<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Une composition qui permet d'obtenir de bons résultats est par ex. la suivante; si 0 : 22%; C; 1,5%; FeO;2,5%; A12O3; 8%; MgO; 13%; CaO; 53%; une autre composition est la suivante: SiO2; 28%;
EMI4.1
G : 2,5%; pn0 : 1, 5J; g0 ! 8, f ; Ca.O ! 61,5%.

PROOEDE FOR THE PREPARATION OF HIGH QUALITY FERROUS ALLOYS
The invention relates to the manufacture of ferrous alloys and in particular of steel; its object is a process which makes it possible to obtain ferrous alloys having high characteristics and which, in its application to the manufacture of steel, makes it possible to obtain steels having the good properties of acid steels and in which the other characteristics are markedly improved, so that a set of properties is achieved which are specific in part of acid steels and in part of basic steels; in particular, high transverse properties are obtained, great ease of hot and cold processing, the absence of flakes and other defects.
This process uses the principle according to which, in order to act on the ferrous alloy, we act on the slag which covers the bath during melting and refining.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It is known that several operations of desulfurization, deoxidation etc. are carried out using slag of suitable composition and in these processes it is also intended to use molten synthetic slag, the latter always having the aim of ensuring or completing a refining which normally takes place in the furnace .
According to the invention, for the manufacture of the desired ferrous alloy, the alloy is formed by applying one of the known methods and when the molten metal is ready for casting, the composition of the slag is suddenly modified so as to. adding to the metal the properties inherent in the refining treatment carried out with a slag of the modified composition.
In this way, starting from an acidic steel, i.e. manufactured on acid hearth and which, as is known, has structural and technological peculiarities linked either to the degree of deoxidation or to the physical and chemical characteristics of the acid slag with which it is in contact during melting, or to inclusions that it contains (for example emulsified silica), it is possible, by replacing the acid slag with a basic slag, to make this steel act with appropriate amounts of purifiers and of calcium carbide and to obtain a steel which, in addition to the properties of acid steels, will possess still other favorable properties, for example the high transverse properties of basic steels.
In practice, since it is difficult to change the slag in the furnace, its replacement will be carried out in special pouring ladles or by pouring the metal into a ladle which already contains the slag of the new desired composition or in which the new one. slag is introduced at the same time as the metal, or alternatively by pouring the metal into a furnace which contains the new molten slag or in which said slag can be formed or made up quickly.
The first three methods of proceeding have the advantage of causing intimate contact between the bath and the slag, which is
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
are important, because the aim here is to rapidly change the conditions of equilibrium between steel and slag, avoiding prolonged action, lowering of temperature, etc.
For the manufacture of a steel according to this process, therefore, an acid steel can be prepared in the known manner up to the point where the steel is in equilibrium with its acid slag, at rest and deoxidized, and ready for casting; at this moment the steel is poured into a ladle or other container already containing a basic slag or else this casting is carried out at the same time as the introduction of the prepared and molten slag.
By proceeding in the manner indicated, an intimate contact of the acid steel with the basic slag is achieved and at the same time the advantage of the physical action of the slag which washes the steel and removes the particles of it. suspended inclusions, especially inclusions which have formed below an acidic slag and therefore separate with difficulty, e.g. this is the case with silica which is solid at the temperature of molten steel.
Due to the treatment indicated, the silica included in the steel will be deducted or transformed into a fusible compound and inclusions and impurities will be removed.
The slag to be used in the described treatment of steel, exerting a chemical and also physical action, may still be the same and come from other basic furnaces or may have been used previously for the refining of basic castings or may have been used previously. regenerated. The slag can also be prepared synthetically and have very different compositions depending on the requirements.
Thus it can be more or less basic and it is useful if it contains carbides, e.g. calcium and silicon; of 1 'it may contain carbon, silicon, aluminum as such or in the form of alloys, as well as ferro-manganese, ferro-titanium and other deoxidizers or scrubbers (zirconium, vanadium etc.) or manganese to l metallic state, or oxides or salts of the elements indicated.
The slag can finally also be composed of carbides, for
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ex. calcium, etc. trained in any appropriate manner.
A composition which enables good results to be obtained is e.g. the next one; if 0: 22%; VS; 1.5%; FeO, 2.5%; A12O3; 8%; MgO; 13%; CaO; 53%; another composition is as follows: SiO2; 28%;
EMI4.1
G: 2.5%; pn0: 1.5J; g0! 8, f; Ca.O! 61.5%.
The bases and acids indicated can also be replaced by other bases or acids in order to modify, together with the composition, meltability, fluidity etc. slag.
In the slag it is also possible to include other additions such as alloys of iron with metals which it is desired to introduce into the steel during the treatment described, in order to prevent oxidation and to ensure a rapid and homogeneous mixing with the whole mass of the steel, thus bringing into solution in the steel the compounds which are in equilibrium at the temperature which it possesses.
The process described is also applicable with great advantages to induction furnaces in which acidic steel to be refined can be melted and treated, during casting, with a basic slag, especially with using calcium carbide.
It is also applicable to Bessemer steel, the properties of which are greatly improved by treatment with basic slag. For this purpose, Bessemer steel can be subjected, barely blown, to the treatment described,
The process described applies to the treatment of ferroalloys and all steels, soft or hard, common and special; Since the process tends above all to improve the mechanical characteristics of acid steels and to supplement the refining of steels from crucible furnaces, induction furnaces or steels produced by the Bessemer process, it is especially suitable for high quality steels; however, it gives good results in all cases.
It should be noted in particular that this process completely avoids "flakes" and other similar defects in high quality steels.
