Figs 1 et la sont une vue en élévation, partie en coupe, illus- trant une réalisation de montage de cylindre selon l'invention ;

The invention relates to rolling mills such as those used, for example, for the manufacture of sections from sheet metal strips.
In such rolling apparatus as described, for example, in Applicants' English Patents Nos. 477,581 and 584,978, bearing housings for the axes of the upper and lower rolls are provided with flanges which engage with columns or columns. support cage, so as to allow the adjustment of the rolling pressure, and the removal and re-installation or replacement of the rolls, by a vertical movement of raising and lowering relative to the cages. In these prior arrangements, the flanges of the bearing housings are suitable for providing the axial location of the axes of the cylinders, and closely adapt to the sliding surfaces of the cages.
It has been observed that damage is likely to occur to the flanges of the bearing housings, due to the difficulty of keeping the axes of the cylinders horizontal, or nearly horizontal, during lifting and lowering for removal, and replacement or reinstallation of cylinders.
Further, due to the precise axial location of the upper and lower cylinders, the assembly of sectioned cylinders according to applicants' British Patent 477,590 frequently involves the use of thin thicknesses to align the profile of a cylinder with that. the other.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved roll-rolling mill arrangement, whereby removal and placement or replacement of rolls can be facilitated, and obviating the need for replacement. precise alignment of the upper and lower cylinders.
According to the invention, a housing? bearing of each cylinder assembly is provided with oscillation keys, such as journals engaging guide tracks in the respective cages, so that when the bearing housing is found to be located against movement. The axis of the cylinder is capable of tilting away from the horizontal, and the other bearing housing is devoid of side flanges engaging internal and external guide surfaces of the cage, in such a way that when the The cylinder assembly is removed or put back in place or replaced it can freely swing around the axis of the oscillation means. Preferably
the oscillating means comprise journals established in the form of elongated blocks lost by the ends of axes mounted for rotation in diametrically opposed holes of the bearing housing, and adapted to slide in closely fitting guides formed in fa- These opposing internals of the cage or columns Conveniently, the bearing housings of the upper and lower cylinder assemblies which are oscillating medium are arranged to cooperate with the same column or cage.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the cushion mounted in the tilting housing of one of the cylinders, preferably the upper cylinder, is capable of moving axially in its housing, to a limited extent, by so as to provide some end float, allowing the mating rolls to assume their correct co-operative or meshing position without requiring precise initial alignment of the rolls. This allows a certain margin of error or tolerance in the axial length of a sectioned cylinder assembly according to the aforementioned British Patent 477590, and hence obviates the need to use thicknesses in the assembly.
In the construction shown in British patents 477,581 and 477,590. the upper and lower cylinders are intermeshed mainly

payment for the purpose of keeping the upper cylinder against rotation while the lock nut (s) holding the cylinder on its axis is or are loosened or tightened.
In accordance with yet another characteristic of the invention, the obligation to mesh the cylinders with one another is avoided by providing one end of the axis of the upper cylinder with a hexagon or other head which can be engaged by a key or a key. appropriate tool.
The invention is described below, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figs 1 and 1a are an elevational view, partly in section, illustrating an embodiment of cylinder mounting according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view and partial section corresponding to FIG. 1, which shows the cages in which the bearing housings are arranged; and,
Fig. 3 is a section taken along line III-III of FIG. 1.
Carrying out the invention according to one embodiment, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, the axes of the upper and lower rolls 1, 2 respectively, are supported by bearing housings mounted in cages 3, 3a (Fig. 2. ). This axis is carried by bearings 4. preferably roller bearings of the self-aligning type. A bush 4 is arranged in a bearing housing 5 which, as shown in FIG. 2, does not include

side flanges engaging the inner and outer faces of the corresponding cage 3 for the axial location of the bearing housing 5.
The other bearing housing 6 is provided with oscillation means in the form of elongated blocks with a trunnion 7 carried by the ends of pins 8 capable of rotating in diametrically opposed holes made in the part forming the body. 6a of the bearing housing, the axle ends being held in place in said holes by means of dowels 9 engaging a circumferential groove 8a of the axle end 8

1 and 2, which allow a certain float in mud, in the axial direction, of the corresponding pad, relative to the housing, so that the cylinder, in particular the upper one, can automatically adjust its position relative to the other cylinder, in particular the lower one.
The end caps 6b of the other three housings are established to locate their respective bearings in the axial direction.
EMI2.7
To the effect that the upper cylinder 1 can be kept in the

against rotation as a locking nut is unscrewed from, or screwed onto a threaded end portion 1a of axle 1, the opposite end of axle 1 is provided with a hex head or other shape suitable, 1b, with a view to its engagement by a key or other suitable tool, thus avoiding the need - 'to mesh the cylinders together.
It should be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular embodiment described above. For example, any other suitable arrangement of oscillating means may be provided to locate a bearing housing of each cylinder axis against axial movement. If desired, the two cages or columns can include guide tracks, and a bearing housing of a cylinder axis can include oscillation means cooperating with the guide tracks of a cage or column, while that a bearing housing opposite the other cylinder axis can comprise oscillation means cooperating with the guide tracks of the other cage or column.
