<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The invention relates to light vehicles of which at least one wheel is driven by at least one driving roller rotating in contact with the tire of said wheel; and it concerns more particularly, because it is in their case that its application seems to be of the greatest interest, but not exclusively among these vehicles, bicycles with an auxiliary motor and more particularly still those with a front drive wheel. , whose engine is supported by the front fork.
Its main aim is to make these vehicles such as they respond, better than hitherto, to the various requirements of practice.
It mainly consists in interposing, between a shaft input by the motor of the vehicle and that of the driving roller, a transmission comprising a belt connecting a driving pulley of variable diameter to a receiving pulley, a movable element carrying the receiving pulley and the roller, the different characteristics of this element as well as those of the receiving pulley and of the roller being such that the resultant of the reaction of the roller on the tire and of the traction of the tensioned end of the belt tends to increase the center distance between the two pulleys by displacement of the aforesaid element against the action of a return device constituted, at least in part, by an elastic system which itself tends to increase the diameter of the driving pulley.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions which can be used in isolation.
It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application as well as to certain embodiments of the aforementioned provisions, and it relates more particularly still, and this as new industrial products, to motor vehicles of the type in question comprising application of these same provisions as well as the special elements and tools specific to their establishment.
And it can, in any event, be clearly understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawings, which supplement and drawings are, of course, given above all by way of indication. .
Fig. 1 shows, - ,, schematically in elevation, 'the front part of a bicycle with an auxiliary motor constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figs. 2 and 3 finally show, on a larger scale, respectively in elevation and in plan cut away portions, the detail of the gear change mechanism of FIG. 1.
According to the invention, and more especially according to that of its modes of application, as well as according to those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which it seems that preference should be given, proposing, for example , to establish a bicycle with an auxiliary motor, the front driving wheel of which is driven by a roller 1 rotating in contact with the tire 2 of this wheel, said roller being moved by a motor 3 supported by the front fork 4 of the bicycle, one proceed as follows - or analogously.
As regards the vehicle, as a whole, with the exception of the transmission between the motor 3 and the roller 1, it is constituted by having recourse to any suitable embodiment.
As regards the transmission between the motor 3 and the roller 1, it is made to comprise, according to the invention, a belt 5 (fig.l) connecting a driving pulley 6 of variable diameter to a receiving pulley 7, a movable element carrying the receiving pulley 7 and the roller 1 the different characteristics of this element as well as those of the receiving pulley and of the roller being such that the result of the reaction of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
roller 1 on the tire 2 and traction of the taut end of the belt 5 tends to increase the center distance of the two pulleys 6 and 7 by displacement of the aforesaid element against the action of a return device constituted, at least by part, by an elastic system itself tending to increase the diameter of the pulley.
It can be seen that the dynamometric device thus formed can adapt, automatically and continuously to the resistive torque, the gear ratio between the motor and the driving wheel of the bicycle and that it allows the user to use his bicycle in all the circumstances, especially in high percentage hills, without having to exert muscular effort.
Although the assembly described has serious advantages, it is advantageous to complete it by an additional elastic system tending to move the mobile element carrying the receiving pulley 7 and the roller 1 in the direction causing the application of the roller on the roller. tire and further, preferably, to increase the center distance of the two pulleys 6 and 7.
For this purpose, recourse will advantageously be had to an embodiment such as shown in the figures.
According to this embodiment, the receiving pulley 7 and the drive roller 1, the latter having a smaller diameter than said receiving pulley, are carried by the same shaft 8 (figa2 and 3) journaled in a movable element 9, in sleeve shape for example, this sleeve 9 being mounted to oscillate around a transverse axis 10. This transverse axis 10 is carried by one of the ends of a bliellette 11, the other end of which can rotate around an axis fixed 12 carried by the fork 4 of the bicycle. The corresponding end of the pellet 11 is for example housed between two ears 13 integral with the socket 9, the axis 10 passing through said ears and the connecting rod 11.
Advantageously, the belt 5 is arranged in the form of a trapezoidal belt and the driving pulley 6 of variable diameter is formed by: two flanges. With frustoconical flanges movable axially with respect to one another. One of these flanges 14 can be fixed with respect to the coupling shaft 15 and the other flange 16 is then axially movable on said shaft so as to be able to move away from the other flange (which has the effect of to reduce the useful diameter of the driving pulley 6) against the action of an elastic system constituted for example by a spring 17 bearing on a shoulder 18 of the drive shaft 15, to prevent the flanges 14 and 16 from rotating one relative to the other, for example guide fingers 19 are provided.
The elastic system tending to apply the roller 1 to the tire 2 may consist of a spring 20 hooked, on the one hand, to the connecting rod. 11 and, on the other hand, at a point 21 of the front fork. It is clear that such a spring tends to increase the distance between the two pulleys 6 and 7 and that it keeps the belt 5 tight.
The receiving pulley 7 can: either have a variable diameter, which makes it possible in particular to maintain the alignment of the belt 5 with the driving and receiving pulleys without special precautions, or have an invariable diameter, in which case it is preferable to arrange the assembly so as to maintain the alignment of the belt 5 with the driving and receiving pulleys, whatever the movements of the movable flange of the driving pulley.
For this purpose the axis 10, around which the bush 9 which pivots
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
door 7, = axis 8 common to roller 1 and to receiving pulley 7, is preferably slightly inclined (in a plane substantially parallel to the plane tangent to the roller according to the generatrix of the latter situated in the middle of its zone contact with the tire) with respect to the axis 8 In this way, when the center distance of the two pulleys increases, the receiving pulley 7 moves, by translation along its axis of rotation, in a direction parallel to that which follows the fixed flange 14 and the couroi.
5 is thus always aligned with its two pulleys.
As a result, whatever the embodiment adopted, a light vehicle with automatic gear change is obtained, the operation of which is as follows:
If the resistive torque is low (flat ground or downhill), the forces transmitted by the belt are low, the effect of the spring 7 is preponderant and this spring applies the flanges 14 and 16 against each other. of belt 5 has a maximum value corresponding to the transmission ratio and, consequently, to the maximum speed of the vehicle (position in solid or dotted lines, figo2) o
If the resistive torque increases (rise), the roller, while rolling on the tire,
tends to move, doubting more in the direction 'which increases the center distance of the driving and receiving pulleys, while the receiving pulley 7 tends to move all the more in the opposite direction as the resistive torque is greater. as the tangential force on the roller is greater than the tangential force on the receiving pulley which is transmitted by the belt (and this in inverse ratio to their respective diameters), it is in the direction which increases the center distance of the driving and receiving pulleys that ultimately tends to move the assembly formed by the roller 1, the shaft 8,
the receiving pulley 7 and the sleeve 9 by increasing the belt tension. By a judicious choice of the various characteristics, and in particular those of the spring 17, one obtains that this increase in the tension of the belt causes the separation of the flanges 14 and 16 'by reducing the value of the winding of the belt on pulley 6 and bringing about a change in the favorable direction of the transmission ratio (position in phantom, fig.2).
If then, conversely, the resistive torque decreases, the value of the winding of the belt increases correspondingly.
In all cases, the transmission ratio is adjusted to its optimum value, without the intervention of the user, and this using a device that is both simple and light.
As goes without saying, and as it follows moreover from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application nor to those of embodiments of its various parts, having been more particularly envied, it embraces all the variants.
