EMI0003.0027
Chrome <SEP> 68,00
<tb> Silicium <SEP> 1,60
<tb> Carbone <SEP> 0,12
Process for the production of iron and chromium alloys. The present invention relates to the manufacture of iron and chromium.aillages, such as for example ferrochrome, and the metal of the type commonly known as iron or internisable steel.
It is already known to subject raw molten ferro-chromium to oxidative blowing in order to obtain an alloy having a reduced content of impurities, such as carbon and silicon, which are liable to be eliminated by oxidation. . In this operation, the oxidation of the chromium occurs to a greater or lesser degree and the loss of the metal which occurs in this way can be considerable.
The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of iron and chromium alloys, by subjecting to an oxidizing blowing a crude base bath which comprises iron and chromium and which contains impurities capable of being removed by oxidation, characterized in that the bath subjected to the blowing still contains a protective element more oxidizable than chromium, so as to avoid a detrimental loss of chromium as a result of the oxidation of the impurities.
For example, we can add manga, nese to the raw blowing bath and we can. judiciously make this addition in the form of ferro-manganese or other suitable alloy loaded with manganese, making .this addition in an amount sufficient to minimize the oxidation of chromium during the subsequent blowing operation.
The element which is to protect the chromium may be introduced during the formation of the elements of the basic raw bath to be blown, for example by reducing a mixture of reducible compounds of chromium and iron, for example chromite, and of this protective element or other reducible compound thereof. For example, the reduction can be carried out in the presence of ferro-manganese or an oxidized manganese compound which is reducible, or a suitable alloy of manganese.
Silicon can be removed more suitably than carbon by oxidative blowing and, since there are many reducing agents based on silicon, for example ferro-silicon, with a low carbon content, this procedure provides a means of economically obtaining a purified low carbon product in a practical and simple manner.
The reduction with the reducing agent based on silicon can be carried out in the presence of the protective element of chromium, or one can use as reducing agent, silico-manganese; in this case, the reducing agent itself provides the required protective element.
The reduction of the chromium compound can be carried out in a bath of molten iron or steel which, in principle,
is free of carbon or contains such a content and is of such a constitution as to obtain a final alloy of chromium and internisable iron. It is also possible either to produce ferro-chromium from the start, which is then melted with the appropriate quantity of iron or steel and subjected to the bath obtained by oxidizing blowing, or to blow the molten ferrochrome alone before it. add, iron or steel.
Regardless of the manner of operation, the protective element can be introduced at any suitable stage prior to blowing, for example during preparation of the raw base bath as described.
The proportion of manganese as a protective element depends on the circumstances in which the operation is carried out, such as: metallic composition known as the raw base bath and proportions of oxidizable impurities therein. In the case of a basic raw bath of a metallic composition to give as final alloy and purified product, chromium-plated iron or internisable chromium-steel, that is to say a metal with a chromium content is between 9 and 16%, one can.
say that the minimum proportion of manganese to protect chromium is the amount represented by about two thirds of the proportion of impurities which can be totally oxidized and is not in principle less than 2 1/2% when these im purities are evaluated to be less than 3 '- / 2 ô.
The products constituting the basic crude bath can be shaped into briquettes which then heat to the temperature necessary to initiate or start the reaction. The heat released by the action of the silicon-based reducing agent allows the operation to take place with the minimum application of external heat. To facilitate the reaction, suitable fluxes such as lime and fluorspar can be used. The.
reduction with ferro-silicon is preferably carried out in the presence of a reagent, such as:, limestone, limestone or lime, which is suceptible to combine with the oxidized silicon and (to form it with it a dairy.
As the reducing agent, preferred is ferro-silicon having a <B>, </B> silicon content of 80 to 90%, since a more vigorous reaction takes place and a higher content product is obtained. metal or metals other than iron.
The process can be carried out in any suitable furnace in which the necessary high temperature can be reached, for example an electric furnace of the .Snyder "type or of the" Heroult "type. volume, an ordinary crucible furnace can be employed External heating can be applied in order to maintain the necessary high temperature throughout the reaction.
Similar considerations, with respect to the maintenance of the required high temperature, apply to blower operation.
Experience has shown that a mode which is generally suitable for carrying out the process is to melt the reducing agent based on silicon, for example ferro-silicon, with part of the charge of the reactant which forms a slag, such as limestone, either alone or in the presence of an iron or steel bath, and then add the, reducing filler to the melt, preferably in successive amounts, the.
metallurgical reantion being assisted by agitation of the bath while stirring -and by the addition of what remains of the slag-forming reagent, according to the bcaoins.
When is. calmed the boiling produile in the bath by the action of the reducing agent and provided due the protective element called chromium does not already have. been introduced during reduction, then this element is added. For example, one can add ferro-manganese to the bath and when all the. mass has been brought to the state of fusion, the alloy of iron and chromium which contains silicon and manganese is subjected to the oxidizing jet.
A means that suits well and. which is economical to send, # - to create an oxidizing blast, for example an air jet, in the molten metal, that is, to take a wrought iron pipe which is covered with refractory clay sleeves and which is joint. with refractory clay. This pipe can <I> be </I> brought into the oven to put it directly on the work of the latter.
Blowing can. be carried out with cold air or with pre-heated air which is subjected to the action of a forced draft or suction. In order to shorten the. period of blowing. Or to assist in any suitable phase of the process the oxidation of the impurities contained in the metal, the blowing can be advantageously established to entrain in the. a melt of chromite, either another oxidized and reducing compound of chromium, or a base such as lime, in a finely powdered state.
Example <I> I: </I> In an electric furnace of the "Sny- d @ er" type, we melted a key charge 24.494 kg of ferro-silicon dosing 83% silicon and 0.28% carbon key and to it were added, by successive charges, 1.10.614 kg of chromite dosing 52.8% -de sesquioxide -de: chromium as well as 16.329 kg key lime and 12.701 kg key fluorspar.
Testing of the metal upon completion of reduction gave:
EMI0003.0022
Chrome <SEP> 67.00
<tb> Silicon <SEP> 6.04
<tb> Carbon <SEP> 0.13 <SEP>% A. This initial metal, 1.587 kg of ferro-manganese were added: 0.15% carbon and 1.9% manganese were thus introduced into the bath .
We then passed into the. melt one, oxidizing spray for two minutes. We thus obtained a final alloy containing:
EMI0003.0027
Chrome <SEP> 68.00
<tb> Silicon <SEP> 1.60
<tb> Carbon <SEP> 0.12
<tb> .Manganese <SEP> 0.30 Example <I> II: </I> To a bath prepared by melting 203 kg of scrap or scrap steel with 27.216 kg of chromite, 28.576 kg of silico- manganese containing 55% man ganese and 25% silicon.
90.719 kg of chromite (52.8% of chromium sesquioxide) and 22.680 kg of ferro-silicon (87% of silicon) were introduced into it by successive charges, then adding a new one: charge-key < B> 90.719 </B> kg of chromium iron ore.
To assist the reaction, from time to time, as required, a value of 18.144 kg of lime and 12.701 kg of fluorspar were added to it.
The molten metal gave on analysis:
EMI0003.0041
Chrome <SEP> 12.81
<tb> Silicon <SEP> 8.63
<tb> Carbon <SEP> 0.20
<tb> Manganese <SEP> 5.83 The molten mass was then subjected to a cold air blower, and, before coloring, 1.814 kg ferro-mang.a.nèse key was added to the blown metal as well as 113 , 36 grams of aluminum minimum. The metal was poured out and emptied into the molds and it was observed during the test:
EMI0003.0044
Chrome <SEP> 13.59
<tb> Silicon <SEP> 0.23
<tb> Carbon <SEP> 0.1.2
<tb> Manganese <SEP> 0.90 The yield of internisable metal thus obtained was 168.675 kg.
The use of manganese -as a protective element has the effect of maintaining the thermal conditions necessary for satisfactorily oxidizing the impurities contained in the crude base bath having recourse to the blowing and it is of a nature to establish a fluid slag as well as preventing oxidation of the color.
