<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
condition suivante :
<EMI ID=7.1>
Appliqué à des aciers doux-dont la composition est par exemple comprise dans les limites suivantes :moins de 0, 4 % de carbone, de 0, 20 à 0, 30 % de manganèse, de 0, 002 à 0, 005 % d'azote, de 0, 030 à 0, 050 % d'aluminium -
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>

"Process for manufacturing mild steel wire rod"
The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of
wire rod, especially applicable to mild steel wire rod, that is to say made from a steel with a carbon content of less than 0.4%.
It is known that the quality of the wire rod results from all of the various conditions presented by the wire, among which one will quote by way of example, the dimensions and the shape of the cross section of the wire, the cleanliness of the steel used
and in particular the absence of any inclusions, the mechanical properties
<EMI ID = 1.1>
transverse and longitudinal genealogy of this microstructure and finally, the aspect of
<EMI ID = 2.1> <EMI ID = 3.1>
Among these conditions which govern the final quality of a wire rod,
the nature of the scale, the micro structure of the wire and the homogeneity of this microstructure depend, for a given composition, almost exclusively on the treatment undergone by the wire in the last stands of the rolling mill and on the cooling rate of the wire at the out of the rolling mill. Achieving this cooling is precisely the problem for which many solutions
were advocated.
It is known that the wire rod, intended for drawing, generally undergoes
a patenting treatment, intended to give the wire rod a structure suitable for drawing, a patenting treatment often carried out in the drawing industry. This treatment is expensive, especially when it involves low tonnages of yarns and when it comes to yarns which, for certain products, must in fact undergo two patentings, one at the delivery diameter, the other before finalizing.
To eliminate these patenting operations which, in addition to their cost, still have a certain number of drawbacks, the main ones of which are
the manipulations they require, the installations they require, etc.
many methods of manufacturing steel wires have been proposed. In some cases, the first patenting, applied to the wire obtained by hot rolling
(prepatentage), can be omitted, provided, however, adequate cooling at the outlet of the rolling mill.
The methods recommended for carrying out the said adequate cooling are of different types, some of which use specific techniques (fluidized bed, etc.). Most, however, include an abrupt cooling phase followed by a lower rate temperature reduction phase, sometimes close to an isothermal treatment.
In the best known of the proposed methods, several of which operate at the industrial stage, so-called "tight" coils are no longer formed, but the wire is placed in expanded form, either flat or vertically. The successive turns move for example on a conveyor where the projection of a liquid refrigerant or the blowing of a gaseous agent takes place. The most interesting methods of this kind currently known only make it possible to eliminate
the prepatentage indicated above; these processes decrease the thickness of the
<EMI ID = 4.1> layer of scale formed on the wire; finally, they ensure acceptable homogeneity along the length of the wire, although it is still less than that obtained by patenting, in particular with lead.
In a particular method of treating wire rod already claimed elsewhere by the Applicant, the wire rod subjected as it leaves the rolling mill to sudden cooling is wound up in loose turns and introduced.
<EMI ID = 5.1>
The treatment of the wire rod by sudden cooling and immersion in such baths makes it possible to obtain excellent results thanks to the homogeneous nature of the application of the cooling agent contained in the tank and to the intrinsic qualities of this agent; one can, by choosing nature wisely.
the composition and the temperature of the bath, determining the optimum conditions for controlling the cooling of the yarn in order to give this yarn the desired quality.
As they are currently applied, the treatment processes which have just been recalled have, however, only provided satisfactory results in the case of hard steel wire, that is to say steel with a carbon content. is between 0.4% and 0.85%; the various processes in fact still have some drawbacks in their application to the case of mild steel wire.
In the case of mild steel, in fact, the fact of rapidly cooling the wire causes an increase in the elastic limit and the breaking load, which is troublesome especially when the wire is intended for fine drawing, - because the breaks are then frequent-, or cold heading.
The present invention relates to a process for improving the quality of mild steel wires, by applying them the treatments known for hard steels, without annoying increase in the elastic limit and the breaking load and without requiring intermediate annealing. .
The method, object of the present invention, is essentially characterized in that one causes an enlargement of the austenitic grain of the steel before subjecting said steel to a controlled cooling treatment.
<EMI ID = 6.1>
According to the invention, the austenitic grain of the mild steel is enlarged by adding boron to said steel during its production.
In a preferred embodiment of this particular implementation of the process of the invention, the boron content of the steel subjected to controlled cooling is between 0.0005% and 0.008%.
According to another modality of this implementation, the ratio of the boron content (in%) to the nitrogen content (in%) of mild steel corresponds to the
following condition:

sudden cooling Imposed on the wire rod, for example by the corresponding CCT curves, to give it a satisfactory structure.
The example below, given purely by way of illustration, of the process of the invention, clearly shows the result which can be achieved.
The wire rod produced is made of mild steel with the following composition:
<EMI ID = 9.1>
The wire, leaving the last stand of the rolling mill at a temperature of approximately 1000 [deg.] C, is subjected to a primary cooling before being deposited, at approximately 880 [deg.] C, on a conveyor where it is subjected for 8 seconds to a homogenization phase before undergoing intense secondary cooling.
The final ferritic grain of the wire rod in question is 7 ASTM whereas it was 10 ASTM, when the controlled cooling which has just been described was applied to a steel of the same content of carbon, manganese, aluminum and
