<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
creux.

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Method and device for transporting wires of low absolute resistance.
When a wire has a low absolute resistance, for example a tensile strength of 40 grs. or less, it is very difficult, and most often even impossible, to move this wire, for example in a tube, by pushing it without pulling it.
Now, it may be necessary to transport the wire by pushing it, when it cannot be moved by pulling it by means of a gripping tool, which is the case, for example, when it is desired that this wire fill a body. hollow, and more particularly, when it is necessary that this filiform filling be distributed as uniformly as possible inside the body
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
hollow.
In accordance with the invention is introduced into a limited space such a wire of low absolute resistance by ensuring that the wire is brought by a fluid agent, preferably a gaseous agent, and is distributed, preferably in a crimped form and also evenly as possible, in limited space.
The invention applies both to metallic threads and to threads made from another material, such as glass threads or artificial silk threads. It should be noted that the fluid carrying the yarn can exert on the latter a tensioning effect such that its tendency to creping does not create any difficulties during its transport.
The invention can be used, for example, in the manufacture of flash lamps which must be provided with a wire emitting actinic light during combustion.
The invention gives very good results when the wire is passed together with the fluid through a pipe which opens into the limited space and of which the inlet orifice for the wire and the fluid is shaped in such a way. so with respect to its end opening into this space, that the speed of the fluid current is reduced when the latter enters the space.
In most cases, such thin threads by their nature have sufficient internal tension so that the thread assumes and retains the desired crimped shape when it enters this space. In the event that the thread does not have sufficient internal tension to take the desired crimped shape, it can be given the necessary tension beforehand, for example, by pulling it on an angular body.
The invention will be better understood by reference to the appended drawing, which shows an embodiment thereof by way of example.

Fig. 1 is a side view and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken along the line I-I.
1 is a glass bulb which has to be filled with a thin wire 2 having an absolute tensile strength of..25 grs. For this purpose, first of all, through the narrow funnel-shaped orifice 3, into the guide tube 4, a portion of sufficient length of the wire 2, then compressed air is sent through the pipe 5. This introduction of the yarn can be effected by eliminating the internal tensions and hence the tendency to creping over a suitable length. For a magnesium wire, this operation can be carried out, for example, by bringing it to a temperature of 300 to 400 ° C. for approximately 5 seconds.
Then the taut part 2 of the wire is introduced into the guide tube 4 through the narrow orifice 3, over a length such that, when compressed air is introduced, the wire 2 is driven, which causes the rotation feed spool 7.
The compressed air flows in the direction of the arrows 12 because the section of the tube 4 is much larger than that of the inlet port 3. The rapid air flow brings the thin wire 2 towards the bulb 1 and at the same time stretches it inside the tube 4 so as to avoid stagnation in the transport of the wire due to the formation of buffers inside the tube 4. Such buffers can be created when it occurs. considerable friction between the wire and the wall of the tube. In the end 6 of the tube 4 the speed of the air flow is reduced so that regular filling of the ampoule 1 is ensured. The wire 2 is wound on the supply spool 7 threaded on the sleeve 8. The latter is integral with the disc 9 which can be clamped against the brake shoe 10 by the compression spring 17.
Bushing 8 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
disc 9, with the spool 7 arranged on the sleeve, can rotate on the fixed shaft 13, as can the cable pulley 14. The arm 22 being immobilized during the rotation of the spool 7, a bearing is provided between them ball 15. When the spool 7 as well as the disc 9 and the sleeve 8 are immobilized, the cable pulley 14 must be able to rotate and for this purpose it is provided with a ball bearing 16. The shaft 13 rests in the support 19 and is held by the adjusting screw 20. The disc 9 can be moved, together with the spool 7, on the shaft 13 against the compression spring 17, so that the surface of friction 18 drives the disc 9 with the coil 7 during its rotation. The rope pulley 14 is driven by a motor not shown in the drawing.
The rotation of the spool 7 and of the disc 9 is caused by pressing the button 24 which is permanently fixed to the bar 23 and to the arm 22. When the button 24 is pressed the parts 15, 7 and 9, movable on the shaft 13, are driven by the arm 22 against the compression spring 17, so that the part 25 of the bar 23, which has a reduced diameter, comes opposite the channel 26, so that the compressed air enters the guide tube 4 through the channel 26 and the pipe 5. When the button 24 is pressed again, the disc 9 is clamped against the friction surface 18 of the continuously driven pulley 14, this which causes the rotation of the disc 9 with the socket 8 and the coil 7. At this moment begins the feeding of wire and, consequently, the filling of the bulb 1 ..
The air supply is not influenced when the button 24 is pressed again, since the length of the part 25 is greater than the diameter of the channel 26. The thread unwinding from the spool 7 passes through the slot 32 of the peg 34 fixed in an adjustable manner on the wheel 28, and penetrates through the hole 3 in the guide tube 4. By adjusting the slot 32, which is done by rotating the peg 34 on its
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
longitudinal axis, the yarn can be given the desired creping tendency. The wheel 28 is driven by the cable pulley 14 in such a way that the peripheral speed of the wheel 28 is 10 to 15% greater than the speed at which the wire 2 leaves the spool 7, which has the effect that the force with which the wire unwinds from the spool 7 increases so as to ensure this unwinding at the desired speed.
Using the nut 33, the wheel 28 is firmly wedged on the shaft 29, on which the rope pulley 27 is also firmly wedged.
The shaft 29 with the nut 33, the wheel 28 and the cable pulley 27 are supported by the bearing 30 permanently mounted on the base 31.
After filling the ampoule 1 with the desired quantity of thread, the button 24 is released, so that the compression spring 17 breaks the coupling between the wheel 14 and the disc 9, the latter being immediately braked by the brake shoe 10 and the air line closing shortly thereafter. Then the filled bulb is moved to the right and the wire is cut.
The reciprocal relations of the peripheral speed of the coil-magazine 7, the internal diameter and length of the tube 4, the speed of the air flow in this tube, as well as the internal diameter and length of part 6 and, moreover, dimensions of the ampoule 1 and of its neck 11, influence the final result of the described method. These relationships must be chosen judiciously in relation to the properties of the yarn considered, if it is desired to have a filling such that it has no knots or tufts, or that in other words the density of the filling is substantially uniform everywhere. inside the ampoule, and the wire filling resiliently bears against the wall of the ampoule, so that this filling is enclosed so to speak without the possibility of movement.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
When using a wire having a diameter of 35 microns, made of an alloy of aluminum and magnesium with 8% magnesium, and it is desired to introduce 10 m of this wire into a bulb having a volume of about 100 cm3 and an outer diameter of 55 mm., the neck having a length of about 50 mm. and an outer diameter of about 30 mm., good results are obtained by employing a guide tube 4 having a total length of 170 mm. and the flared end 6 of which has a length of 40 mm. The diameter of the inlet port 3 is 0.12 mm, that of the tube 4 is 1.9 mm. and the opening of the flared end 6 is 13 mm. Under these conditions, compressed air can be used having an overpressure of 2 atmospheres, the speed at which the wire moves being 1 m per second.
These bulbs filled with wires make it possible to produce excellent flashing lamps, of which Fig. 3 shows an embodiment.
The bulb 35 contains the wire filling 36 made of the aforementioned material, as well as the supply conductors 37. The latter carry the filament 38 which contains the ignition material 39. In addition, the bulb 35 is filled with 'a gaseous atmosphere of oxygen at a pressure of about 1/3 atm.
The flash lamps produced in accordance with the invention have various advantages. In the first place the combustion is complete, so that the maximum yield of actinic light is ensured. Thanks to this complete combustion, at the same time, a phenomenon which often occurs with incomplete combustion is avoided, namely the production of unburned molten metal particles which strike the wall of the bulb and can cause the latter to burst. . This incomplete combustion could be prevented by employing more oxygen per unit weight of actinic material, but in the flashlamps which are the subject of the invention there is no need
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
of a large excess of oxygen, so that relatively low gas pressure is sufficient.
In this way the risk of the bulb bursting due to the high gas pressure produced during combustion is at the same time avoided.
With these flash lamps it is possible to produce not only a short duration flash, for example of 1/49 sec., But also a very short "contact" duration, for example of 1/25 sec. In addition it has been found that the contact time is very constant for these lamps produced in series. By “contact time” is meant in this case the time interval between the moment of supplying the current and the moment of the start of the emission of actinic light.
