<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
figure 1.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF FIBROUS PRODUCTS. This invention relates to a process and an improved apparatus intended for the manufacture of fibrous products and especially but not exclusively applicable to the technique designated by the expression "transformation of tow fibers into combed fibers". Fibrous products is used herein in a general sense to include a ribbon, web, web or similar assembly of fibers.
When the term 'transformation of tow fibers into combed fibers 9 is meant the process consisting in the manufacture of a fibrous product from a tow or other assembly such as a fiber. cord tape or a bundle of continuous artificial filaments by severing them into fibers of the exact length or alternatively of variable length and giving these fibers the form of an initial fibrous product such as a web capable of being transformed into a ribbon and finally in a combed mass
Various methods already exist in the art of treating textile fibers, for the formation of a web or a sliver of fibers, thus, for example,
in the cotton industry, the fiber is debited by the retaining grippers of a comb in the form of several successive layers so as to form a web, the ends of the fibers of each layer being placed in lines transverse to the grain. nappeo In the case of artificial fibers, there are machines which start from a continuous tow of filaments in spread form and in particular in the form of a strip of fibers,
cut these according to the required lengths while keeping the sections approximately parallel to leave the strip its shape and which force the sections of this strip to overlap so as to form a sheet from which we can tape the fiber ends of each section of the tape again lying roughly transverse to. the web perpendicular to its length or else inclined to a value a little less than the difference in length of the fibers on each side.
The present invention is based on this technical observation that the problem which arises in particular as is known with fibers
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
which give rise, during the subsequent drawing operations, to tufts of fibers is due to the aforesaid alignment of the ends of the fibers and to the insufficient degree of the random distribution of the ends in the entire length of the assembly of the fibers. fibers after the initial sectioning operation. In the case of artificial fibers, the solution of this problem may be made more difficult by a high degree of uniformity in the length of the fibers and by the coherent nature of the filaments.
With a view to solving this problem, it has already been proposed to place and) - you next to several tows and to cause a knife in the form of a spiral-cut roller to act on them and thereby increase the angle of inclination. its ends across the seto But knives of this kind have the disadvantage of damaging by bruising or abrasion or of tearing or even breaking the filaments and thus producing a fibrous material of irregular length
The aim of the present invention is to ensure a more effective distribution of the fiber ends in their initial set after separation,
The invention encompasses a method of producing a fibrous product comprising initially arranging or bringing together the fibers in groups so that these fibers are parallel and spread out so as to form a kind of ribbon transversely to the fibers, to modify the shape. initial form of this tape to give it a second shape representing an elongation with respect to the initial shape thanks to a stretching effecting a longitudinal displacement of the fibers, to assemble successive groups of these fibers, each group having this shape second, so that the fibers grouped according to a certain ton overlap the fibers grouped according to a previous shape, then to compact the groups thus assembled for the further processing and in particular the production of a comb,
a ribbon or a tablecloth
The invention also encompasses a process for the continuous production of a fibrous product in which the groups of fibers are produced successively according to their initial shape by severing from a movable web formed of continuous filaments.
Finally, the invention also encompasses the apparatus for implementing this method according to the modalities which have just been indicated.

Figures 7 and 8 are further detail views showing respectively a group of fibers according to their initial shape and according to their shape after drawing.
FIG. 9 is a detailed perspective view showing how each group of fibers changes from its initial form to its secondary form under the action of stretching.
In the example shown by the drawings, the apparatus is intended to convert continuous filaments into a comb formed of fibers and comprises a rectangular frame 10 forming a frame at the upper part of which are transversely mounted the spaced movable members having for their part. task of receiving and keeping taut, then releasing a continuous sheet of filaments 11.
These retaining members are constituted by upper and lower pairs of feed members each of which consists of an apron 12 and a grooved roller 13, the latter having approximately 5 cm. of diameter These feed units are separated by a distance equal to 1625 mm.
approximately, so that the filaments spread in the form of a web can pass vertically between them, and the length of the part of this web which extends between the feed members is kept under tension by actuating the members of lower feed at a somewhat greater speed, so as to impose a slight stretch on the filaments. The roller belonging to the lower feed member is actuated by a chain 14 and the roller belonging to the lower feed member. upper feed by a chain 15 which receives its movement from the shaft of the lower roller. The apron 12 of each feed member is driven by its friction against the rollers 13.
About halfway down the length of the feeders and one side of the filaments to extend between them is placed a shelf 16 (see Figure 3) consisting of a steel angle or square shaped so as to extend between them. to constitute the fixed cutting edge which is complementary to a movable conteau 17 formed of a rotating disc and described below ,, A screen 18 is also provided next to the tablet 16 to guide the severed ends of the filaments in the commissure of the 'lower feed member and prevent their accidental displacement under the effect of air currents
The disc 17 forming the movable knife is mounted in bearings 19 placed at the end of a horizontal arm 20 which can slide in a support and guide bearing 21.
This arm 20 is masked (see figure 1) by an accordion-shaped casing 22 so as to prevent oil from dripping and falling on the textile material during work o The bearing 21 is fixed at the upper end of a vertical shaft 21a mounted to be able to pivot in bearings 23, 23 fixed to the frame 10.
The arm 20 (see FIG. 2) is driven in a reciprocating movement in its bearing 21, so as to cause the disc 17 forming the movable knife to move back and forth transversely across the web of filaments and along of the shelf 16. This back and forth movement is imparted to the arm 20 by an articulated transmission comprising links 24 and 25 attached to a sleeve 26 freely mounted on a column 27 carried by bearings 28, 28.
This sleeve 26 forming a boss is provided with a radial arm 29 to which is articulated one of the ends of a connecting rod 30 which forms part of a fast-acting return device. This device comprises a pivoting arm 31 with tilting cut off. a longitudinal slot (not shown) in which can slide a cleat 32 fixed to the crank 33 of a rotating vertical shaft 34 supported by bearings 35, 35o This shaft 34 is actuated by pinions 36, 37 with bevel teeth, , The pinion 37 is mounted on an actuating shaft 38. On the cleat 32 is fixed a yoke 39 to which is connected the other end of the connecting rod 30.
The relative movements of the vertical shaft 34, of the crank 33 and of the connecting rod 30 are studied such that, when this shaft 34 rotates, the angularity of the rocker arm 31
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
relative to the crank 33 ensures the rotary knife 17 a rapid return movement after it has cut through the web of filaments which extends between the upper feed member and the feed member The control shaft 34 is actuated by a toothed wheel 40 on which passes a chain 41 which receives its impulse from any suitable force source '(see figure 1)
and the speed of this shaft 34 is suitably adjusted over time with respect to the mechanism ensuring the supply of the sheet of filaments
During its transverse movement ensuring the cutting of the sheet of filaments, the disc 17 forming a rotary knife overlaps the shelf 16 (see FIG. 4) but., In order to avoid the cutting of the sheet of filaments during its return movement after it has severed it, this knife 17 returns to its initial position by taking a spaced path of the tablet 16 and of the filaments The mechanism which, as has just been said, separates the rotary knife 17 from the filaments during its return movement includes a cam 41 (see Figure 2)
mounted on the lower end of the vertical shaft 34 previously mentioned and which acts on a roller 42 mounted on the end of an arm 43 fixed to the shaft 2a carrying the support and guide 21 of the sliding arm 22 of the disc 17.
The construction is designed so that when the disc or knife 17 arrives at the end of its cutting stroke, the cam 41 causes the support 21 to pivot about a vertical axis, which by angular displacement moves the- disc 17 of the layer of filaments before the rapid return device returns it to its initial position Cam 41 finally moves the disc or knife 17 away from the layer of filaments, preparing it for the race next cut, the arm 43 is brought closer elastically to the cam 41, so as to keep the roller 42 in contact with it by a spring 44 working under tension.
The disc or knife 17 rotates under the action of an electric motor 45 placed at some distance from it and by means of a harness of transmission belts 46, 47, 48 and 49, the pulleys of which are mounted at rotation on short shafts extending from the pivots of the links which move the knife arm back and forth. Thanks to this construction, the tension of the transmission belts 46 to 49 is maintained regardless of the position or the movements of the links.
In the construction shown, the linear speed of the advancing movement, in other words the feed of the web of continuous filaments and the speed of the transverse displacement of the cutting disc 17 with respect to this web are calculated so that at each transverse displacement of this disc 17, it cuts directly from the web un.groupe of fibers whose shape shown at 50 is substantially that of a parallelogram (see Figures 1, 5.,. 7. and 9) by cutting the fibers along a length equal to 187 mm, so that for a web having a width equal to 30 cm.
approximately, the fibers are relatively displaced and the leading and trailing edges inclined at an angle of 23 whereas if the transverse knife travel speeds in both directions were equal the corresponding angle would only be 17.
Immediately below the lower feed members is placed the device for stretching the groups of fibers according to the initial shape, in order to move them longitudinally to give them a second shape 50a representing an elongation with respect to the initial or first formo This device includes a conveyor 51 constituted by an endless apron formed of woven or entangled metallic threads, the return strand of which is located below the commissure of the lower feed members, so that the leading edge of the groups of fibers is in contact with the curved periphery where each group of fibers exits from said feed members.
This conveyor 51 is supported and held by a series of rods 52 which extend between two endless chain belts 53,53 themselves supported and driven by pairs of toothed wheels 54, 55 respectively mounted on these shafts 56. and 57. The shaft 56 is journaled in bearings, one of which designated by 58 is visible in the

figure 1. The other shaft 57 is journaled in a console 59. A transmission (not shown) is provided for driving the chain belts 53.53.
The conveyor 51 formed of woven metal threads bypasses a suction box 60. It can be seen from FIGS. 3 and 4 that this box contains interior baffles 61 and 62 arranged so that the suction is limited to the curved part. which receives the fibers and to the lower strand, that is to say to the return strand of the conveyor 51. The suction exerted on the part of the conveyor 51 which receives the fibers is continued as indicated below. pivot 63 mounted on an oscillating shaft 64 is provided to adjust the intensity of the vacuum prevailing in the lower compartment 65 delimited by the baffle 62 and by the walls of the suction box 60.
A device (not shown) is provided for imparting oscillations to register 63 via chain 64a, so that lower compartment 65 and hence lower strand of conveyor 51 are subjected only to to intermittent suction The vacuum is produced by connecting a vacuum cleaner to an inlet port surrounded by a flange.
In figure 3, the end cover 60a is assumed to be removed from the suction box 60 so as not to confuse the drawing.
Below the slatted conveyor 51 is a movable endless apron. 65 which progresses - slowly under the action of a driving device (not shown) in order to transfer the groups of fibers - to a other apparatus with a view to the subsequent treatment which they must undergo
During the operation of the apparatus, the spread web formed of continuous filaments advances from top to bottom under the action of the feed members, and the part of this web between these members is kept stretched while the disc 17 forming the knife moves transversely to this sheet in order to cut therefrom a group of fibers having the required length,
the cut being oblique with respect to the edges of the web as previously stated o Since the leading edge of the group of fibers is also inclined as a result of a previous cut, the shape of the group of fibers should normally represent a parallelogram .
But as the cut is made and long before the severing is complete, the front angle of the fiber bundle has already contacted the curved periphery of the slatted conveyor 51 (see Figure 9) and has already undergone a stretching as this conveyor 51 is operated at a linear speed which is about four times the speed which drives the lower feed members, it is evident that the fibers belonging to each sectioned group are stretched in succession as they are gradually released by the lower feed member, so that when the cut is complete the fibers which adhere to the lower strand of the conveyor 51 are spread according to the formula second represented by 50a.
This form represents an elongation, in other words a deformation by inclination of the initial form in the first form 500 The length of this second form 50a represents about four times the length of the fiber, that is to say the equivalent of what quadruple 'it would be if the rake angle had been increased from about 23 to 60 (see Figures 8 and 9).
This angle can of course be varied by 60 by modifying the relative speed of the conveyor formed of interwoven metal wires.
As shown in Figures 4 and 9, each group of fibers is held against the lower strand i.e. the return strand of the conveyor belt until the second form is complete when it is at the bottom. underside of the suction box 60. When the secondary form is arranged as has just been said, the vacuum which prevails in the lower compartment of the box 60 is interrupted as a result of the register operation 63, which allows the fibers to fall en masse under their own weight but while still retaining their second shape up to the apron 65.
It is the relative speed of this deck which moreover determines the de =. of overlapping successive shaped groups of fibers as they fall on it (see Figures 1, 4 and 6). The parallelism of the individual fibers during this operation is therefore substantially maintained.

As the change in shape of the group of fibers from the initial parallelogram shape resulting from the cut to the second shape constituting an elongated parallelogram is the result of a relative longitudinal displacement resulting in a stretching of the fibers, the elongation or stretching which occurs during the formation of the second shape determines a shape which would not be easily obtained by a severing knife and allows to obtain the advantages of a greater distribution of the fiber ends while retaining the known advantages inherent in the use of a rotary knife compared to knives of other types.
The al. length in question results in final, when the groups of fibers are packed, by a more irregular distribution, in other words obeying more to the chance, of the cut ends that is to say that it gives a more regular, more solid ribbon and better suited to undergo subsequent treatments, especially drawing treatments. The web of groups of cut fibers is brought by the lower apron to a "Gill-Box" which shapes them into ribbons or combed and brings them to the ribbon pot
The invention is of particularly successful application to the continuous processing of relatively fine filaments with a view to the production of elongated fibers. The example described above can be carried out only with satisfactory results for working a rayon tow representing
6800000 as the total denier number formed of 1 1/2 denier filaments for the production of a sliver or combed fiber length of which is 187 mm, 5.
The details of the construction of this apparatus can be modified, without departing from the invention, in the field of technical equivalents.
