<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Un mécanisme d'alimentation fonctionnant d'une manière intermittente et désigné dans son ensemble par le nombre de référence 24 (fig. 2), ce mé- canisme pouvant être d'un type approprié quelconque, débite à chaque cour- se une longueur prédéterminée de la bande métallique 23 à travers le passa- ge prévu dans le bloc de guidage 22 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
fixe 27 soumis à l'action d'unres ort et un levier 28 animé d'un mouvement alternatif, soumis également à l'action d'un ressort et monté sur un coulis- seau 29; celui-ci reçoit son mouvement alternatif du dispositif à came 25 comprenant une came 30 et une'biellette 31 articulée sur le bâti en 32, la biellette 31 portant un organe 33 de contact avec la came qui est soumis à l'action d'un ressort et peut se déplacer axialement;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Les trois poinçons 35, 15 et 37 se retirent ensuite pour reprendre leurs positions' initiales de la figo 3, le mécanisme d'alimentation 24 et le bloc de for- mage 36 étant revenus également à leurs positions initiales. La butée infé- rieure ainsi fixée est sensiblement contigue aux éléments de fermeture 5 mutuellement verrouillés d'un groupe d'éléments des bandes 2, les éléments de fermeture 5 de ce groupe formant avec la butée inférieure 8 une surface sensiblement continue dans la zône où ils dépassent les bords des rubans;
le doigt de butée 16 peut donc glisser sur cette surface quand on tire en- suite les bandes 2 à travers le dispositif. Quand, en tirant les bandes à travers la machine, on arrive à la fin du groupe en question d'éléments de fermeture 5 mutuellement verrouillée, le doigt de butée 16 quitte le dernier élément de fermeture 5 et se trouve poussé par le plongeur à ressort 17 vers les poingons 35, 15 et 37 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

DEVICE FOR FIXING THE STOPS TO THE STRIPS FOR THE MANUFACTURING
CURSOR CLOSURES.
The present invention relates to a device for fixing the stops to the strips of slide fasteners.
For a slide closure to function properly, it is generally necessary for each of its stops to have a predetermined position relative to the neighboring closure element. Difficulties have hitherto been encountered in correctly positioning the stops of the slide closures with respect to the closure elements, while carrying out the installation of these stops with sufficient speed; The object of the present invention is to provide a simple means making it possible to place the stops with sufficient precision on the strips of the sliders and to fix them to the strips with sufficient speed.
The present invention relates to a device intended to fix the stops on the strips of slide fasteners and comprising a channel for receiving a slide closure strip, a stop member which engages in contact with the end face of the slide fastener. the foremost closure element of the strip for placing this closure element in a predetermined position with respect to said channel, and means for cutting and forming a U-shaped stop in a metal strip and for crimping this stop on the strip in a predetermined position relative to the element. foremost closure.
By "end face" of a closure element is meant a surface thereof substantially perpendicular to the plane of the strip.
A means may be provided for automatically pulling the tape through the channel. ''
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The stop member of the device may consist of an elastic finger extending into the channel and at the place where the stop of the closure is to be crimped onto a strip. The arrangements being such that each stop, when has been crimped onto a strip, forces the elastic finger to disengage from the end face of the foremost closure member and therefore releases the latter. If such an elastic finger is used, it is then possible to replace, in accordance with a variant of the invention, the means for cutting and forming the stops by means which supply the crimping system one by one with the shaped stops. U trained beforehand.
If we want to fix the "lower" stops (this qualifier will be described a little later), the channel must have a width allowing it to receive two bands whose closing elements are mutually locked. The channel may be completely or partially covered by a guide plate, part of which has the desired shape to constitute an anvil against which the ends of the lower U-shaped stops are pressed and folded inwards by means of of a main punch animated by a back and forth movement relative to the anvil. The stop finger may be resilient along its length and extend through a hole in the anvil into the channel and toward the main punch.
The stop finger can be worn by a plunger subjected to the action of a spring, this spring pushing the plunger as well as the finger towards the main punch but allowing the finger to be pushed out of the channel, despite the action spring, when a lower stop is crimped on the pair of bands under the action of the main punch. A lever can be articulated on the plunger and include a cam abutting against a fixed surface cooperating with it, 'so that by operating the lever the plunger moves despite the action of the spring and pulls the stop finger in. outside the canal.
If it is desired to fix "upper" stops, this qualifier will be defined below), two fixed stop members can be provided in the device, one on each side of the crimping means and at different distances therefrom; so as to be able to crimp the upper stops on the bands in two different predetermined positions with respect to the foremost closure elements depending on whether, in each particular case, the foremost closure element abuts against the 'one or the other of the fixed stop members provided in the device.
To make the invention easier to understand, reference will now be made to the appended drawing, which is given by way of example, and in which:
Fig, 1 shows parts of a slide closure.
La'fig. 2 is a vertical section of part of a device according to the invention.
Figs. 3 to 6 show on a larger scale, part of the device of FIG. 2, the different parts being shown in different working positions.
Fig. 7 is a vertical section of part of a device according to the invention.
Fig.8 is a plan view of part of the device of fig. 7.
Figs. 9 to 11 each represent a section along the line IX-IX of FIG. 8, the different parts being represented in different working positions.
As is known, a slide closure (FIG. 1) comprises a slide 1 for closing and opening the closure, this slide being able to move on two bands designated by the reference number 2; each of these bands comprises a flexible tape 3 provided with a bead 4 which carries the closing elements 5 and a stop 6 or 7 (here called the upper stop) intended to prevent the slider 1 from leaving the bands 2 at the time of the closure., Most slide fasteners in current use
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
also take another stop 8 (here called lower stop) which prevents the cursor 1 from leaving the bands 2, when the closure is opened, and permanently connects the two bands 2 at one end of the closure.
The expressions "upper stop" and "lower stop" are used here to abbreviate the language, but they do not imply the fact that these stops are respectively and necessarily at the upper and lower ends of a slide fastener when one. considers a particular use case; it is obvious that the closure can be used in any desired position.
It can be seen from Fig. 1 that the lower closing element 5 is adjacent to the lower stop 8; if the lower stop 8 and the closing elements have the same thickness, as is usual, (the thickness being the dimension perpendicular to the common plane of the strips 1), the surfaces of the lower stop 8 and the element immediately adjacent closure 5 which are parallel to this plane are contiguous to each other.
On the contrary, the lower closing element 5 of each strip 2 must be moved away from the upper stop 6 or the upper stop "? ' of distances d1 or d2 respectively, the distance d2 being greater than the distance dl to allow the highest closing element 5 of the left strip 2 to enter the gap between the most top 5 of the right band and the stop 7 when the closure is fully closed In any case, the stops 6, 7 and 8 must be fixed to the tapes 3 in predetermined positions with respect to the closure element 5 on the more neighbor to obtain satisfactory operation of the closure.
It has been shown on the figs. 2 to 6 a particular embodiment of the invention, the device shown making it possible to fix lower stops 8 on a pair of strips 2, the closure elements 5 of which are interlocked. This device comprises a frame 10 carrying a head 11 provided with a pipe 12 along which the pair of bands 2 can be pulled by hand or mechanically; channel 12 is entirely or partially covered by a guide plate 13, part of which has been given the desired shape to constitute an anvil 14; the ends of a lower U-shaped stopper 8 are folded inwards when the stopper is pressed against the anvil by a main punch 15 reciprocating with respect to the anvil 14.
A stop finger 16 which can move along its length passes through an orifice provided in the anvil 14 and extends into the channel 12 and in the direction of the main punch 15. The stop finger 16 is carried by a plunger 17 subjected to the action of a spring 18; the spring 18 pushes the plunger 17 as well as the finger 16 towards the main punch 15, but the finger 16 can obviously be pushed out of the channel 12 by overcoming the action of the spring 18. A lever 19 is articulated on the plunger 17 and has a cam 20 which normally bears against a cooperating surface 21 of the fixed head 11 of the device '; this lever 19 makes it possible to move the plunger 17 by overcoming the action of the spring 18 so as to cause the stop finger 16 to come out of the channel.
A guide block 22 is provided for guiding, through a suitable passage and in the direction of the main punch 15, a strip of metal 23 fed by a supply apparatus not shown; the passage provided for the strip 23 is perpendicular to the channel 12 and is located approximately at the level of the end active surface of the main punch 15 when the latter is in its initial position (Figs 2, 3 and 4).
A feed mechanism operating intermittently and designated as a whole by the reference numeral 24 (Fig. 2), which mechanism may be of any suitable type, delivers at each stroke a predetermined length. metal strip 23 through the passage provided in guide block 22;
this feed mechanism 24 is actuated by a cam device 25 by a suitable drive system, for example, by an electric motor (not shown) rotating a pulley 26 which drives at its turn the device to cameo
The illustrated feed mechanism 24 includes a lever

fixed 27 subjected to the action of unres ort and a lever 28 driven by a reciprocating movement, also subjected to the action of a spring and mounted on a slide 29; the latter receives its reciprocating movement from the cam device 25 comprising a cam 30 and a link 31 articulated on the frame at 32, the link 31 carrying a member 33 for contact with the cam which is subjected to the action of a spring and can move axially;
the rod 31 is connected on the other hand at 34 to the slide 29 so as to be able to actuate the latter. It can be seen from FIG. 2, that the slider 29 completes a full back and forth stroke when the cam 30 makes one revolution. When the slide 29 moves to the right of FIG. 2, it drives with it the lever 28 which., Under the action of its spring, gets stuck against the metal strip 23 and drives the latter in its movement; on the contrary, when the slide 29 and the lever 28 move to the left, the lever 28 slides on the metal strip 23, the rearward movement of which is prevented by the fixed lever 27.
A cut-off punch 35 is provided between the main punch 15 and the end of the guide block 22; this punch 35 serves to cut a certain section of the metal strip 23 when the latter emerges from the guide block 22. A forming block 36 (Fig. 3) of rectangular section is initially located near the main punch 15, between it. ci and the free end of the stop finger 16; the interval included at this moment between the main punch 15 and the forming block 36 is just sufficient to pass the metal strip 23.
Another cam device, operable by the general drive system of the machine, is provided for moving the block 36 laterally, that is to say in a direction perpendicular to the plane of FIG. 3, and make it leave its initial position so as to clear the space between the main punch 15 and the stop finger 16. An auxiliary punch 37 is provided on the other side of the main punch 15 with respect to cutting punch 35.
The main punch. 15 the cutting punch 35 and the auxiliary punch 37 can be animated with reciprocating movements synchronized with respect to each other, moving away and approaching successively from the anvil, by means of another cam device 38 (Fig. 2) actuated by pulley 26 in synchronism with the other cam devices, pulley 26 being connected to the different cam devices by a single single stroke coupling 39, of any suitable model and controlled by a pedal, not shown.
During operation, the closing elements 5 of the two bands 2 are interlocked with each other. The bands 2 used preferably comprise tapes 3 of considerable length relative to that of the slide fasteners which it is desired to manufacture; each strip carries, in a known manner, groups of closure elements 5 and each of these groups has a length corresponding to that of a slider closure; each group of closure elements is separated from the neighboring group by a certain length of tape which does not carry any closure element.
The lever 19 of the plunger 17 is placed, as shown in figs. 2 to 5, so that the stop finger 16 penetrates into the channel 12. When the two bands 2 are threaded into the channel 12 through the entrance thereof (not shown), they can be moved along channel 12 until the foremost closing element 5 (the lowest element in fig. 1) abuts by its front end face against the stop finger 16 which passes through -In the interval between the beads 4 of the ribbons 3 in the sense that they do not carry a closure element. It is understood that the position of the two bands 2 relative to the punches 35; 15 and 37 in their initial positions shown in FIG. 3 is perfectly defined.
In these positions, the active end faces of the three punches are contiguous and are located in the same plane contiguous to a wall of the passage provided for the metal strip 23 in the guide block 22 (horizontal lower wall on the pin 3 ). When the foot control is actuated, the single-stroke clutch 39 couples the pulley, which continuously rotates under the action of the engine of the machine, with the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
various cam devices which complete a single revolution and then stop.
The feed mechanism 24 is first actuated by its cam device 25 and, as explained previously, causes to emerge, at the end of the passage provided in the guide block 22, a predetermined length of the metal strip 23; this portion of the strip 23 passes through the space between the forming block 36 and the main punch 15 and stops on the plane common to the three punches 35, 15 and 37 (FIG. 3).
The cutting punch 35 and the auxiliary punch 37, each arranged. side of the main punch 15, are then moved in turn by the cam device 38 in the direction of the stop finger 16 while the main punch 15 remains at rest. Thus, the cut-off punch 35, coo- Perant with an edge of the guide block 22, separates from the metal strip 23 the part of the latter which is on the punches 35, 15 and 37.
The cutting punch 35 and the auxiliary punch; 37, cooperating in their movement with the forming block 36 placed in front of the main punch 15 which remains at rest, force the section of the metal strip to bend around the forming block 36 and thus to take the U-shape which a lower stop 8 must have.
The forming block 36 is then moved laterally so as to leave free the space between the wings of the U-shaped stop 8 (fig. 4) and at the same time the space between the stop finger 16 and the main fist 15; this then starts and moves in a single block with the other two punches 35 and 37 towards the bands 2 and the stop finger 160 The two punches 35 and 37 clamp the bands of the slide fastener against a wall of channel 12 (the horizontal top wall in Fig. 5) and stop, while the main punch 15 continues to move.
The main punch pushes the wings of the U-shaped stop 8 through the ribbons of the bands 2, pushes back the stop finger 16 overcoming the action of the spring 18 and forces the ends of the lower stop 8, after they have entered the bands 2, to be folded over the bands and across the anvil 14, so that the ends of the stopper come to rest end to end on the face of the bands 2 which are found on the side of the anvil. 14. The stop finger 16 has therefore moved back under the action of the thrust exerted by the main punch and its free end is then stopped in contact with the lower stop 8 completed and fixed (FIG. 6).
The three punches 35, 15 and 37 then withdraw to their original positions of Fig. 3, the feed mechanism 24 and the forming block 36 having also returned to their initial positions. The lower stopper thus fixed is substantially contiguous with the mutually locked closure elements 5 of a group of elements of the bands 2, the closure elements 5 of this group forming with the lower stop 8 a substantially continuous surface in the area where they go beyond the edges of the ribbons;
the stop finger 16 can therefore slide on this surface when the strips 2 are then pulled through the device. When, by pulling the strips through the machine, one reaches the end of the group in question of mutually locked closing elements 5, the stop finger 16 leaves the last closing element 5 and is pushed by the spring plunger. 17 to fists 35, 15 and 37;
it then penetrates into the gap between the adjacent edges of the strips devoid of any closure element and opposes the movement of the strips 2 by abutting against the frontmost closure element 5 of the next group of closure elements mutually locked, the machine then being ready for a new operating cycle. If ... for some reason, it is exceptionally desired to release the bands 2 of the finger 16 abutting against an end face of an element closing, before a lower stop has been fixed, the lever 19 of the plunger 17 is actuated by hand so as to release the stop finger 16 from the channel and thus release the bands 2.
It will be appreciated that the stop finger 16 enables the lower stops 8 to be placed with sufficient precision and the machine to be operated at a considerable speed.

It is possible to make modifications and improvements to the device described. For example, the single source clutch 39 can be made manually operable by means of a handle. This clutch could also be actuated by a relay, the pedal or the control handle then being replaced by an electrical contact. According to a variant, the clutch relay can be actuated by an auxiliary relay, the current of which passes through an electrical circuit comprising the thrust finger and the closing elements of a group of elements; under its conditions, the operation of the device begins automatically when the stop finger 16 comes into contact with the end face of the closing element 5 which is the most forward of the group considered.
On the other hand, it is possible to provide means for modifying the predetermined length of metal strip emerging from the passage of the guide block, in order to meet different needs. Means can also be provided for automatically pulling the bands through the channel, the movement of the bands being mechanically interrupted by the stop finger coming into contact with a closing element, and the bands starting again afterwards. the fixing of a lower stop, when the punches start to withdraw. The entrance to the channel may be in the form of a slider closure slider so that the bands can be supplied separately to the channel and can interlock each other when passing through the entrance to it.
The device described can be modified to allow the fixing of upper stops 6 and 7 on the bands. Such a modified device is shown in FIGS. 7 to 11.
The device for fixing upper stops comprises a frame 110 carrying a head 111 provided with a channel 112 intended to receive a single strip'2, the bead and the closing elements of this strip being directed inwardly. of the device. Two fixed stop members 116 and 1161 are provided (fig. 8), one at each end of the channel 112.
The device also includes a main punch 115, a guide block 122 having a passage for a metal strip 123, a cut-off punch 135, a forming block 136 (figo 9), an auxiliary punch 137 and a mechanism for cutting. feed 124 for the metal strip 123, all these members being substantially identical to the corresponding members of the device shown in FIGS. 2 to 6. As in the first device described, the three punches 115, 135 and 137, cooperating with the guide block 122 and the forming block 136 ,. are used to cut a certain length of the metal strip 123 and to give the section thus obtained the shape of a U (figs. 9, 10 and 11).
The present device however differs from the previous device in that, as a result of the arrangement of the channel 112, the wings of the upper U-shaped stop 6 (figs. 9, 10 and 11) are parallel to the plane of the strip of the strip 2 As a result, the main punch 115 cannot crimp the stopper on the strip 2, but merely serves, in cooperation with the other two punches 135 and 137, to push the upper U-shaped stops 6 towards the end. band 2 (figso 10 and 11) and to place them correctly on the bead of the ribbon.
To crimp the upper stop 6 on the strip, two crimping members 150 are used which can move back and forth, approaching and moving away from each other, in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the tape of the strip 2 , so as to clamp the wings of the upper U-shaped stop 6 together and to crimp them firmly on the strip 2. The crimping members 150 move towards each other in synchronism with the three punches 115, 135 and 137 by means of a suitable cam device and are returned by springs 151 to their initial positions shown in FIG. 9.
If we go into more detail, we see that each crimping member 150 is integral with a finger 152 having an inclined end face 153 which cooperates with a thrust pin 154 provided with a face d. The corresponding inclined end 155, the thrust pins 154 being able to move towards and away from the fingers 152 under the action of the cam device 138.
When the inclined surfaces 153 and 155 of the fingers 152 'and the thrust pins 154 have come into contact with each other, the thrust pins continue to advance, the crimping members 150 are pushed together.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
towards the other despite the springs 151 so as to crimp the upper stop between them on the strip 2 (fig. 11). When = the thrust pins 154 move back, the springs 151 move the crimping members 150 away from each other.
We see in fig. 8 that the stopper members 116 and 1161 are located at different distances from the crimping members 150, the stopper member 116 being closer to the members 150 than the stopper member 1161.
When it is desired to fix an upper stop 6 at the distance d1 (fig. 1) from the adjacent closure element 5, the strip 2 is introduced into the channel 112 so that this closure element abuts against the member. stop 116 as shown in fig. 8. When, on the contrary, it is desired to fix an upper stop 7 at a greater distance d2 from the adjacent closing element 5, the strip is introduced through the other end of the channel. 112 so that said closing element 5 abuts against stopper 1161 which is at a greater distance from crimpers 150.
Thus., The device makes it possible to fix upper stops 6 and 7 located at different but predetermined distances from the adjacent closing element 5; it suffices for this to introduce the strip into the channel 112 by one or the other of its ends, which are preferably indicated by corresponding signs.
