<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to an improved process for the oxidation of organic substances using oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas.
It is known to oxidize organic compounds with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas, carrying out the oxidation in a liquid medium such as water or a stable organic solvent, usually. a carboxylic acid. It is also known that in many oxidation processes, the presence of oxidation catalysts is essential, even to obtain small yields, and that certain metals can be used as catalysts. The most interesting catalysts are metals with variable valence such as cobalt, chromium, manganese, lead, iron,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
le = drunk, nickel and vanadium. It is also known to shorten reaction times and improve yields by working under high pressures and temperatures.
Belgian patent no.550.529 describes a process for the oxidation of organic compounds in an organic liquid medium, stable under the oxidation conditions used, by means of oxygen or a gas containing oxygen, and in the presence, if desired, an oxidation catalyst, wherein the oxidation is carried out in the presence of bromine or a substance containing bromine. This improvement can be achieved when the oxidation process is carried out at atmospheric pressure or under high pressure and high temperature.
The present invention provides a process for the oxidation of organic compounds which themselves, or their intermediates or their final oxidation products are solid low-melting carboxylic acids or liquid carboxylic acids, by means of oxygen or oxygen. 'an oxygen-containing gas, in the presence of one or more catalytic metals and bromine or a bromine-containing substance, wherein the reaction medium is solid low-melting carboxylic acid or liquid carboxylic acid or its anhydride and in the presence, if desired, of an inert diluent.
Examples of organic compounds capable of being oxidized by the process of the present invention to solid carboxylic acids with a low melting point or to liquid carboxylic acids are toluene, cumene, ethylbenzene, acetophenone, alcohol. benzyl, benzaldehyde, benzyl chloride, benzoline, ortho-xylene, methyl para-toluate. The oxidation of these compounds can be carried out continuously if a certain amount of the final product is present initially.
Examples of organic compounds capable of being oxidized by the process of the present invention to liquid or solid low-melting intermediate oxidation products are
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
given by the para- and meta-xylenes. The oxidation of these compounds can be carried out on a continuous basis if a certain amount of the intermediate oxidation product, for example the para or meta-tolulic acids respectively, is present initially.
Examples of organic compounds which are themselves low melting point solid carboxylic acids or liquid carboxylic acids are given by para- and orthotoluc acids. These compounds can easily be continuously oxidized by the process of the present invention.
Catalytic metals are commonly used in the form of oxides or salts and preferably in a form such that the metal ion is available, the preferred catalytic metals being manganese and cobalt. As the source of the metal ion and the bromine or the bromine containing substance, metal bromides such as cobalt and manganese bromides, separately or together, or a salt or salts of the metal (s) can be used. capable of forming the catalytic metal ion, such as manganese or cobalt acetates, in conjunction with a substance capable of forming a bromide ion under the conditions of the reaction.
For this purpose, it is possible to use hydrobromic acid, sodium bromide or any other easily soluble bromide, or else an organic bromide, such as an alkyl or aryl-alkyl bromide.
It is believed that bromine acts as the bromide ion during the process and that only small amounts of bromine are really needed to effect the reaction. Therefore, it is preferred to use substances containing bromine which dissolve, at least to some extent, in the reaction medium.
The process of the present invention can be carried out, if desired, in the presence of inert diluents, and, for example, the oxidation of toluene or pa.ra-toluic acid can be carried out in ortho-dichlorobenzene. .
If desired, the reaction medium can be formed in situ and in such modes of operation it is preferred to use a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
oil soluble catalyst ,. such as cobalt naphthenate, in conjunction with a substance containing bromine.
The following examples, in which the parts and percentages are expressed by weight, illustrate the present invention without, however, limiting it.
