SECTOR LOCK DOOR CONTROL DEVICE IN ISLANDS
NAVIGATION WORKS.
Sector doors made up of cylindrical leaves which pivot about vertical axes to obstruct the airlock in one position and lodge in the expansion chambers in their effective position have already been used in navigation works.
The question of the forces exerted during maneuvering of these sectors on the cables or racks is very important; on the other hand, it is necessary to act constantly and precisely on the speed of operation of the doors in order to make the opening regular and progressive.
The subject of the present invention is therefore an arrangement for controlling the operation of the leaves which satisfies these two conditions.
Each leaf has for this purpose ;? at its upper part, a circular hoop at both ends of which are fixed the ends of a cable or a chain This cable or this chain is applied to the hoop by means of return pulleys It is wound up on the special pulley or the nut of an electric capstan which drives the leaf concerned
The capstans are controlled using a Ward-Leonard unit comprising a variable excitation generator which supplies the gate control motors with direct current and under variable voltage. This group is dependent on pilot motors carried by the leaves.
The control of the operation of a sector door leaf will be described in more detail below, with reference to the appended drawing which shows this leaf in horizontal section.

The pivot axis 2 integral with the supporting spacer 3 of the cylindrical leaf 1 is supported by the cross members 4 sealed under the frame 5, The perimeter of the leaf is provided with a hoop 6 on which is wound in one direction strand 7 of cable 8 and strand 9 in the other direction. The ends of this cable are fixed at 10 and 11 on the frame of the leaf.
This cable passes over the return pulleys 12, 13, the end pulleys 20-21 of the hoop and over the pulley 14 of an electric capstan 15 sealed in the frame. The pulleys 12, 13 are carried by pins fixed, for example, on the ceiling of the chamber 17.
By pulling on one or the other of the strands 7 and 9, the cable driven by the motor of the capstan 15 moves the leaf towards the airlock 16 or towards the expansion chamber 17.
The motor 15 of the electric capstan controlling each leaf is supplied, under variable voltage, by a generator with separate excitation, driven by a three-phase asynchronous motor.
The motors of two corresponding leaves are synchronized so that these two leaves operate in the same way and at an opening speed such that the water flow, both for filling and for emptying the airlock, is always constant regardless of whatever the difference between the downstream and upstream levels.
For this purpose, to the upper articulation of each leaf is coupled a pilot motor 18 supplied with alternating current. The stators of the two motors of the two leaves are electrically connected, phase for phase, with an identical motor housed in the control panel.
The capstan motor 15 is initially supplied with a low voltage, which causes a low opening speed of the leaves.
But the pilot motor 18 driven by the rotation of the leaf causes an increase in the distribution voltage of the Leonard group and consequently an acceleration of the speed of rotation of the capstan and of the opening of the leaves.
This control can be provided from a single control station at a time to adjust the maneuvering speeds and synchronize them.
