<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

MULTI-CURRENT SOCKET.
Main Patent No. 525,360, applied for on December 28, 1953, relates to a multi-current socket, more especially an electrical socket for connecting an apparatus comprising two resistors to two supply circuits of different voltages.
Devices are known, in particular electrical coupling, making it possible to mount in series and in parallel two resistors to adapt the device which comprises them to two electric currents, the voltage of one of which is double, or substantially double, of the voltage on the other.
In some of these devices, the series or parallel connection of the resistors is obtained at will by the relative rotation of three interlocking contact elements.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The object of the invention is a current socket plug, of adjustable and safe operation, making it possible to removably connect, in series and in parallel, two resistors of an apparatus to two electrical circuits of. supply of different voltages.
The socket-outlet according to the invention comprises, in a casing essentially formed of two juxtaposed and removable parts, three pins and three contact sockets. The pins are able to fit at will in the three sockets or in two of them, the pins being connected to the supply circuit, two to one pole and the third to the other blade, two sockets making a contact direct with one of the resistors, and one of them as well as the third putting in circuit the second resistor, to the intervention of a cable with two conductors terminating in an ordinary female plug.
The socket-outlet according to the invention is, moreover, of a design such that any unintentional modification of its setting is impossible and that the voltage of the current for which it is set can be read on the casing.
Other details and particularities of the invention will emerge more clearly from a non-limiting example of an embodiment of a socket in accordance with the latter and the description of which is given below with reference to to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevational view of the socket;

Figure 5 is a view similar to that of Fig.3 of a socket holder corresponding to the pin holder of Fig.4;
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
FIG. 6 is a side view of the socket holder of FIG. 5;
Figure 7 is a side view of the spindle holder of Figure 4;
FIG. 8 is an elevational view of the spindle holder of FIG. 4;
FIG. 9 is a diagram of the connections of the socket holder of FIG. 6;
FIG. 10 is a diagram of the connections to the power supply circuit of the spindle holder of FIG. 7 in its position relative to the socket holder of FIG. 9, for a current of 110 volts, for example;
FIG. 11 is a diagram combining FIGS. 9 and 10 and showing the relative mounting of the pin holder and the socket holder for parallel connection of the resistors;
FIG. 12 is a diagram similar to that of FIG.
10, showing the position of the spindle holder, such as that of FIG. 8, with respect to the socket holder of FIG. 9 for a current of 220 volts, for example; and FIG. 13 is a diagram similar to that of FIG.
11 and combining figs. 9 and 12 for a series connection of the resistors.
Considered according to its general external appearance (fig. 1), the power plug with combined and adjustable connections essentially comprises a cylindrical envelope or substantially such, formed by the removable union, transversely to its longitudinal axis, of a housing 1 and a cap 2 (fig. 1 and 2). At its free end, the shoemaker 1 passes through a female plug 3 for a corresponding male element connected to a resistor 4 (fig. 9, 11 and 13) of an electrical appliance, for example, a waffle iron, provided, in addition, a second resistor 5 removably connected by a socket plug, not shown, to a cable 6 containing two conductors 7 and 8 and leaving the box 1 via a short tubing 9.
The free end of the cap 2 is frustoconical and provides passage to a cable 10 composed of two conductors 11 and 12 and connected to the circuit
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
electrical distribution. The cables 10 and 9, respectively input and output of the current, are protected by a metal coil not shown in the drawings.
The electrical connection between the cables 9, 10 and the female plug 3 is made by a system consisting essentially of three pins 13, 14 and 15 and three sockets 16, 17 and 18 (fig. 4 and 5).
The pins 13, 14 and 15 are mounted on one side of a disc or spindle holder 19 and arranged at equal distance from a central point to the disc 19 and on two perpendiculars passing through said point (fig. . 7). The pins 13 and 15 are interconnected by a metal strip 20 to thus form an electric pole, the other pole being materialized by the pin 14. From the face of the disc 19 opposite the pins 13, 14 and 15 are secured two terminals 13 'and 14' (fig. 4) constituting the ends of the respective pins 13 and 14 to be connected to the conductors 11 and 12 of the cable 10 which, on the other hand, are held by a support 21 integral with the pin holder 19 and forming a jaw with a removable plate 22 which is fixed thereto by a clamping screw 23 (FIG. 8).
The spindle holder 19 is housed in the cap 2, freely with respect to the latter and is not visible from the outside (fig. 1). At its circular periphery, the pin holder 19 (Figs. 4 and 8) has the mention of two numbers, for example, 110 and 220, corresponding to the numbers of volts of two electric currents.
Depending on how pins 13,14 and 15 are engaged with sockets 16,17 and 18, one of the volts will appear in a window 24 in cap 2.
The sockets 16, 17 and 18 are integral with a disk or socket holder 25 and arranged on the latter in a manner corresponding to that of the pins 13, 14 and 15 on the spindle holder 19. On the other hand, the socket holder 25 has a hole 26 for housing the pin 13, during the series connection. On the face of the socket holder 25 directed towards the female plug 3, the socket 18 is integral with a terminal 18 'and the sockets 16
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
and 17 'extend to form, in the socket 3, two contact sockets 16' and 17 '. The socket 17 is made so as to also constitute a terminal 17 "for one of the conductors, for example the conductor 8, of the cable 6 connected to the resistor 5, the other conductor 7 being fixed to the terminal 18 'of the cable. socket 18.
Hole 26 has no connection terminal
The female plug 3 and the socket holder 25, with the interposition of the housing 1, are secured by means of a screw 27 (fig. 2) passing through a central longitudinal recess of the female plug 3 and being fixed in an axial thread. a central extension 28 of the socket holder 25. The latter has at its periphery a thread 29 corresponding to an internal thread, not visible in the drawings, of the internal edge of the cap 2.
When, on the one hand, the female plug 3, the casing 1 and the socket holder 25 are brought together by reciprocal interlocking and held together by the screw 27, and when, on the other hand, the cap 2 is screwed onto the thread 29 of the socket holder 25, the pins 13, 14 and 15 being inserted in the three sockets 16, 17 and 18, or in two of them and in the hole 26, the socket outlet following the invention has the external appearance shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the spindle holder 19 not being visible.
In the diagram of fig. 11, which is the combination of fig. 9 and 10 showing respectively the connections of the socket holder 25 and the pin holder 19, it can be seen that the pins 13, 14 and 15 are housed respectively in the sockets 16, 17 and 18 for a parallel connection of the resistors 4 and 5, corresponding to a supply current of 110 volts, the indication of which is visible in window 24 (Figs. 10 and 11).
To adjust the socket-outlet according to the invention taking into account a supply current of 220 volts, that is to say to perform a series connection of the resistors 4 and 5, it suffices to unscrew the cap 2 and rotate the spindle holder 19 by a quarter turn, being in the position shown in fig. 10 and 4, compared
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
to the socket holder 25 of fig. 9 and 5, so that it ultimately occupies a position corresponding to that of FIG. 12. After joining the spindle holders 19 (fig. 12) and socket holders 25 (fig. 9), the pins 15 and 14 are inserted respectively into the sockets 16 and 18, and the pin 13 is housed in the hole 26 without connection, the socket 17 remaining free (fig. 13).
After replacing the cap 2, the indication of the accepted voltage, i.e. 220 volts, appears in window 24.
To switch from a series connection (fig. 13), corresponding to a current of 220 volts, to a parallel connection (fig. 11), corresponding to a current of 110 volts, we proceed by an inverse operation of that described above, the spindle holder 19 being pivoted by a quarter of a turn, from the position shown in FIGS. 12 and 8 to that indicated by fig. 10 and 4.
It is obvious that the use of the socket outlet according to the invention is not limited to currents of 110 and 220 volts, and that a device provided with two resistances provided, in a parallel connection , for a current of a given voltage is, with the intervention of the plug in question, easily transformable for a current of double voltage.
It is also obvious that the invention is not limited to the embodiment described above and that many modifications of detail could be made to it without going beyond its scope. Thus, for example, the sockets 16, 17 and the terminal 18 could be extended by pins on a fixed support to correspond to three sockets and a blind hole that would include a second pivoting support.
