<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

AUXILIARY MOTOR FOR BICYCLE OR ANALOGUE.
The invention relates to an auxiliary motor intended more particularly for use on bicycles. The invention aims to achieve a new, simple and useful construction.
According to the invention, the auxiliary motor is executed in such a way that it is mounted in the hub of a wheel and comprises means allowing the wheel to be joined with the normal front fork.
The known embodiments have the drawback inherent in the fact that the arrangement of a wheel provided with a motor is much more complicated than in the case of the present invention.
The invention therefore relates to an embodiment executed in such a way that a bicycle or the like provided with a motor arranged in the hub of a wheel is capable of very simple assembly in the front fork, while that it is always possible to exchange the wheel with its motor for a normal wheel without motor, without the need to employ significant technical measures.
The invention relates, moreover, to an auxiliary motor of this type constructed in a very simple and appropriate manner and being, therefore, of a low cost price.
According to the invention, the mechanism actuating the hub is located between two plates having tenons or lateral appendages or similar elements, these two plates being spaced from each other by a distance such that they can be housed between the two arms of the fork, while the tenons can be placed in apertures provided in a suitable way at the end of the arms of the fork, in the manner of the ends of axles of a front axle normal of a bicycle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It is obvious that the mechanism for rotating the hub must itself be actuated., Which takes place by the crank shaft of the motor. The axle actuating the hub can pass., On one side., The wall. the frame having the shape of a box placed between the arms of the fork. It is not essential to guide this axle through the axle housings of the fork, given that this axle should include bearings therein and the opening has too small a diameter. In order to obtain that the wheel provided with its auxiliary motor has with respect to the fork and the bicycle the same arrangement as a normal front wheel and that, consequently, one is not obliged to change the height of the handlebars. the tenons are placed on the plates, preferably by centering them relative to the hub.
Therefore, the direction of the bicycle is not influenced by the arrangement of the motor on the wheel. The motor shaft can be arranged concentrically with respect to the hub. As follows from what will follow, the motor shaft can also be placed in an eccentric manner and in this case, the tenons allowing the fixing of the assembly in the front fork are placed in the same position. In a concentric way In this case, the height of the handlebars and the arrangement of the wheel undergo some modification, which does not present any serious inconvenience.
The invention will now be explained with reference to the appended drawing in which some embodiments have been shown. It is understood that the drawings which have been drawn up approximately to the actual scale contain only certain details indicated schematically, while certain embodiments are indicated without reference to the drawings.
The drawings show the most popular mode of execution.
Figure 1 is an axial cross section of one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is an elevation with part of the cover, the view being taken from the side opposite to that on which the motor is located, and there is shown in this figure a partial section taken along the line III-III of figure la
Figure 3 shows, on a larger scale, the mounting of the cover on the side plate.
Figure 4 shows a variant.
According to Figure 1, the transmission mechanism, the flywheel., As well as the crank intended to make the connection with the crank shaft are placed between two plates 1 and 2. These plates have lateral tenons.
3 and 4 with enlarged parts 5 and 6; it is thus possible to freely rotate the upper part of the drum formed by the plates 1 and 2, and this between the converging arms 7 and 8 of the fork. The pins 3 and 4 can be placed in the housings provided in the arms of the fork exactly like a normal wheel. On the ends of the tenons are placed the usual nuts 9 and 10, so that the drum can be fixed in place.
According to the example shown, the shaft is centered relative to the hub 11, and flanges 12 and 13 are provided on which the spokes can be fixed.
The actual motor shaft 14 is located entirely inside the box formed by the walls 1 and 2. This shaft is housed in two intermediate plates 15 and 16 having a deformed or curved part.
On one side, the shaft carries between the plate 1 and the plate 15, a crank serving as a link with the crank shaft of the motor which has not been shown. The cylinder is fixed in a plane materialized by the line AA, while it was assumed that the connecting rod had severely deformed ends
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
or curved. This crank is therefore located in a space between the plate 1 and the deformed part of the intermediate plate'15. On the other side, the shaft 14 carries the flywheel 18 located in a manner analogous to the manner in which the crank is housed in the space between the plate 2 and the deformed part of the plate 16.
This flywheel can be fixed on the shaft in various ways. As shown in the drawing, the central hole of the flywheel 18 is fitted without play on the end of the shafts while a safety screw 19 with large head is screwed into the end of the shaft. The way of fixing the crank on the opposite end of the shaft has not been shown. It has been taken into account that the crank may be of such a shape as to allow the installation of the shaft. '' entire mechanism by sliding from the left side
It is obvious that the deformations or the curved parts provided in the intermediate plates 15 and 16 serve to save space.
Between the periphery of the hub 11 and the two plates 15 and 16 there is formed a closed space in which the transmission mechanism is located. This space can in practice contain oil and be filled with it completely or partially so. that the gears which-are housed therein bathe in oil In order to be able to operate the oil filling, an orifice 20 has been provided on the periphery of the hub having a leaktight seal, this orifice can also be used for emptying of oil when the hub is turned so that it is at its lower part.
A toothed wheel 21 is located in the space in question on the shaft 14. This toothed wheel meshes with another wheel 22. This last wheel is idle on a shaft 23 placed in seats 24 and 25. Since the wheel 22 may possibly turn idle on this shaft, the latter may be made integral with or possibly come integral with one of the side plates and, in this case, the other end of the shaft is located in a bearing provided on the intermediate plate.
The wheel 22 is integral with a pinion 26. This pinion meshes with a ring gear 27. This ring gear has internal toothing and is connected directly or indirectly with the hub 11. Figure 1 shows the two possibilities, at the lower part FIG. 1 shows the toothed ring 27 fixed to the hub by means of a screw 28 passing through this hub. Of course, it is possible to use another means of connection. Thus, for example, the toothed ring may come integrally with the hub. It is obvious that when the main shaft 14 turns the hub 11 and the wheel of the bicycle are actuated.
The hub must be able to rotate with respect to the fixed plates 1 and 2 (respectively 15 and 16). Between the plates 15 and 16 and the hub 11 there are stops 29 and 30. These stops are lubricated by the oil which is in the space 31. In order to avoid losses of oil, we have provided linings 32 and 33 which are placed between the plates 1 and 15 (respectively 2 and 16).
The plates 1 and 2 are, in addition, preferably fixed to the plates 15 and 16 by means of screws 34 of which only the axes have been shown in the drawing.
In the upper part of Figure 1, we have shown how to achieve an elastic transmission. The ring gear 27 having internal teeth is placed concentrically with respect to its external surface and at a certain distance from the internal surface of the hub. On its outer face the crown has tenons 35 around which are placed springs 36o. Studs 37 pass through the hub in a sealed manner and their ends emerge inside the space 31, at a certain distance from the ends. tenons 35. The studs 37 enter the coil springs 360 When the ring gear 27 is driven,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the hub 11 is obliged to follow it, thanks to the tension of the springs 36.
In the exemplary embodiment shown, no account has been taken of the possibility of disengaging the transmission mechanism so that when it is desired to stop the engine, it is essential to lift the cover of the gearbox. engine. But it is obvious that it is possible to use any means of disengagement while fully retaining the principle of the invention.
To allow the plates 1 and 2 to be fixed on the arms 7 and 8 of the fork, stirrups 38 and 39 are provided. The fork then rests, in a known manner, in these stirrups and the arms of the fork are clamped. by a clamping plate.
The crank shaft 14 is housed in bearings 40 and ± la To facilitate assembly, the bearing 40 has been given the shape of a thrust bearing and the bearing 41 that of a sliding bearing which can be easily sealed against oil.
To achieve a good seal in the bearing 40, there is provided a seal 42 placed in an enlarged part 43 of the shaft, a space 44 having been provided at this location and serving to receive the seal.
Obviously, one can use a construction in the form of an established box, for example, so that the flywheel and possibly the crank are outside the plates 1 and 2 and hence. , outside the fork arms.
In the example shown, closing lids have also been indicated, although these are not very useful, since there are no rotating parts outside the plates 1 and 20.
If it is desired to give the assembly a form pleasing to the eye and to avoid making part of the mechanism visible, it is possible to use covers 45 and 46. The ornamental cover 46 has been indicated in broken lines. . These covers, part of which with the corresponding part of the plate 2 has been shown on a larger scale in FIG. 3, preferably has a cylindrically curved edge 47 which fits into an annular slot 48 of the plate 2.
If the periphery of the plate 2 is rounded so as to correspond to the shape of the cover, the assembly can be given an aerodynamic shape. The cover can be fixed by means of a few screws 49.
As can be seen from FIG. 2, the cover comprises notches 50 and 51 allowing passage of the fork and of the mudguard supports. On the opposite side, the cover must have a notch for the passage of the cylinder.
The flywheel 18 can be used in a known way to ignite the engine As in the construction shown the flywheel: turns., Even if the engine is stopped, it is preferable to use this flywheel to produce current intended for the engine. lighting of the bicycle. For this purpose, there is placed inside the frame and between the plates 2 and 16 a series of coils 52 distributed in the manner of a ring around the flywheel. Preferably these coils are fixed on axes forming a whole with the plate 2. On the outer surface of the flywheel, small pole pieces 53 are provided. The current produced can be collected at terminal 54.
FIG. 4 shows another embodiment of the new bicycle motor.
The arms of the front fork of the bicycle have been designated by 1 and 2.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
cletteo On these arms, a central axis 3 has been fixed in a known manner by means of nuts 4. Laterally with respect to the fork is arranged a motor cylinder 5 in which is located the connecting rod 6 transmitting to the motor shaft 7 a rotational movement. The construction used for this purpose is known and has not been shown in the drawing.
The motor shaft 7 has in the region included between the two plates 8 and 9 a toothed part 10. In the example shown, it was assumed that this toothing was formed by milling by removing part of the material from 1- 'axis.
This toothing 10 cooperates with a pinion 11 which is located in such a way that it can rotate around the fixing axis 3. This pinion It has a heel 12 whose outer diameter is smaller than the diameter. of the teeth meshing with the teeth 10. This heel also has a set of teeth which meshes with a series of planet wheels 13 of which only one is shown in the drawing. These satellites are idle on the pins 14 fixed in the plate 9. In the exemplary embodiment shown, each pin 14 comprises a ball bearing or a rolling bearing 15, the outer ring of which carries the satellite 13. an external toothing 16 meshing with an internal toothing 17 provided on the hub.
According to the example shown, the hub has been made, for reasons which will be indicated later, with a double wall, but it is obvious that the toothing 17 could be provided directly on the inner face of the element. cylindrical 18 of the hub.
In order to achieve a good implementation of 1-motor shaft., The plates 8 and 9 are handled with appendages directed outwards and forming the housings. In these housings 19 and 20, bearings 21 and 22 have been placed, as well as grease rings 23 and 24. One end of the shaft 7 is coupled with the crank of the motor, while the other ex- end carries the steering wheel 25. In the example shown, the housing of the hub 18 rotates around the edges of the plates 8 and 9. The spokes are fixed in the holes 26 of the hub 18. It was found that it was not it is not necessary to place a gasket between the edges of the plates 8 and 9 and the hub 18.
If a thick oil or grease is placed in the space between these plates, this lubricating or sealing means does not disappear, especially since, during the rotation of the hub, the latter is cooled. It was even noticed that a seal caused friction and local heating leading to leaks. The hub is housed in the plates by means of bearings 27 and 28, these bearings being held between shoulders 29 and 30 of the plates 8 and 9 and the housing of the hub. The plate 8 is reinforced at 31 to have greater resistance and to allow better fixation on the central axis 3.
Preferably, the housing of the hub is made with two walls, as shown, at least at the places where the satellites mesh with a toothing provided on this housing. This gives two concentric walls.
When the outer surface of the inner insulation of the hub housing has holes 33 provided on the periphery and at a certain distance from each other, a stud 34 subjected to the action of a spring and coming from the outside can penetrate into it. those holes. This stud has a button 35.
If the knob 35 is pulled outwardly, the unit 32 is released from the hub 18, so that the wheel of the bicycle can then turn freely.
This may be desirable in the event of a lack of gasoline or engine failure.
In a way which has not been shown, the rod 36 of the stud may include a tenon or a lock so as to ensure a fixed position for this stud. If it is desired to couple 32 in isolation with the hub 18, the stud is inserted into one of the holes 33 of the element 32, by unlocking the stud and turning the wheel.

It also results from the drawing that it is possible, in order to ensure better guidance of the inner element 32 of the hub., To dispose., Preferably between this element and the inner surface of the outer element of the hub. hub 18 of rollers 37 which move between shoulders provided on the inner member of the hub.
