<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Selon encore une autre particularité de l'invention, les nouveaux composés de formule générale I sont convertis en 3/5 : 17 Ó -dihydroxy-11;

IMPROVEMENTS IN THE PREPARATION OF NEW STEROID SUBSTANCES.
The present invention relates to the preparation of new steroid substances of general formula

which, as indicated in said patent application, possess unexpected utility for the introduction of a 17 Ó ¯ hydroxyl group in a pre-sterol.
EMI2.2
sensing the structure of 11-20-diketoallopregnan.
The new compounds of general formula I represent the next step in the development of the side chain of cortisone, starting from the compounds described in the aforementioned Belgian patent application.
The invention relates, as new compounds, to the compounds of general formula I given above, in which R1 and R2 have the meanings indicated above.
Preferred are those compounds wherein R 1 denotes an acyloxy group, for example acetoxy, propionyloxy or benzoyloxy. It is further preferred that R2 denotes an acyloxy group derived from an aliphatic acid containing from 2 to 5 carbon atoms.
To enable a better understanding of the invention, the following characteristics of one of the novel compounds are given as an aid.
EMI2.3
illustration: 3 /: Odiaceto 1720-epo 11-ketoallopresan,
Melting point: 161 - 1650 C Ó = + 15.8 (chloroform)
It is obvious that the preceding characteristics were determined for the purest sample of the new compounds which it was possible to obtain and that these characteristics are subject to variations, according to the purity of the product.
According to another feature of the invention, the novel compounds of formula I are prepared by reacting compounds of general formula II with an organic peracid in an inert organic solvent.
Examples of suitable peracids include the acids
EMI2.4
peracetic, performic, erbenzoic and monoperphthalic, among which the last named is preferred.
As inert solvents suitable for the process, mention may be made of chloroform, ether, acetic acid, dioxane or benzene used separately or as a mixture.
It is preferred to use from 1 to 10 molecular proportions of peracid per molecular proportion of sterol and it has been found, for example, that good results can be obtained by the use of two molecular proportions of monoperphthalic acid in solution at a concentration of 2, 8 N.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The reaction is advantageously carried out at temperatures between -20 and +60 C.
According to yet another feature of the invention, the new compounds of general formula I are converted into 3/5: 17 Ó -dihydroxy-11;
EMI3.1
20-diketoallobregnane9 by alkaline hydrolysis. This hydrolysis is advantageously carried out using an alcoholic alkali, for example by the use of sodium hydroxide in ethanol o
