<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

process to increase production in steelworks.
In mainly soft molten baths, after the steel is poured into the ladle, slag linings are formed, which are very difficult to remove and require a great deal of work for this purpose. The ladles must be cooled by jets. of water, in order to be able to remove these slag deposits. The reclamation of the ladles is therefore time consuming and this decreases the production of the steel plant. The pouring ladles arrive in the cold state under the converter and it is necessary to bring the steel bath to be poured into this cold ladle, in a relatively hot state, to prevent the formation of steel wolves in the cold pockets; this also presents defects from a quality point of view.
The pocket masonry also suffers a lot from these continuous changes in temperature.
It has been found that all these defects can be avoided when, when the steel from the ladle is made to flow into the ladle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
From the furnace, for example a converter or a Martin furnace or an electric furnace, materials, slag or ores with a low melting point are added to the casting, and particularly rich in silica. Additions of up to 4 kg / tonne maximum are sufficient. When adding these materials, the pocket slag does not remain in the pocket after pouring by tilting the pocket, but completely flows out of it. The coating of the pocket generally shows a layer of glaze (vitreous) and remains completely clean. In such a condition of the ladle, no more cleaning is required after pouring.
The bag can, after placing the new plug, be reused immediately in the red heat state and receive the next load. It has been shown that such a favorable effect can be obtained very easily, when, as an additive material, a slag rich in silica and containing manganese is used, ie about 30-50% silica and 10-15; manganese, that is to say a slag resulting, for example, from the melting of spiegel cast iron in a cupola. By adding such a slag to the ladle, it has surprisingly been found that the manganese yield of the metallic manganese carrier, added in solid or fluid state, is markedly improved.
Whereas, when adding solid manganese metal carriers, even for a very careful working method, the manganese yield cannot exceed 60%, we have reached, by adding rich slag silica and containing manganese, a yield of 70-80% of the metal carrier of manganese added in the solid state.
Finally, he revealed himself. that the addition of charcoal or coke in the finely ground state, after casting the steel in the ladle, on the slag in the ladle, influences the slag passed into the ladle in the sense that the ladle, after casting, remains cleaner and the slag falls easily by tilting the pocket.
A particularly good effect is obtained when the addition material rich in silica and containing manganese is added during the casting of the steel from the melting furnace into the ladle, together with finely ground coal or coke, these matters being or m-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
changed or added separately. The proportion of carbon should then preferably comprise, depending on the case, approximately 1 / 10th of the silica carrier.
It has already been proposed to add, during the melting or the blowing or even to the finished steel, at the end of the melting, oxidized manganese carriers, instead of metallic additions, in the melting furnace, the converter, the Martin oven or the electric oven. The aim of all these proposals is- to reduce the manganese contained in the additive material to metal, in order to obtain a sufficiently high manganese content in the steel, it is necessary to add larger quantities of these manganese-containing materials, i.e. about 5-10 kg. per ton of crude steel and more. All these additives already proposed are not able to exert such a satisfactory influence on the condition of the ladle after casting.
Furthermore, in the known processes the additive material should be low in silica and as rich as possible in manganese, while for the process of the invention the additive material should be particularly rich in silica. . for a content of about 10 to 15% manganese.
All these known proposals therefore do not in any way relate to the process of the invention or even to any of its parts.
The example below will make the working method in accordance with the method of the invention clearly understood.
A bath of permanently blown Thomas steel is carefully freed of its slag, then 70% of the manganese metal carrier to be added in total is added to the converter. The remaining slag is then carefully thickened with lime. During the casting of the steel, the remaining 30% of the metallic manganese carrier is thrown at red temperature into the ladle.
Shortly before, during or after addition of the manganese carrier, the additive materials are added, eg, for example melting slag, 3 kg. per ton of steel. As the steel is poured out of the converter, the remaining thickened slag is carefully retained. The invention is not modified in any way. If the manganese carriers
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
metals are added in full, in solid or fluid state, to the converter or to the ladle.
what matters is that when the steel is poured out of the converter, the remainder of the slag is well retained in the converter until the addition of adducts rich in silica and containing manganese or coal dust and the metallic carrier of anganese. The addition of such materials can be applied with the same advantage to the products of Siemens-Martin ovens or electric ovens.
The advantages of the new process in accordance with the invention are as follows:
By the reduction of the time of ease in the state of the casting bags, the production of the steel plant is considerably increased; thus, in the factories of the Applicant, an increase of 20% has been obtained at present. Instead of producing 7 casts per hour, it was possible to achieve 9 casts per hour. Another important advantage, especially for Thomas steels, is that the metal baths can be kept cooler than usual; therefore, = The yield increases by about 0.5%. At the same time, the condition for the production of Thomas steel with siemens- @artin steel properties is significantly improved.
Finally, the masonry of the pocne holds much better.
