<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Les conditions physiques à remplir par les laitiers sont donc les mêmes que celles qui sont exigée, pour le procédé de coulée sous laitier qui fait l'objet du brevet principal; les laitiers doivent être fortement surchauffés et présenter à la température de solidi- fication du métal une viscosité faible et une tension interfaciale métal-laitier élevée;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc / Clms Page number 1>
In its main patent application of July 3, 1956, the applicant described a process for obtaining ingots with a smooth surface and great miorographic cleanliness, which consists in preparing a liquid slag, of a composition such that it exhibits at the solidification temperature of the metal a low viscosity and a high interfaoial tension with the cast metal, in superheating this slag to a temperature much higher than the temperature at which it becomes liquid, in rapidly pouring the slag thus overheated in the ingot mold intended to receive the metal and to fill it preferably completely,
pouring the metal into a slag immediately after filling the mold, the slag flowing as the metal enters it and then being recovered, preferably in the liquid state, for reuse.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
read in subsequent operations.
In this same main patent application, the Applicant has described a device for carrying out the above process, which allows the very rapid pouring of the slag into the ingot mold and the pouring of the metal into the ingot mold immediately after filling of the mold. this one. French
On the other hand, in its patents / N 843,367 of February 10, 1938 relating to a process for the detention of steels exhibiting great micrographic cleanliness and N 861,157 of November 17, 1938 relating to an economical and rapid process for obtaining high quality steel, the applicant described a process for the desulphurization and deoxidation of steel by vigorous stirring of liquid steel with slags based on alumina and lime, or on silica, alumina and lime.
The implementation of this process is most often carried out by pouring from a sufficient height and / or with a jet of sufficient thickness the liquid steel to be treated, after addition of an element. reducing agent, in a pocket containing the previously melted slag, The violence of the pouring causes an emulsion of the slag in the metal; the slag-metal contact surface is thus significantly increased and the reactions between metal and slag are accelerated to such an extent that at the end of the pouring a state close to equilibrium between the two phases is reached. The slag settles from the metal in the ladle, after which the steel is ready to be poured into ingots.
These processes lead, by a simple stirring operation, from a steel which has not undergone particular deoxidation and desulphurization operations in the furnace, to a perfectly purified liquid ladle steel.
However, the applicant's studies have led her to believe that, by a judicious choice of the type of slag as well as of their use, it would be possible to benefit from the advantages of the two types of methods which have just been: to be recalled above, to know:
a very rapid and complete purification and, simultaneously, the ob-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
tention of ingots with good surfaces and great mierographic cleanliness. Elis was thus led to the process which is the subject of the invention, thanks to which it is / can be obtained perfectly desulphurized and deoxidized steel ingots having excellent surface qualities (in particular: smooth surfaces, absence of folds, cold droplets, cracks, etc.) making it possible to avoid any significant subsequent peeling, and at the same time exhibiting an almost total absence of oxidized non-metallic inclusions which lead to the appearance of conventional machining defects.
This process, which constitutes an improvement of that which is described in the main patent application of July 3, 1956, consists in preparing a desulfurizing slag, for example of the type described in the patents of February 10 and November 17, 1938, by choosing a composition such as the said slag exhibits, at the solidification temperature of the metal, a low viscosity and a high interfaoial tension with the metal, to superheat the slag well above its melting temperature, to pour the slag thus overheated rapidly in the ingot mold intended to receive the metal and to fill the latter preferably completely,
in pouring the metal to be purified, after adding a reducing element to it, into this slag immediately after filling the mold, the slag then flowing from the mold as the metal enters it and then being recovered, preferably in the liquid state.
The physical conditions to be fulfilled by the slags are therefore the same as those which are required for the slag casting process which is the subject of the main patent; the slags must be highly superheated and exhibit, at the solidification temperature of the metal, a low viscosity and a high metal-slag interfacial tension;
these last two conditions being essential to allow ingot to be obtained, having both a surface zone free from defects and good micrographic cleanliness.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
moreover, the slags in accordance with the process of the invention must also have a composition such that they have a high desulphurizing power with respect to the metal. among the known desulfurizing compositions, it is not possible to indicate all those which are likely to be satisfactory in the present process, but a person skilled in the art will be able to guide his choice in terms of based on the following rules as well as on the examples which will be given below.
We. will implement preferably slags based on silica, alumina and lime, the lime being able to be partially or totally replaced by other basic compounds such as barite, strontian, soda.
The desulphurizing compositions recommended in the aforementioned patents of the applicant are generally satisfactory, provided that the viscosity and interfacial tension conditions essential to the process are observed, as will be indicated below. More generally, it is possible to have recourse to compositions based on lime, aluminate, magnesia and silica satisfying the condition: cao% + MgO% + 3/4 AlgOg% 60.
Of course, this zone will take the compositions whose melting point is not too high. In the case of slags based on alumina, lime and silica, we can refer to the classic diagram of fusibility of SiO2, CaO, Al2O3 mixtures and choose from
2 2 3 This diagram shows low melting point compositions.
Conventional fluidifying additions can also be made such as alkali or alkaline earth compounds, fluorspar, titanium oxide, but in such proportions that they do not detrimentally reduce the temperature. metal-slag interfacial tension. The Applicant has in fact observed that excessively large additions of the last two elements mentioned significantly lowered this interfacial tension, which causes milk emulsions.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
metal which is difficult to remove and leads to unusable ingots.
If one uses a slag exhibiting all of the above-indicated characteristics, fulfilling the required conditions of temperature, viscosity and interfaoial tension, one obtains a surprising result that the slag exerts its purifying action during the very long time. short which flows between the moment the liquid metal is poured into the mold and the metal solidifies,
In addition, the slag emulsion in the metal which inevitably forms during the casting operation is destroyed before the solidification of the metal, so that the metal is free of oxidized inclusions, and finally, thanks to the formation on the wall of the mold of a thin layer of solid or glassy slag,
the surface area of the cast ingot is free from the conventional defects inherent in the usual casting methods.
It should be noted that the purified action of the slag is exerted, in the process according to the invention, under very different conditions from those previously claimed by the Applicant, according to which a very poor slag-metal mixing was sought. tense in a pocket. stirring action due to violating pouring of the metal into the slag is practically non-existent in the present process. In addition, if one sought to produce it in an ingot mold there would be a risk of causing violent projections.de metal against the walls, which would lead to the formation of unacceptable ingot surfaces. Also the casting of the metal in the ingot mold is carried out according to civic methods without looking for particular agitation effect.
It is therefore possible to pour from the ladle into the ingot mold using the same types of nozzles as in ordinary slag casting and we will bring into play flow speeds of the same order,
The Applicant has denied the fact that this absence of violent stirring is here compensated by the proportion of the slag used relative to the metal, which is much greater.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
than in the load in the pocket. The metal jet, at least at the start of casting, passes through a very high slag height, since the lincotière is practically completely filled with slag.
If, in accordance with the invention, the slag is greatly overheated and very fluid, the purifying action manifests itself in an intense manner. If, on the contrary, the conditions of fluidity, temperature and interfacial tension are not respected, the ingot obtained is not satisfactory, neither from the point of view of its surface, nor from the point of view of its miorogxaphic cleanliness.
It is therefore, ultimately, all of the various conditions mentioned above which makes it possible to achieve the threefold desired result: desulphurization, good surface of the ingot and micrographic cleanliness.
One of the requirements of the process is, as we have just seen, the use of a large quantity of slag, since, following the preferred operating mode of the invention, the mold is completely filled, this would be an economic disadvantage. of the process if, in accordance with a final feature of the invention, the slag was not recovered after each operation. The nature of the slag used and its temperature lend themselves well to such a recovery. In practice, the slag flowing from the mold will be collected in a suitable container and it will preferably be recharged directly in the liquid state in a tank. slag melting furnace used to supply the entire installation.
The slag, after the operation, will be slightly loaded with sulfur, but, after the mass of slag used will have been very large in relation to the metal, the increase in the sulfur content will be very small and it will be possible. - Sible, by introducing a small proportion of fresh matter into the slag after each operation, to compensate for this increase in the sulfur content. In many cases, this introduction may correspond to the loss of slag during handling.
If it is not sufficient, it will also be necessary to remove a small part of the slag and replace it with slag
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
moreover, the covering of the slag in an ingot mold presents other advantages over the operation in a soft pocket. On the one hand, it makes it possible to correct the inevitable reoxidation effect produced by the action of the atmosphere on the metal jet during casting, since the reaction with the slag takes place after this oxidation effect.
On the other hand, it eliminates a constraint linked to the mixing in the ladle: the retention of "parasitic" slags, we know that it is necessary, when a liquid steel is poured from the furnace into the ladle to stir it with a molten slag being in this pocket, to avoid with great care the passage in the pocket of the slag which is still normally on the metal bath in the furnace, even after a careful scrubbing. This "parasitic" slag in fact pollutes the slag in the bag, decreases its action or makes it irregular from one pour to another. We are therefore required to take special precautions to avoid this pollution.
On the contrary, in the process which is the subject of the invention, this risk is eliminated, since the metal can be poured into the slag in ingot molds, not directly from a furnace, but according to the usual methods in steel, by means of a ladle which empties from the bottom. Even though "parasitic" slag may have passed from the oven into the ladle, it remains in the latter on the surface of the metal bath and does not flow with the metal into the mold.
The process which is the subject of the invention makes it possible to produce high-quality steels, in the form of perfectly clean micrographically ingots and having surface areas free from defects, starting from an oxidized steel containing sulfur, molten in. any device: narrow furnace, Martin furnace or converter, Provided that this steel has the required composition with regard to its carbon, phosphorus, manganese and special elements contents and that it has been brought to its normal temperature of casting.
On the one hand, it makes it possible to avoid the deoxidation operation in an oven, which is always long and expensive, on the other hand to practically eliminate the costly operations of scrapping and de-peeling ingots, and this at the cost.

relatively low slag expenditure.
The apparatus for carrying out the method is substantially the same as that described in the main patent. However, provision should be made for the possibility of eliminating from the circuit such a proportion of slag required by the increase in its sulfur content following depuration of the metal and its replacement by an equivalent quantity of fresh slag.
EXAMPLE 1.-
The aim was to obtain a steel of composition: C: 0.115% - Si: 0.220% - Mn: 0.700% - Ni: 1.28% - Cr: 0.93%.
A steel having the desired contents of carbon, manganese, nickel and chromium was prepared for this in an electric furnace of 25 tons, and brought to casting temperature, but without subjecting it to a deoxidation operation. and desulphurization, this steel received at the end of the operation an addition of 0.5% silicon, then it was poured in a ladle. at the same time, a slag of the following composition was melted in another electric furnace:
CaO: 56% - Al2O3: 42% - SiO2: 2% that we have superheated to 1700. this slag thus overheated was quickly poured into each of the ingot molds (with a capacity of 2 tonnes), intended to receive the metal, which were filled completely. Immediately after this filling of each of the molds with the slag, the metal of the casting ladle was poured into it by means of a nozzle of 25 m / m in diameter.
The ingots thus obtained had a surface absolutely free from defects and did not require any de-peeling or debridement operation,
Their micrographic cleanliness was excellent, as has been shown by subsequent examinations carried out on rolled and turned bars obtained from these ingots where no inducement could be detected.

we can proceed. casting in ingots under slag with a -stal having already been partially desulphurized beforehand, either in the oven or by mixing in a ladle with slag, the operation of casting in ingot then having the effect of completing this preliminary purification while ensuring obtaining good surfaces and high micrographic cleanliness of the ingots. In the case of prior mixing in a ladle, the same slag as that used in the ingot mold can be used.
In this case, the subsequent casting in ingot molds filled with the same type of slag can lead to a very significant addition to the purification carried out in the ladle because of the much greater relative masses of slag involved,
