing the nature, the composition and the temperature of the bath, to determine the optimum conditions for controlling the cooling of the yarn in order to give this yarn the desired quality.
As it is currently applied, this method of treatment by immersion of the wire rod however still has some drawbacks, in particular in its application to the case of mild steel wire.
In the case of mild steel, in fact, the fact of rapidly cooling the wire causes an increase in the elastic limit and the breaking load, which is troublesome especially when the wire is intended for fine drawing or for hammering. cold.
The subject of the present invention is a process which makes it possible to obtain excellent rapid cooling results in a hot aqueous bath, in particular with regard to the homogeneity of the product, without disturbing increase in the elastic limit and in the breaking load.
The method, object of the present invention, is essentially characterized in that, before the entry of the yarn into the last or penultimate finishing stand, it is
<EMI ID = 5.1>
using water-air ramps and in that after leaving the last finishing stand, the yarn is subjected to a second sudden cooling by introducing it in the form of a winding in loose turns in an aqueous bath brought to a temperature close to the boiling point. Preferably, said aqueous bath contains, in suspension and / or in solution, materials such as salts or surface-active substances.
Due to the first cooling, the rolling carried out in the finishing stands is carried out in the austenitic and ferritic domains of the steel constituting the wire, which provides at the output of the rolling mill, a significant reduction in the elastic limit and the breaking load. . This significant reduction is compensated for by the effect of the second cooling which causes a variation in the opposite direction of the aforementioned mechanical properties.
The combined effect of rolling between points
<EMI ID = 6.1>
rolling mill is therefore to ensure obtaining a very homogeneous mild steel wire with low mechanical properties.
