PROCEDE ET DISPOSITIF POUR LA FABRICATION DE CORPS EN PEAU ARTIFICIELLE,
EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

PROCESS AND DEVICE FOR THE MANUFACTURING OF ARTIFICIAL SKIN BODIES,
EMI1.1
SUCH AS SAUSAGE 'ENVELOPES'.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of bodies made of artificial skin, in particular synthetic casings for sausages, by winding in the press through annular dies of masses of fibers obtained from animal or plant materials.
The subject of the present invention is a method and a device for these applications.
The method according to the invention is essentially characterized in that 'straightens the fibrous mass in its entirety around the axis before it enters the shaping annular die around an axis coinciding with the axis of the die. ;, preferably under a discharge pressure directed transversely to the discharge direction and tangentially at the opening of the die ;, then this mass is shaped by extrusion through the annular die under the same pressure.
According to the invention it is advantageous with this process that the fibrous mass is exposed during its feeding and straightening in the above-described manner to a varying pressure, preferably to a pressure increasing during the journey. towards the sector.
For the practical implementation of this process, a device is used according to the invention for producing flexible tube-shaped bodies, such as synthetic sausage casings, in which the annular shaping die is used. for extrusion, such a die which comprises a fixed core and which carries between the die body itself and the support of the core, a delivery element which subjects to the delivery pressure mentioned above. thereon the raw material supplied to this discharge element, for example by a funnel or a conduit and suitably prepared, this material being for example a fiber slurry produced from reduced hides.
Such a delivery element, for example a worm screw, not only leads the mass to the die, but places its fibers by straightening them so that they extend tangentially, essentially in the direction transverse to the delivery direction, before queel-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
enter them into the sector; for example, the fibers are straightened on a helix around the theoretical axis.
According to a particular embodiment, if an endless screw is used which tapers off in a conical shape towards the front in a casing which also has a conical hollow space of corresponding dimension with the fibrous mass entering first of all. 'in a disordered way in the hollow chamber undergoes greater friction in the circular direction around the axis of rotation than in the exit direction and the particles seized at the entrance of this chamber by the friction of the The return element and also by the friction against the wall are consequently arranged essentially in the circular or tangential direction around the axis of rotation, the pressure increasing towards the front as a result of the reduction in the cross-section. further helping the recovery.
It has surprisingly been found that a much simpler working process and also a less delicate arrangement of the necessary working elements are made possible by the supply of a fibrous mass which already presents before entering the die proper straightening of the fibers around an axis corresponding to that of the die.
Until now, the manufacture of synthetic sausage casings from fibrous material, in particular from swollen animal fibrous mass, by means of annular dies, has been carried out in such a way that the mass under relatively very high pressures between die elements displaced relative to each other, for example a rotating core and a counter-rotating casing or a stationary core and a rotating casing and in that one was driven Generally the mass from there through an anterior die section having a core and a shell fixed relative to each other.
The two sections then formed the shaping body of the die, that is to say the part in which the body, similar to a tube, was already formed.
By bringing the fibers into the rotating part of the spinneret by means of small narrow tubes, the fibers first of all underwent a parallel straightening between them and were made to set under the action of the rotation in the tangential or radial entry direction a direction of rotation essentially perpendicular to the delivery direction, so that when the two outer layers separated in the direction of the current by the friction against the walls of the fixed part led to a rearrangement of the layers of fibers, the mentioned transverse arrangement was obtained in the various layers.
According to some proposals, it has already been used also parts of dies which have a conical shape, that is to say a conical core with a conical ring which form during the relative movement with respect to each other a tapered interval narrowing. As a result of the fine annular slits in which the fibrous mass, which was not yet straightened, was forced back into both of these known devices, the constructive arrangement was very complicated and costly in consideration. of the pressure to be applied, for the passage through the narrow small tubes $ and then the device was also very prone to plugging and other disturbances.
Especially such dies did not work without oscillations because of the presence of working elements, which were supported in the rotating parts, especially when the fixed inner core used for the re-arrangement of the fibers had to be guided on long working lengths in the rotating casing. As a result of the relative oscillations which in this case occur under the action of the mass to be redispersed, fluctuations take place in the wall thickness of the formed skins.
This results in the production of thin areas in the manufactured tube-shaped bodies, or it makes it necessary not to descend, for safety reasons, below very thick wall thicknesses,
These difficulties naturally had to be greater the smaller the diameter of the casings and the smaller the wall thicknesses. The duration of existence of such sectors comprising
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
parts working in rotation in them was especially very weak due to the high working pressure.
The object of the present invention is to avoid the complicated operations described, hence an irrational preparation of the material which among other things also involved weakening of the fibers during the partially very extensive swelling of the. material, as well as the disturbances produced during the treatment by the support which is not free from oscillations of the working parts to manufacture synthetic casings and skins suitable for other uses which are similar in appearance and to the properties of natural hides, for example casings and which can especially be produced with extremely thin wall thicknesses.
The device aprprié for the implementation of this method is constituted as mentioned in its constitution in principle, by a fi

xe, therefore a core, with the supply channel dE8: ir.mda: J.hUB # <rl.ansce last, the core being fixedly connected to the casing and the support of the rotating element being arranged at the interior of the casing between the die part itself and the support of the fixed part.
This rotating member may for example be in the form of a tapered cylinder in a forward conical shape or of a cone which is supported behind the die core on the core rod, the core rod. where appropriate reinforced and having a concentric bore and which works in the die casing body formed behind the die part in accordance with its outer section. To help with the rectifying effect of the rotating part, it can be formed on its surface with concentric protruding rings or also with helical threads, therefore in the form of an endless screw.
The appended drawing shows schematically, by way of nonlimiting example, an embodiment of such an arrangement according to the invention, the single figure being a vertical longitudinal section of the device.
In detail, 1 designates the rotating part having the shape of a cylinder going by narrowing in a conical shape towards the front and comprising rings 2. This rotating part is rotated by usual control members, for example a pinion 3 driving a toothed crown disposed at the cylindrical end and forming part of a transmission mechanism. The rotating part is supported on the hollow rod of the spindle 4 having the central bore 5, this spindle 4 being positioned fixedly on its side in the casing 6.
The spindle therefore statically forms a rigid body, so that its front part placed in the mouth 8 of the casing 6 forms the die core 9. The support for the rotating part 1 is therefore placed between the support of the die. the fixed part and the die proper 8, 9 with a fixed core.
During the implementation of the process, the mass is fed in continuous working through the loading opening 7 shown schematically, it is gripped by the cone and as a result of the conical narrowing, it is pushed back with increasing pressure in the die. after the mass has undergone straightening around the bore axis in the tapered working chamber between the casing and the tapered section of the rotating part. Compressed air blown through the axial bore 5 prevents sagging of the produced tube until the mass is able of itself to retain the shape given to it.
The arrangement shown naturally allows various variations of embodiment without departing from the scope of the invention, in particular as regards the constitution of the rotating part. As mentioned, the latter can be constituted in the manner of an endless screw to obtain simultaneous axial displacement with an intimate mixing of the mass, an advancing effect directed longitudinally and transversely occurring at the same time with a mass. treated accordingly.
Likewise, the outer casing of the body can be rotated; it can therefore move around a smooth cone, around a worm cone or a fixed or rotating element formed in a corresponding way and it can finally also be
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
provided with screw threads The endless screw itself can also be constituted by several partial endless screws of different pitch heights distributed in the longitudinal direction advantageously in such a way that the discharge pressure increases as it approaches the mouth comprising the fixed core.
The rotating part can also have a cylindrical shape.
However, the worm-like shape is particularly advantageous for devices used to manufacture guts of small gauge, for example guts for ropes, because in particular, the stability and the security of support of the core pin to be mounted fixedly. are therefore larger. Finally, the mouth surrounding the core can also be made to rotate and, moreover, the mouth can have extremely varied transverse slot shapes.
In the practical application, it is observed that for the mass, among other things, one can dispense with a strong swelling, as was necessary until now, partly also in consideration of the constitution of the working elements of the device, although of course such masses can also be treated with advantage in this device, because the arrangement does not require the application of high pressures and the use of thin conduits. It is also possible to use masses which are supplemented with substances which assume the function of an adhesive or an adhesive or a lubricant.
