<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The subject of the present invention is a ring with high insulation and high mechanical strength, intended in particular for electrical constructions, the characteristic of which consists in that it consists of at least one glass wire which encircles the ring several times. 'ring, the various turns and the various wires (if any) being joined by a plastic material. The ring shape adopted presents, as we know, over the other shapes that can be given to parts intended to withstand great mechanical stresses, enormous advantages, the other shapes not allowing anchoring as well. resistant than the ring shape.
Preferably, a single uninterrupted glass yarn will be used, forming the entire ring, this yarn possibly being made of twisted fibers, or, better still, of a drawn yarn.
The technical advantage obtained is clear: we know that the glass threads have, by themselves, a very considerable resistance to extension, on the other hand, the tensile forces exerted on the ring in a direction substantially parallel to the wires will be distributed over the various turns, just as, on a block, the resistance to be overcome in order to lift a load is all the lower the greater the number of loops joining the pulleys.
The present invention also relates to a process for the manufacture of these rings which consists in passing a glass strand in a still liquid plastic material and in winding it preferably with an initial tension, a large number of times over a length of time. suitable mandrel, before hardening, natural or artificial, of the plastic material.
A large number of plastics, and in particular of thermosetting plastics, can be used for making the rings according to the present invention.
The rings preferably have an elongated shape with two substantially rectilinear internal sides connected at the ends by two substantially circular curves. The present invention also relates to the metallic reinforcement and connection devices used at the ends of the ring.
According to the invention, each of the devices comprises, on the one hand, a cylinder having a diameter equal to that of the semicircular part to be reinforced, a length equal to the thickness of the ring and a rim offset in inside with respect to the periphery of the cylinder and protruding above and below the ring, and, on the other hand, a yoke formed from a single piece of folded flat metal which overlaps the end of the ring and offers circular openings engaging on the internal edges of the cylinder, said yoke also having tabs which fold back inside the ring at the angles between the rectilinear interior side of this ring and the periphery of the cylinder , so as to prevent the rotation of the yoke and, consequently, of the cylinder which would have the effect of wearing out the ring.
An embodiment of a ring according to the present invention will be described below and is shown by way of example in the appended drawing in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the ring,
Figure 2 shows in perspective the half-folded yoke,
Figure 3 shows this screed in plan,
Figure 4 shows it in partial engagement with the reinforcement cylinder,
Figure 5 shows in elevation the cylinder placed in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
one end of the ring, and fig. 6 is a figure similar to FIG. 5 but with the yoke folded over the cylinder.
The ring 3 is formed from at least a glass thread 2 which goes around the ring several times. There may be a single wire or several wires, the maximum resistance being obtained with a single wire which constitutes a series of layers, the various turns of this wire being joined by a plastic material, the wire can be a twisted wire or , preferably, a yarn obtained by spinning.
To manufacture the ring, the thread or threads are preferably passed through a bath of plastic material in the liquid state. Then, the wire is wound, preferably with an initial tension, on a mandrel having the shape of the inside of the ring, this mandrel having lateral cheeks. The material retained by the threads penetrates all the intersections between the turns and the layers and forms a smooth surface. The solidification of the plastic material takes place naturally or by the action of heat in the case of thermosetting resins.
Rings are thus obtained having remarkable qualities of isolation and mechanical strength. For example, they can, without being deformed, undergo tensile forces of the order of several tons; they are also resistant to humidity, ultraviolet rays, ozone, heat, chemical agents, etc.
By way of example only, it is possible to use, as plastics, araldite, polyesters, vinyl chlorides, synthetic mica, etc., whether or not combined with resins or surface varnishes.
In the elongated rings which internally have substantially rectilinear sides connected by semicircles, as has been shown in FIG. 1, reinforcing devices are placed in the ends of the ring intended to maintain the shape of the ring 3, and to serve for connecting the ring to any parts.
Each of these devices comprises, on the one hand, a cylinder 4 having a length which corresponds substantially to the thickness of the ring 3 and having an internal projecting rim 3 which projects on either side of the ring. . The device comprises, on the other hand, a yoke consisting of a metal plate 6 pierced with two orifices 7 (see in particular FIG. 3) having a diameter equal to the outer diameter of the rim 5, and provided with four tabs 8 perpendicular to the plane of the plate 6. The plate 6, which may have a cutout 9, is folded over, so as to form a cover which, in FIGS. 2 and 4 is shown as half closed.
First, the cylinder 4 is placed in the end of the ring 3 (Fig. 5). Place the yoke 6 on the ring and close it so that the holes 7 engage on the rim 5 and the tabs 8 - (Fig. 6) enter the angle formed by the internal side of ring and cylinder 4, after which the flange 5 is crimped on the yoke. Under these conditions, any rotation of the yoke and, consequently, any rotation of cylinder 4, with respect to ring 3, is prohibited.
Optionally, instead of glass strands, glass fibers could be used which, however, due to their longitudinal discontinuity, give rings of lower mechanical strength.
In order to respond to certain particular cases of rings subjected to very high electrical voltages in slightly conducting atmospheres (for example in the case of rain), it has been planned to increase
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the isolation of the resistance to breakdown (short-circuiting) of the rings according to the present invention as indicated in FIG. 7 which is an elevation view. The substantially rectilinear parts of the ring 3 have been provided with insulating discs 11 which are preferably of the same composition as that of the ring, and which are preferably also offset from each other. others from one side to the other of the ring; these discs make it possible to lengthen the creepage lines and make the insulation better even in a highly humidified environment.
To carry out this assembly conveniently, it is practical to form each disc 11 of two halves 11A, 11B shown in profile in FIG. 9 and in plan in FIG. 8. Each of these half-discs offers a notch 12 having a width a little greater than that of the sides of the ring and a greater depth. The half-disc further has a boss 13 A, 13 B, so that when two half-discs 11 A, 11B are put in place, they together form a complete disc 11 enclosing a branch of the ring. Their retention by the ring is obtained by applying, to the appropriate parts of the half-discs before they are placed on the ring, a suitable insulating adhesive.
