-gées ,de manière à ce que cette eau et son émergie latente,puis- -sent être disponibles pour remonter un bateau au bief supérieur avec un minimum de pertes ; que cette minime perte est limitée qu'elle reste constante, quelle que soit la hauteur entre les biefs ; que l'eau accumulée au niveau du bief inférieur lors d' une descente ,peut être tres économiquement pompée et rendue à l'écluse, si besoin en est ; que,la pompe peut être éventuellement utilisée pour alimenter le bief supérieur ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Locking a boat causes, both on descent and ascent, not only a significant loss of water, but also the dissipation of the potential energy of this water.
The present invention aims to remedy this state of affairs, and it is characterized by the fact that, during the descent of a boat towards the lower reach, the water and its potential energy are accumulated in state holding rooms.
- aged, so that this water and its latent emergy, can - - be available to raise a boat to the upper reach with a minimum of losses; that this minimal loss is limited that it remains constant, whatever the height between the reaches; that the water accumulated at the level of the lower reach during a descent can be very economically pumped and returned to the lock, if need be; that the pump can optionally be used to supply the upper reach;
that the maneuvers of the operating devices are automatically controlled
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
that the movable control cam of the maneuvers is integral with a floating device which accompanies the boat during its voyage in the lock, and that the displacement of this device further minimizes the loss of water, moreover recoverable at little expense, as stated above.
The description of the means used by the invention is given by way of non-binding example of its applications and the operating explanations are given, and will be clearly understood, with reference to the appended schematic drawings, including:
Figure 1 shows the arrangement of the lock with respect to the accumulators, the water slack in the upper reach, in order to lower a boat, not shown.
FIG. 2 shows the same arrangement, but with slack water at the lower reach, with a view to raising a boat to the upper reach.
FIG. 3 shows an accumulator element, provided with the operating valve, and with a vent.
Figure 4 shows a sectional view of a slide valve with automatic hydraulic locking.
FIG. 5 shows an automatic control device for opening the valves, during the ascent of a boat as well as during a descent.
Figure 6 shows a floating cradle, guided, provided with the control cam for opening the valves, the cam movable in height, to control the two maneuvers: the descent and the ascent of a boat.
Referring to the drawing of Figure 1, we see an upper reach B, with the water level at 0, a gate P, coupled with a valve VB, communicating with the lock E, a basin-accumulator - mulator A, communicating with the lock by a VA valve, a series of stepped accumulators from A 1 to A 8, each fitted with a valve, from V 1 to V 8, the: lower reach BI, communicate with
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
with lock E, by a door P 2, here closed, the level of the lower reach B 1, being slack at 10.
The drawing indicates that lock E is full of water, while the accumulators are empty, in order to lower a boat, not shown.
The operation is as follows: the door P, having been opened, the boat has passed into the lock chamber E, and the door P having been closed, the valve VA is opened, the water, by going there, lowering the level to 1. The valve VA is then closed, and the valve V 1 is opened, in order to allow the accumulator A 1, which is of a desired capacity to absorb water from the lock E, by lowering the level at 2.
Having closed the valve A 1, the valve V 2 is opened, to allow water to fill the accumulator A 2, the valve V 2 is closed again, and by successively opening and closing the valves until 'at the valve V8, accumulator A 8, we arrive at slack 10 with the lower reach BI. Gate P 2 can then be opened, and the boat, leaving lock E, can follow its route.
Conversely, to bring a boat up from the lower reach BI, to the upper reach B, the door P2 having been opened, the boat having entered the lock chamber E, the door P 2 having been closed, the door is opened. valve V 7, which allows ac- -cmulator A / 7be to return its water to lock E, setting level 9 there.
The valve V 7 having been closed, or opens the valve V 6: the accumulator A 6, empties in the lock E, and this valve - / having been closed /: ne V 6 / operations continue successively, until '' when the accumulator A is discharged into the lock E, the level has been established there at 2. The valve VA being closed, we then have the choice:
If the loss of water between levels 0 and 2 is allowed -sible, the valve VB is opened, and the water from the upper reach B, establishes the slack in the lock E. - However it will be very economical. -mique to raise the water contained in the accumulator A 8, by
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the Ppe pump, and to pour it into the lock: the slack will thus be reestablished, without any loss of water, and with a low expenditure of motive force, which is distributed over two operations - rations either, a descent and an ascent.
If we compare these results with the consumption of water and its potential energy, in an ordinary lock, we see that against a volume of water between levels 0 to 2, which had to be raised, it If we say that between levels 0 to 2, there is a quantity of water Q, we only need Q / 2, per operation, while by operating according to obsolete methods, we will have lost 5 x Q, in descent, plus 5 x Q in ascent, or 10 x Q,. instead of just one. faith s, as said above.
As the volume or the quantity of water sacrificed or to be reassembled remains constant, whatever the height between the reaches, it goes without saying that either the quantity of water is sacrificed or its rise to the upper reach , will require a motive force always minimal, but proportional to the height of ascent, allowing a very advantageous exploitation.
Also, since a loaded boat displaces the tonnage of water corresponding to its total weight, the greater this weight, the less water there will be to lift.
Figure 3 shows a schematic sectional view of an element of the stacked accumulator battery, ie A.l., provided with a van-. -ne V, and a vent 3 ', fitted out as a manhole to give access to it, for all useful checks and cleaning.
The vent-manhole E ', will open higher than the maximum level of the water put in reserve, so that it serves as an overflow.
This overflow will also be indicative, because if it happens to operate untimely, it will be a sign that there is a need to check. Draining the accumulator is very easy, by simply opening the valve serving the accumulator, the water emptying into the lock, and the man can work at ease.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
It can be seen that the valve V has been placed in the center and ceiling in the bottom of the accumulator A, so that the latter can be emptied more completely as possible, in a minimum of time.
The capacity of each of the accumulators is determined by the fact that, knowing that all the water contained in the lock E must be transferred to the accumulator battery, each of these must be able to receive the quantity of water corresponding to the difference of. level between two consecutive valves, and in proportion to the dimensions of the reelected and the quantity of water it contains, between these levels.
It goes without saying that the accumulators could be placed either around lock E, or otherwise 9 but always in staging, with as little communication as possible up to the lock, to facilitate % load and unload operations, and execute them in a minimum of time.
This is how we can easily carry out the work necessary to establish accumulators by adding to an existing lock $, that is most of the time, underground, without practically disturbing the operation of this lock, during the works
FIG. 4 gives a sectional view of the arrangement of a slide valve V, housed in the between floor and ceiling, between an accumulator A 1 and A 2, underlying.
The drawing shows the valve V, closed, either in its normal position at rest, the opening of the water passage being done only under an order given by the automatic control,
We see a port 10 which opens in the accumulator A 1, this port being closed by a piston 8, sliding in a cylinder 9, the bottom of which is connected by a channel 12, opening.
- singing in the water passage at 16, which communicates with the plunging take, in the lock, 11. The cylinder diameter is larger
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
.... that the diameter of the passage of water in 14.
The piston 8 is similarly stepped, having a face 15 of a larger diameter than that of the opposite face 13.
It can be seen that the piston 8 is placed relative to 14, as a valve (or a valve) sits on its seat, the valve - -ne is not only closed by closing the lumen 10 by the piston 8, but also like a flapper.
The piston 8 is provided with a rod 6, which passes through a guide 7, and is connected by a mechanical link 5, to the movements of a roller 2, suspended by a connecting rod 4 at a fixed point 3, the roller being pushed back to the right by a spring R. determines the piston 4 to close the valve.
This will open when the cam 1 pushes the roller 2 to the left, thus giving passage between the accumulator A $ and the lock chamber E, through the tube 11, which opens out below the level of the water, in order to avoid surface eddies.
All the valves which are under the level of the water in the lock E, undergo the pressure of this pressure water column which can be considerable, and which would tend 4 to push back the piston 8 towards the left, if it does not. 'was provided with two faces of different diameter: in fact, as this pressure is exerted at the same time, on the face 15 which is greater than the face 13 of the piston 8, the latter will undergo a greater thrust, towards its seat 14 than that which is exerted on its face 13 it is therefore hydraulically blocked, in closing, by the pressure itself automatically.
As the releases are only done, during a descent with a very low pressure, the water column being minimal; compared to the valve at this time, the opening of the valve will be done very easily, and as on the other hand, during an ascent the valve to be opened is out of the water, it will be the same.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Figure 5 shows a Bat boat, floating at level 2 in lock E, on a float cradle of which only one is represented F, which in a way forms an elevator shaft, and which accompanies the boat in the trips, in the lock, this float carrying the cam 1, movable from bottom to top and vice versa, and which is used to automatically control the opening of the valves V.
Level 2 has been reached because, as stated in figure 1, accumulator A, as well as accumulator A 1, have already filled, valve V 1 being already closed by cam 1, at the same time as it has opened the valve V 2, to fill the accumulator A 2, and that it has already started to attack the valve V 3 which opens, while waiting for operations to continue successively from top to bottom, and that the level in the lock, has come down to slack with the lower reach BI, the cam having acted on the valve V 8, of the lower accumulator A 8.
In the same FIG. 5, the reverse operation, or remon- -ter a boat B 2, from the lower reach B I, to the upper reach B,. is supposed to have started, level 8 having been reached in lock E, cam 1, which has been moved upwards, having acted successively on valves V 7, which is about to close, and valve V 6 which is fully open, preparing to attack the valve V 5, the corresponding accumulators having been emptied or emptying, or going to be emptied by raising the level of lock E, until level 2 is thus gradually reached: At this moment, we will choose, as it is said for figure 2, which way we will restore the slack to 0, to allow the recovered boat to continue its course.
The drawing indicates only the positions of the displa- -calbe cam (cam 1), with respect to the water level, a suitable manual control means which can be easily realized for this purpose, and it is realized .qu 'after an ascent, cam 1 raised, it will suffice to bring it down so that it can act on them. ....
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the control rollers for opening the valves, as previously indicated. Conversely, for the ascent, the cam 1 has been gradually raised so that it acts on the rollers controlling the opening of the valves above the water level, and thus allow the accumulators to empty therein, by raising the level in lock E.
The elevator can be stopped at any place by acting very simply on cam 1, in the desired direction, in the manner in which an electric or other elevator is immobilized by acting on the relays, or the appropriate command.
This advantage is advantageous in order to be able to carry out any maintenance or repair work that may be necessary.
Figure 6 shows the guidance of the float-cage-elevator, in the lock E, this guidance being given merely as an indication, as well as the drawings of the boat, of the float F carrying the movable cam 1, which has acted, is acting or will act on the rollers G, controlling the opening of the valves corresponding to the accumulators A, as previously described, as well as a section showing the position of the floating boat at the level of the float F
The top view shows a descent, while the

bottom view, and the corresponding section shows a lift, and the bottom view shows the sectional plan of the lock.
with guides for the float. @
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, we see that the door P 2 is adjusted against two shoulders, shown, it being understood that they surround the entire door so that the pressure of the water column ensures an autoclave closure, appropriate means being provided to operate the opening.
All in substance as described and explained with reference to the accompanying drawings.
