<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

The present invention relates to packages or cartons provided with folding chutes.
One of the objects of the present invention is to produce a carton of collapsible material, provided with an improved model chute which, when closed, closes the carton hermetically and this even after the roll has been opened and repeatedly closed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Another object of the invention is to provide a carton of this type with a chute constructed so as to remain open by itself in any of a number of adjustable positions between its fully open or fully open positions. fully closed, to allow easy pouring of the contents of the cardoon with a variable and regulated deoit.
Yet another object of the invention is to produce a carton of this kind the folding roll of which is designed in such a way that it can be closed easily and quickly by simply tapping the open chute.
Yet another object of the present invention is to produce a carton of this type in which the folding chute, when fully closed, is locked in its closed position so that it cannot be opened without being able to be opened. 'a force is applied to it which force, although small, must however be sufficient to release the lock.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide the folding chute with an arra @ hable tongue fixed in a separable manner at one end of the chute, this tongue, when the carton is completely assembled, and that it is still attached to the chute, decreasing, even if it does not completely eliminate the risk of accidental opening of the chute, even when the cardboard is subjected to appreciable forces, for example when it is dropped.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will emerge from the following detailed description.

health extending along said rim, to receive this closing paste.
In the most advanced form of the invention, the closure tab is provided with a tear-off tab arranged in the permanent end closure member of the carton, against the through slot, so that when the carton is assembled and closed, the tear-off tab can be easily separated from the closure tab when opening the carton for the first time, and once it has been so separated, one edge of this tab forms an inner edge of the through slot which receives the closing tab. Thanks to this arrangement, the risk of an untimely opening of the chute is reduced, if not completely eliminated,
even if the carton is subjected to appreciable force, for example during an accidental fall of the carton.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, preferred embodiments of the invention, without limiting the invention in any way. In these drawings: Fi. 1 is a partial plan view of a blank which can be folded to constitute the discharge end of the carton. In this figure, as well as in FIGS. 1A, 2 and 3, the gluing rulers have been represented by dotted surfaces.

Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the package with the chute fully open in a discharge position;
Fig. '7 is a partial perspective view of a variant in which the chute is not provided with a tear-off tab.
As shown in Figure 1, the blank part intended to form by folding, the discharge end of the carton comprises a narrow gluing flap 1, a partial gluing flap 2 provided with a side lug 9, and gluing flaps 4, 5 and 5A. The partial gluing flap 2 includes a region 2 'which does not receive glue and which cooperates with an upper part
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
of the narrow gluing flap 1 to which the gluing flap 2 adheres to form the through slot which is described below. When the flaps 1, 2, 4 and 5 are folded as shown in Figure 4, they form the permanently closing portion of the discharge end of the carton.
The foldable chute comprises a quadrangular bottom 3 provided with a closing tab 7 and a tear-off gluing tab 6. Perforations 8 separate the closing tab 7 from the tear-off tab.
6 in order to allow the tab 7 to be easily detached from said tongue 6. On two opposite sides of the bottom wall 3 are articulated the side walls 2B and 4B The side wall 2B is provided with diagonal folds
10, 11, forming articulated triangular sections or panels H, and a fold 12 which forms one of the edges of a release flap 13. The side wall 4B is provided with a diagonal fold 10 which there divides into two hinged panels.
The carton is mounted in the usual way, securing the narrow gluing flap 5-5A to the narrow gluing flap 1 and the packaging side of the wall 1A respectively, thus forming the tubular body of the carton with the various flaps. glue and the other flaps extending outward. Once the glue has been applied to the dotted regions shown in the drawing, the glue flap 4 is folded inward by 90 degrees relative to the side wall and the narrow glue flap 1 is folded back and glued to it as shown in the figure. figure 2.
The side walls in
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
bellows 2B and 4B are then folded back on themselves and the bottom wall 3 of the chute is folded back inside 90 from the walls of the container, the tear-off tab 6 being glued to the shutter 1, thus fixing the chute in its closed position shown in Figure 3. The partial gluing flap 2 with its side lug 9 is then folded and adheres to the narrow flap 1, while the lug 9 adheres to the side wall of the container as the shows Figure 4, which completes the container and closure. It will be noted that, in this position, the glue-free region 2 ′ covers the closure tab 7.
The carton is then ready to be filled with product from its opposite end, which is then closed in a conventional manner.
When it is desired to open the container, the bottom wall 3 'of the discharge chute is moved away from the packaging by tearing the perforations 8 and partially opening the chute to bring it to the position shown in the figure' 5, - When it is desired to open the chute fully, it is pulled down to the position shown in Figure 6, in which the hinged side walls 2B and 4B form a V-shaped discharge chute through. which. 'the contents of the carton can be poured as shown in figure' 6.
The dimensions of this chute, to regulate the discharge, can be changed by simply moving the bottom wall 3 upwards from the position shown in figure 6. The frictional contact between the tops of the side walls 2B and 4B maintains
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
these sidewalls in any of a number of positions in which they can be placed in order to vary the dimensions of the discharge opening of the discharge chute.
To close the chute, the bottom wall 3 is folded down and the chute automatically folds back to the position shown in figure 5. From this position it can be completely closed by engaging the closing tab 7 in the through slot. P. In this position, the foldable chute is completely closed and again ensures complete closure of the box.
In the closed position of the chute, the side walls of the chute as well as the upper part of the bottom wall 3 rest on the flange L formed on the lower end of the narrow gluing flap 1, which end, like as will be noted, is disposed just above the discharge opening.
To reopen the chute, you simply pull the bottom wall 3 of the chute outwards, removing the tab 7 from the slot or slot P.
The tear-off tab 6 remains in place as an integral part of the permanent end closure of the carton, forming one of the edges of the pass-through slot P.
Shoulders S (Figures 3 and 5) formed in the lower ends of the permanent end closure portion, on either side of the region where the tear-off tab 6 is separated from the tab 7, help retain the tab. chute in its closed position by
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
preventing movement of the bellows-side walls 2B and 4B, thanks to the -fact that the upper edge of the release flap 13 comes. stand in front of the terminal edge of shutter 2 '(fig. 5) and abut against the shoulders S.
The flap 13 allows the side wall 2B to be released from the closed position without damaging it. It is ar-. ticked on the side wall 2B according to the folds 12 (fig.5).
In . the variant of Figure 7, the bottom wall 3 of the chute is provided with a tab 7 intended to be engaged in, a through slot P. In the cardboard of Figure 7, we do not use a corresponding tear-off tab - laying 'on the tongue' 6 of the embodiment of Figures 1 to 6.
In these two variants, the folds 10 and 11 formed in the side walls of the chute allow the latter to be folded inwards, the flaps of the side wall 2B being interposed between the knots of the side wall 4B and the side wall 4B. bottom 3 * In this interposed position, the side wall 2B rests on the edge L. The diagonal folds 10 and 11 produce a bellows-like fold converge approximately at the top of the folds, as shown in figure 6, and thus forming , with the bottom wall 3 a tubular funnel-shaped chute.
As a result of the frictional engagement between the side walls at their junction point, the dimensions of the discharge opening of the chute can be adjusted as desired. This frictional engagement is sufficient to retain the chute in any of its partial discharge opening adjustment positions.
However, the friction is not strong enough to prevent the chute from closing. By tapping or pushing
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
simply the bottom wall of the chute.
The fold 11 formed in the side wall 2B of the chute allows the latter to deflect enough to be easily inserted between a flap of the other side wall 4B and the bottom wall 3. Consequently, when pressure is applied closing to the bottom wall 3, the opening of the chute and therefore also the discharge opening of the carton are practically closed when the chute assumes the position shown in Figure 5, referred to herein as "quick-close" position.
Even if the carton were to be overturned, with its chute underneath, when the chute is in its quick-closing position, the contents of the carton would not escape through the chute (or only escape through the chute. 'in negligible quantity), because any opening of the chute in this last position, under the weight of the contents of the carton will be thwarted by the considerable friction between the side walls 2B and 4B and the bottom wall 3 when these walls are in the position shown in figure 5.
When the chute is in its fully open position, shown in figure 6, a slight pressure on the bottom wall 3 will cause the chute to assume the quick-close position, shown in 5. This is mainly due to the tension. exerted by the side walls 2B and 4B, it will be noted that, in this rapid closing position, the release flap 13 as well as the upper edge of the side wall 2B cover the rim L, and the flap 13 penetrates dalis the end of slot
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
pass-through P and abuts against the shoulders S, thus effectively closing the discharge opening.
Fig. 1A shows the parts, corresponding to the discharge ends, of two blanks nested one inside the other to enable cutting by common lines with a view to saving material during manufacture. blanks.
The carton according to the present invention provides a convenient packaging for the discharge of products. The chute can be opened and closed easily and repeatedly. When closed, it effectively closes the carton, particularly when the chute is brought to its fully closed position, with the engagement tab inserted into the through slot. Even in the quick-close position, which the chute automatically assumes whenever the side walls are moved enough to overcome the frictional resistance between them, the chute acts as a closure for the discharge opening.
As can be seen, the chute is designed so that it remains open by itself in any of a number of adjustable positions between its fully closed and fully closed positions. opening, to allow easy tilting of the contents with a regulated variable flow. A simple tap on the back wall of the open caster is enough to make it assume the quick-close position.
