Abstract

Before the flue gases enter the scrubber they pass through a mixing chamber into which cold air is drawn via slots in the wall due to a partial vacuum produced in the scrubber by an extractor fan and relieved via an air duct with control valve between the mixer and the scrubber. The walls of the two chambers and of the upper transfer duct joining them are sprayed with cooled water, which also humidifies the cold air inlet to the mixer. The sprayed water is recycled from the troughs forming water seals with the various junctions of major parts of the plant, via over flows and a reservoir feeding the spray pump. Waste heat from a heat exchanger at the base of the scrubber is used to dry and/or oxidise the effluent gases.
