<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Improvements concerning the closure of containers.
The present invention relates to containers and more particularly to containers comprising a transparent envelope.
Containers of this kind are obviously advantageous in many cases because they allow visual inspection of their contents and this is achieved in various ways. For example in containers that are discarded after use it is quite common to use, as an envelope, a thin sheet of regenerated cellulose or a transparent synthetic resin, the sheet being either used to completely wrap. the container to be covered, is used as a cover for the mouth only, by fixing to the container the edges of the sheet constituting said cover, for example by mechanical means.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It has already been found that containers can be sealed very effectively by means of a process involving on the one hand a container having a rim and on the other hand some type of flat film made of plastic.
The present invention relates to a method of closing a container in which a flat blank of a thin, film made of a dual orientation plastic material is placed in line with the mouth of the container, a marginal portion. protruding beyond the rim of the container; this protruding marginal portion of the thin film is then curved around the rim of the container; the curved marginal part is then heated so as to shrink it against the container, and at the same time the thin film is welded to the upper part of the rim of the container, the materials constituting the container and the thin film being chosen so that this welding can occur.
The dual orientation plastic film may advantageously consist of polystyrene or a polymer of styrene and may, for example, consist of the material sold under the name "Polyflex".
The closure thus obtained combines the advantages of a, ¯, recession seal as well as those of a heat-welded seal and is more satisfactory than either of these seals taken individually; a seal obtained by shrinkage does not in itself allow a completely sealed closure, while a hot seal; used alone, always presents the risk of a local faulty workmanship in the welding due to the local pollution of the surfaces to be welded by the packaged materials.
The closure according to the present invention provides greatly improved safety since leakage can only occur if a defect in the weld coincides with a defect in the shrinkage seal.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
So that a weld can occur between the container and the closing film, it is necessary that one chooses for these parts, materials which can be made to diffuse one into the other by application of heat and pressure. Suitably polystyrene can be used as the material of the container and, for the closure sheet, a thin sheet of dual orientation polystyrene, but still other mutually compatible materials can be used. is lying.
These materials can be materials which have been made capable of being welded together by deposition, at least on the. marginal region of one of them, a layer of a material compatible with the material constituting the other part, or the marginal regions of the two materials can be treated in this way. Thus, for example, a container, made of a certain material, can be closed with a shrink-wrapped film with a double orientation consisting of a different material, coated with a layer of material similar to that of the container or compatible with a layer deposited on it. the marginal part of the surface of the container.
The present invention also relates to an apparatus for closing containers by implementing the aforementioned method and the way of carrying out the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying diagram which represents an embodiment of the invention. device according to the present invention.
In the drawing: FIG. 1 is a vertical section of certain parts made up of an apparatus intended for closing containers, showing the position of said apparatus before the beginning of the closing operation: FIG. 2 is an identical view showing a later stage of the closure operation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In the apparatus shown, a plunger 3, movable in the vertical direction, comprises arms 4 projecting in the lateral direction and from which is suspended a heating ring 5, spacers 6, made of a weak material. - conductor of heat, being interposed so as to reduce the propagation of heat to the plunger. Ring 5 is; heated by an electric element 7. Ring-shaped members 8 and 9 which are also heated from element 7 are in close contact with ring 5.
A fixing plate 10 is supported so as to be able to slide by the plunger 3 and is forced downwards into the position shown in FIG. 1 by the action of a spring. 11. The plate 10 is not in direct contact with the members 8 and 9, but receives a certain quantity of heat by radiation from said members and is at a temperature lower than that of said members.
Below the sealing tool which has just been described, a container 12, intended to be closed, rests on a fixed support 13. As can be seen, the container has the shape of a bowl and comprises, around its mouth, an annular and horizontal rim 14 projecting outwards.
A frame member 15 is mounted between the container and the sealing tool so that it can move integrally downward against the action of a restoring force. The frame 15 comprises an internal shoulder and, a flat blank 16, of circular shape, cut from a film of plastic material with double orientation, is deposited, simply, on the annular seat formed by this shoulder.
The parts being in the position shown in Figure 1, the plunger 3 is lowered so that the lower surface of the ring 8 bears against the upper surface of the frame 15 and moves the latter downward, thus lowering
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the blank 16 up to the rim 14 of the container. Due to the continuous downward movement of the plopger 3, the ring 8 moves the frame 15 downward, disengaging it from the blank 16 and the ring itself comes into contact with the marginal part of the blank. .
At this stage of the movement, the fixing plate 10, which is mounted on a spring, bears against the blank and holds it by the force of its spring, strongly pressed against the upper surface of the rim of the container. The fastener has a diameter just greater than the inside diameter of the container at its mouth so that part of the blank 16 resting on the rim 14 is left uncovered. Due to the continuous downward movement of the plunger 3, the ring 8 folds down the marginal part of the blank 16.
The inner surface of the ring 8 has conical grooves, as shown at 17, so as to produce a regular smoothing of the rim of the blank returned towards the back. Finally, the lower edge of the ring
9 comes into contact with the marginal part of the upper part of the blank 16 and pushes the latter against the upper surface of the rim 13 of the container, the parts then being in the position of figure 2.
When the parts are in the position of Figure 2, the ring 8 heats the downwardly facing lid rim and shrinks it until it comes into close contact with the container rim 14; the heated ring 9 welds the lid to the container; and the less heated element 10 assists the top of the cover to shrink sufficiently so that it is flat and taut. The length of time during which the different parts must be held in the position of Fig. 2 depends on several factors including the thickness and other characteristics of the thin plastic sheet as well as the temperature of the components 8 and 9.
After remaining in the position of figure 2 for the time necessary to carry out the welding and the shrinking
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
cover so that the latter comes into close contact - with the container the plunger 3 is raised to the position of figure 1 allowing the frame 15 to move upwards and leaving the sealed container unobstructed in view removal and replacement with a new container.
