<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to apparatus intended for the combustion of coal and other fuels in relatively small pieces, for example of a size between five and thirty mm. and in particular fatty fuels, these devices being usable in particular for heating low power heat exchangers such as central heating boilers.
It is known that the use of the cheapest coals, mainly small-sized fatty coal, has always been limited, especially for domestic heating, because of the difficulties encountered in achieving regular, complete and rational combustion.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The obligation to ensure simultaneously the combustion of volatile matter and the regular progression of combustion within the often agglutinated mass of coal, is practically not currently achievable in the most widespread heaters designed for use of lean coals, anthracite or coke; on the other hand, the burners used in industry for the use of fatty charcoals cannot easily be suitable for low-power appliances because of the size of the installations.
The object of the invention is an improved apparatus of simple construction, not cumbersome, of very easy maintenance and operation, allowing the combustion of small caliber coals and mainly fatty or flaming coals and can be used in particular for heating low power heat exchangers, and in particular central heating boilers.
The apparatus according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises, 'in combination with a hearth which comprises a precombustion chamber with a fuel inlet port intended to distill and coke at least in part the fatty fuel and, to following this chamber, a zone provided with combustion air inlet openings to complete the burning of the fuel thus coked, a fuel supply device, formed of a hopper containing a reserve of fuel. fuel and a conveyor in communication, on the one hand, with this hopper and, on the other hand,
with said inlet port of the precombustion chamber to gradually pass the fuel from the hopper into said chamber and automatically advance the fuel as it is. coking of this chamber towards the end of combustion zone.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Thanks to the initial distillation and coking of the fatty fuel, the combustion of volatile matter is facilitated and this coal is prevented from agglutinating in the final combustion zone activated by the air inlets.
Experience has shown that this achieves perfect combustion of very fatty fuels containing up to 38% of distillable products.
Other characteristics will result from the description which follows.
In the appended drawing, given only by way of example: FIG. 1 is a vertical section taken along line 1-1 of Fig. 2 of an apparatus according to the invention. suitable in the bottom of a central heating boiler; - Fig. 2 is an elevational view of this apparatus and of the lower part of said boiler, - "Fig. 3 is a horizontal half-section of the boiler and a horizontal section of the apparatus taken on line 3-3 of the same. Fig. 1; - Fig. 4 is a vertical half-section on a larger scale of the upper part of the fuel conveyor.
In the description, the upstream-downstream direction will denote the direction of movement of the fuel from the feed hopper to the furnace.
According to the exemplary embodiment shown, the apparatus according to the invention is assumed to be fitted at the bottom of a central heating boiler A.
This apparatus comprises in combination a hearth B and a feed device formed of a conveyor C and a hopper D containing a reserve of solid fuel,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
for example greasy charcoal of small body, which the conveyor C gradually passes, from this hopper, to the hearth B,
This hearth B which, in the example shown is combined with the bottom of the boiler A, comprises a precombustion chamber I followed by an end of combustion II.
The precombustion chamber 1 is formed by the combination of: - the solid vertical side wall 16 (Fig. 3) of the boiler (or possibly an independent wall}, a hoop 2 made of refractory material forming the upstream face of the boiler. this chamber and forming an inlet orifice 3 widening from upstream to downstream, - from the solid lower portion, from a first lateral vertical wall 4 parallel to the wall 1 and solid portions of a second wall 5,
The wall 4 is, in fact, solid in its lower portion, while thanks to slots 6 it forms a first grid in its upper portion.
As for the wall 5, which extends between the walls 1 and 4, it comprises from a to b (Fig. 1) a first solid lower horizontal portion, followed by a second intermediate portion bc also solid which is included. - chit upwards and a third upper portion cd provided with slots 7 and forming a second grid.

vertical wall 4 on the side opposite to chamber I such that this final combustion zone II projects laterally above this grate 8 with respect to the precombustion chamber I.
This third grid 8 is, as known per se, mounted to oscillate and keyed on a horizontal axis 9 so that this grid 8 can be shaken from the outside using a removable lever engaged on the end. square of the axis 9, this end being accessible through an opening formed in a plate 10 and normally closed by an oscillating flap 11 (FIG. 2).
The conveyor C has a slide or passage 12 of U-shaped cross section. This slide is rigidly fixed by its downstream end and for example using angles 13 welded or bolted to the aforesaid plate 10 which is attached, using bolts 14 and nut 15, against a frame 16 intended for it. - even to be attached to the boiler or other assembly to which the device is associated. The slide 18 is further supported towards its upstream end by two support feet 17 intended to rest on the ground.
This slide is extended downstream, beyond the plate 1a, inside the hearth B, by its two lateral flanges and especially by an extension 18 of its bottom.
Inside the corridor formed by the slide is movable an ooulisseur 19 which moves there with gentle friction. This slide 19, which itself has a U-shaped cross section, comprises, at its downstream end, a first upstream push-button 20, fixed on it by points: welding or otherwise. A rigid flat iron 21 which projects the slide to which it is integral also carries to its
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
end a second downstream pusher 22. The soft pushers 20 and 22 have a vertical downstream face and an oblique face, so that each of them has a wedge shape.
Above each lateral longitudinal wing of the slide 19 is fixed to the internal face of the lateral flange of the fixed slide 12, by welding or by bolts and nuts, a flat iron 23 of thickness preferably slightly greater than the thickness of the wings of the slide to complete the guiding of this slide in the slide and also form joint covers between the side walls of the slide and of the slide. An adjusted transverse plate 24, also fixed in the slide 12 for example by screws screwed into tapped holes in the thickness of this plate closes the acnt end of the slide 12 while allowing, thanks to two notches 25, the free movement of the slide 19 in this slide 12.
The thin-sheet hopper D comprises a portion 26, flared upwards and forming a container, and a lower portion 27 which forms an outlet orifice and is fitted inside the slide 12 above the flat bars 23 and against the plate 24. The hopper is held in the slide 12, for example by bolts and ecroa3 not shown.
It opens into this slide through its bottom which is open and located very substantially at the level of the upper faces of the irons 23, that is to say above the wings of the slide 19 and therefore at a height above the bottom of the upper slide 19 on @ @ equal to the greatest thickness of combat coucha @ ti @ e to be transported by the conveyor C and, for the thickness of the fuel actually entrained @ slide, an adjustable register 23 is provided, @

centers the lower part of the downstream face of the hopper D against which it is held for example by a bolt and a wing nut 30,
the bolt passing through a vertical slot 31 made in the register 28. The latter has a width slightly less than the internal width of the slider 19 so that it can engage without friction between the two wings of this one.
Between the hopper D and the plate 10, the upper part of the slide 12 is closed by a cover 32, for example welded to this slide and to said plate or simply held by éorous and bolts. In this cover 32 is formed an opening 33 (Fig.1, 4) closed by a flap 35 oscillating about an axis 36 on the cover. A small screw 37 is used to adjust the opening of this shutter.
In the bottom of the slide 12 is formed an opening 38 (Fig.l) which allows the passage of two tabs 39 welded under the slide 19. These two tabs form a pierced yoke for the passage.

The latter is connected by a calibrated safety pin 44 to the shaft 45 of a geared motor unit 46 which is fixed on a base 47, the motor 48 of which can be connected to an electrical distribution sector by closing a hand switch 49.
Another switch in series 50 makes it possible to adjust the periods of operation of the geared motor unit 46 by any one of the regulation devices 51 usually used in heating by hearth-burner (thermostat placed at the

The operation is as follows: the hopper D being filled with calibrated fuel, the electric motor 48 is started by closing the start switch 49, the automatic switch 50 being normally closed. Using the wing nut 30 and the bolt 29 along which the vertical slot 31 slides, the position of the register 28 is adjusted so that, the circulation regime of the coal being well established, the passage formed by the slide 12 does not fill completely. The back-and-forth movement of the slide 19 drives the grains of coal downstream by friction beyond this register 28 against which they tend to accumulate during the return movement of the slide upstream.
The pusher 20, thanks to the gentle slope of its upstream face, produces a shoveling movement in the carbon thus accumulated against the register on each return to the right (Fig. 1) of the slide and ultimately ensures its advance towards the bottom. focus B.
The adjusted transverse plate 84 opposes any exit of the coal by the upstream end of the passage and the flat bars 23 constitute, as already specified, joint covers above the wings of the slide 19 to prevent the fine particles of the coal. to be introduced between the slide 12 and this slide.

The volatile materials which are released burn in zones I and II within the more or less coked mass which continues and completes its combustion on the grids.
The flow rate of the coal is regulated, on all or nothing, by the adjustment of the regulating device 51 which acts on the switch 50 of the power supply circuit of the motor 48 so that the coked fuel burning on the grids in zone II of the hearth always covers them largely, constituting a layer which may be all the thicker the larger the particle size of the coke obtained.

The apparatus according to the invention has many advantages: it is very simple to manufacture comprising only a minimum of machined parts; - it can be adapted on small heat exchangers and in particular on the very widespread central heating boilers for the use of fatty or flaming coals of small calibres at a price much lower than the lean coals of medium caliber commonly used ; - moreover the method of driving the. coal under the hopper D and in a partially filled passage 12 eliminates the risk of jamming by accidental introduction of foreign bodies into the hopper D, or of jamming of the coal against the walls of the passage 12 and offers the possibility of use very friable coals;
- furthermore, the fractional combustion in relatively thin and frequently worked layers in the coking chamber I than on the grills p @ acé @ downstream of it allows @@@ to read the natural draft;

risks of stopping combustion, frequent accidents with lean coals and close loads make combustion adjustments much easier.
Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments shown and described which have been chosen only by way of example.
In particular, it is possible to lengthen the transport corridor 1a by increasing the number of pushers integral with the slide when it is not possible to bring the storage hopper D sufficiently close to the hearth B.
The electric motor 48 can also be replaced by a hydraulic motor, supplied by the distribution network or by a boiler drain in the case of a high pressure installation, directly attacking the boiler.
