<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
1) réduire les cxydes dont le laitier s'est charge pendant la première opération de brassage ;
2) réduire une 'quantité de silice correspondant à la quantité de silicium que l'on désire incorporer à l'acier ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

"Process for the regeneration of slags; applicable to the formation of alloys"
The deoxidation operations of metals, especially steels, give, as a residue, slags loaded with oxides. These slags can be regenerated by reduction of the oxides which they contain to make them suitable for a new deoxidation operation.
The regeneration of such slags has already been attempted, but the regeneration methods used or proposed heretofore were long and expensive, involving high expenditure of energy, material and manpower. The regeneration of oxidized milk is, however, to be sought, from an economic point of view, in order to avoid losses of materials which are sometimes costly (magnesia, oxide ,,, titanium, etc.) and the loss of energy corresponding to the melting of the slag and its heating to the desired temperature.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
When the deoxidation operation is carried out almost instantaneously, according to a known process, according to which the steel and a very fluid deoxidation slag are violently stirred with each other so as to form a kind of emulsion, it is possible to is obliged, with the old processes of regeneration of slag to have several regeneration ovens and to have very large quantities of slag.
Now, in such a process - even more than for the an- processes, it would be advantageous for deoxidation - / that the same mass of slag, reduced to what is necessary for a deoxidation operation can be regenerated, it also almost instantaneously.
The object of the present invention is a process for regenerating slags which satisfies the conditions of economy and rapidity set out above. It consists mainly in purple stirring the deoxidation slag loaded with oxides and in the molten state, with a reducing agent in the finely divided solid state, or in the molten state, in order to emulsify, in a way, the reducing agent. in the state of fine division in the slag and in carrying out tumultuous agitation of this emulsion, for a short time but sufficient for the reduction of the oxides by the reducing agent to take place. All that remains is then to separate from the slag the metal resulting from the reduction of the oxides; the slag is ready for a new deoxidation operation.
The reducing agents used can be very diverse; it is possible to bring into play, for example, carbon, calcium carbide, aluminum, silicon, manganese, ferrotitanium, calcium, otc ..., or any combination or mixture ' of these different bodies. What matters above all is that the stirring and swirling between the slag and
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the agent: or the deoxidizing agents used are as violent as possible, so as to produce a very intimate contact between the slag and the deoxidizing agent.
Under these conditions, we ob-. holds an extremely rapid deoxidation of the slag, deoxidation which, in particular, does not require the addition of external heat,
A particularly simple means, but indicated without limitation, for carrying out the process according to the invention, consists in placing the reducing agent in a pouring bag or any other receptacle, after having optionally put- a small quantity of slag at the bottom of this' pocket, 'in order' to prevent the reducing agent or agents from sticking to the walls of the container, - then to pour violently on, these reducing agents the slag to be deoxidized, producing a real emulsion, in this slag.
It is also possible to pour the reducing agent into any container and at the same time pour the slag into it violently.
Another very advantageous means consists in operating with the aid of any metal and in particular steel which has just been deoxidized by the slag, in order to produce intimate contact between the slag and the reducing agent; this process can be carried out as follows:
a) if reducing agents are used which are not soluble in the steel, they are added to the slag or the metal by superimposing them in layers in a container of any type. A violent stirring of the slag is then produced and called metal , for example, by violently overturning the whole mass in a ladle or, if the receptacle itself is of suitable shape, imparting to the receptacle, by whatever mechanical means, a movement capable of producing violent stirring of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
metal and 'slag.
Under these conditions, as a result of the dividing and emulsifying effect, an effect which is produced both in the slag and in the deoxidizing agent, the metal establishes the desired intimate contact between these two elements and thus allows to achieve almost instantaneous deoxidation of the slag. Or again, the reducing agent is added to the slag and the slag, with its reducing agent, and the metal are simultaneously poured into a ladle, the withdrawing metal poured with a speed such that it produces the emulsion of the reducing agent in the. dairy.
If it is desired to involve reducing agents which are soluble in the metal or if the finished metal contains, directly after the operation of regeneration of the slag, certain alloying elements which are at the same time deoxidizers for the oxides contained in the slag. slag - such as silicon and aluminum, for example, or manganese, titanium, etc ..., we will add to the metal a larger quantity of these soluble reducing agents or these alloying elements, than glue corresponding to the content of silicon, aluminum, manganese or other metal that it is desired to have in the finished steel.
The excess is calculated so as to correspond practically to the quantities of oxide which it is desired to reduce in the slag. The addition of silicon, aluminum or titanium to the metal does not present the slightest drawback, due to the fact that, the steel having been strongly deoxidized by the initial violent stirring with the slag, this Addition does not produce any inclusion or anyway no important inclusion. The steel is then stirred violently with the slag as described above, and under these conditions it is found that the reduction of the slag takes place in an extremely short time, as desired.
The method which is the object of the present invention
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
not only to achieve the reduction of the oxides which / are accumulated in the slag, but also to introduce into the steel additional quantities of certain elements including the oxides; are contained in the slag.
In this case, the reducing agents added to the steel will be chosen so as to achieve this incorporation; for example, if it is desired to introduce silicon and manganese into the steel at the same time as the slag is regenerated, a siliceous slag is used to which is added, at the start or after the first stirring for the deoxidation of steel, of manganese oxide, and, after this violent stirring, a quantity of aluminum calculated so as to:
1) reduce the oxides which the slag took on during the first stirring operation;
2) reducing an amount of silica corresponding to the amount of silicon desired to be incorporated into the steel;
3) reduce a quantity of manganese oxide corresponding to. the amount of manganese that it is desired to introduce into the steel.
It is understood that the silica content of the equilibrium slag. and MnO is chosen by applying chemical equations do such that aluminum reduces silica and MnO at the same time in the desired proportions and not just one of. these sweet elements.
Under these conditions, after the second stirring of the aluminum-laden steel and the slag, the desired double result is obtained, namely the regeneration of the slag and the enrichment (by alloying) of the metal.
We can obviously introduce any body into steel. other than silicon and manganese, provided that an oxidized salt of the body to be incorporated is added to the slag.
Here is an exemplary embodiment of the process applied to the regeneration of a slag containing silica, alumina,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
do magnesia ot do lime, slag which, after oxidation contains 9.6% MnO, and 3.37% FeO. On 1,000 kg. Of this slag placed in a ladle, we have violently back, for example in a large jet and from a great height, about 15 tons of a steel containing 0.430% carbon, 1.975% silicon and 0.500% manganese, ready to pour, to which an excess of deoxidizer in the form of 0.100% aluminum has been added.
After the violent stirring of the mass, stirring due to the violence with which the metal is poured, it was found that the amount of Mno contained in the slag had fallen to 7.6% and that of Feo had fallen to 2% and that, at the same time, the quantity of manganese contained in the metal had risen to 0.590% The violent stirring, simple and extremely rapid, therefore had the effect of eliminating a total quantity of MnO and Feo equal to 3 , 3% which corresponds practically to an enrichment of the slag in these oxides, enrichment which is obtained by violently stirring the same quantity of slag with a load of 15 tonnes of oxidized mild steel, with a view to deoxidizing it.
As will be appreciated, the process according to the invention is well suited for many different applications. In the case where it is limited to the simple regeneration of the slag, one can operate as follows: instead of adding in the first place, to the oxidized steel ,. the quantity of reducing agents necessary for the reduction of the oxides which it contains in the state of dissolved oxides, which would have the serious inconvenience of giving rise to the formation of numerous inclusions inside the steel ut d 'consequently lead to a considerable reduction in the quality of the steel, the oxides are first removed from the steel by dissolving them by violent stirring with the slag.
The reduction
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The oxides are produced inside this slag by a second stirring with steel which has been previously deoxidized and to which the same reducing agents have been added without inconvenience, the steel having been previously de-oxidised. - barrasse of its dissolved oxides.
In a word ;, we manage to make practically the same reducing agent act, and in the same quantity, but we use slags serving in a way to temporarily transport the oxides to be reduced, so that this reduction takes place in the body of the slag and not in the body of the metal, in order to completely or at least reduce to a considerable extent the inclussions of alumina, silicates, titanates, etc ..., etc ... which would result from a reduction in the metal itself
Whatever process is used for the regeneration of the slag, the slag is loaded. oxide or oxides of the reducing agent (s) which have been used, unless that reducing agent is carbon.
It will therefore be advisable to use reducing agents constituted by bodies whose oxides are present in the initial composition of the slag, so as to alter the nature of the slag in question as little as possible,
As inevitable slag losses always occur during the various handling of this slag, it is sufficient in most cases, to compensate for these losses, to add a certain quantity of the elements of the slag other than the oxides of the agents. reducers used.
For example, if we use a slag containing silica, alumina, magnesia and lime, can advantageously be used as reducing agents silico-aluminum or silica-calcium, so that 'it suffices
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
of adding magnesia to the slag, to compensate for losses due to handling or other causes, while keeping the slag a practically constant composition.
We realize that the process, object of the invention, while being very particularly intended for the regeneration of slag for the deoxidation of steel by violent brazing of the latter with a slag dissolving the oxides dissolved in steel can also be used to regenerate, by reduction, all types of slag loaded with oxides.
In some cases, the reducing agent by means of which regeneration of the slag is obtained may be the metal of the bath itself, for example the iron of a steel bath used to cause the violent stirring of the slag and the reducing agent. . The process which is the subject of the invention can, moreover, be applied in a quite general manner to make iron alloys with slags or even with slags not originating from deoxidation operations, consequently with slags which can be acidic, neutral or even basic. In this case, too, it is possible to make iron alloys of all kinds by violently stirring the molten steel and molten slag containing the alloying elements in the form of their oxidized compounds.
In this case, it is not at all necessary to operate with steel and it is also possible to use cast iron baths.
In the manufacture of certain iron alloys such as iron and nickel alloys, iron and molybdenum alloys, iron and copper alloys, or in similar cases, it is even possible to operate without the presence of reducing agents in the iron bath. In such a case, the rea-
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
The practical implementation of the process takes place in the same way as that described above. One can, for example, obtain the violent stirring of the slag and the molten iron by violently pouring a strong current of for (steel or cast iron) into melting in a ladle at the bottom of which is the very fluid slag.
The formation of the alloy takes place in a very short time, for example for a load of 15 tons, the distribution of the slag in the iron, distribution which, to a certain point, causes the formation of an emulsion between molten iron and molten slag, going extremely far.
The manner of carrying out the stirring can here also be of any other desired kind, for example mechanical stirring. It is only necessary that one obtains as complete a distribution as possible of the slag in the metal.
As stated above, the slags used in this way of carrying out the invention can be basic, neutral or acidic. The most important slags that can be considered are slags containing silica; ot which may contain lime, alumina, ti- taniquo acid, magnesia-, alkali, etc .... Slags can also contain iron oxide or manganese oxide. oxidized compounds of constituent elements incorporated in slag in order to obtain the constituent elements of iron corrosponding alloys are, for example, nickel silicate, calcium molybdate, copper oxide, iron ore. chrom etc ...
In the case of the first three compounds the presence of reducing agents in the iron molten bath is not necessary, the iron itself acting as a reducing agent. - It is possible, however, to operate with iron baths containing reducing agents such as silicon, aluminum,
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
titanium, calcium silicide.;, etc ... The presence of these reducing agents in iron is necessary when treating chromium ore, in the form of an oxidized compound contained in the slag, for the manufacture of alloys of iron and chromium.
When working on iron baths containing reducing agents, it is advisable, in order to reduce the consumption of reducing agent, to use deodorized iron baths. It is particularly advantageous to use for this purpose steels which have been deoxidized by violent stirring with very fluid, non-reducing slags, capable of extracting the oxides dissolved in the iron.
Instead of cast iron or steel, iron alloys can also be used for carrying out the process according to the invention. These iron alloys may contain as constituent elements of the alloy, the constituent element which is present as oxidized compounds in the slag. However, these can also be other alloys.
The slags may also contain mixtures of oxidized compounds of different metals which it is desired to combine with iron in accordance with the invention. The iron alloys used can be produced in any suitable way.
It is advantageous to use iron alloys obtained by the process which forms the object of the present invention and to which it is desired to add, by subsequent treatment in accordance with the intention, the other constituent elements of the alloy.
