<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Combined device for driving the driving wheel and starting the engine for bicycle motors, motorcycles and the like.
The present invention relates to a device comprising in combination means allowing the starting and driving of the driving wheel at different speeds for motorized vehicles of the type of those called bicycle-motors, light motorcycles and the like.
In general, a speed change is provided for motorcycles which makes it possible, for a given speed of the engine, to drive the drive wheel at different peripheral speeds. These speed changes are made using different sets of pulleys or pinions.¯ made integral, some with a drive shaft, the others with a related shaft - with the drive wheel; these sets are mounted in a fixed gearshift casing to form a box made integral with the engine.
These gearboxes are of a weight and volume
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
relatively high and their application is hardly suitable when it comes to low power motors, such as those mounted on bicycle motors. This is why until now the shaft of small displacement motors has been in direct relation with the driving wheel of this cycle enre. It follows that the drive pinion set on the motor shaft has an average number of teeth, compared to the toothed pinion set on the drive wheel so that the speeds allowed in leveling are relatively low , while on hills the user is obliged to act on his pedals in order to increase the engine torque.
In addition, the bicycle motors must necessarily be started by starting the cycle, which has many drawbacks.
The object of the present invention is to obviate the aforementioned drawbacks and resides essentially in that the cylinder or rotary housing of the freehub gearshift mechanism fixed to the frame of the cycle is in relation on the one hand. with the drive pinion, on the other hand with the cycle pedal, while the drive pinion for said speed change is in relation to the drive wheel.
In the accompanying drawing is shown by way of example an embodiment of the present invention.
Figure 1 shows in elevation, a motorized bicycle provided with a combined drive device, at different speeds, and start-up.
Figure 2 shows in perspective the schematic device of the present invention on a larger scale.
According to the embodiment shown in the drawing, the shaft 1 of the internal combustion engine 2 carries a motor pinion 3. This drive pinion is connected, by a chain 4, with an auxiliary pinion 5 wedged on a rotary cylinder 6 of a change of speed of the type with fixed axis and satellite.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The mechanism of the satellite speed change 7 itself will not be described in detail, since this type of speed variator is sufficiently well known. The engine 2 is located in the opening of the frame and the fuel tank at the front of it.
On the rotary cylinder 6 forming the gearbox is arranged a freewheel 8 for starting, a pinion which is in relation with the toothed wheel 9 of the crankset, by the intermediary of a chain 10. The axis 11 fixed of the satellite gearshift is held by its ends, using known means, to the frame of the cycle and perpendicular to the plane thereof; a hollow formed in this axis passes the cable 12, with a view to controlling the gear change. A speed change thruster 13 is connected with the pinion ¯14 of the driving wheel by a chain 15 to transmit to the said wheel the propulsive force received by the pinion 14 and for the selected speed.
The motor pinion 3 thus indirectly attacks the hub of the rear wheel, the transmission passing through the speed change 6, while this same speed change also serves as an intermediary for the launch of the engine by the impulse given by the pedal. The motor 3 is started up as follows: using the pedals, the toothed wheel 9 of the crankset is rotated in order to drive the starting freewheel 8 fixed on the speed change rotating box 6, so that said box is set in motion by driving drive pinion 3 with it via auxiliary drive pinion 5.
As soon as the motor is running, the toothed wheel 9 can be immobilized and will not be driven by the motor at all, because of the freewheel 8, the pawls of which only act for one direction of rotation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
When the gear shift lever 16 is in neutral, only the gearbox 6 and the auxiliary gear 5 will be driven. For the advancement of the cycle, it will suffice to introduce the gear lever 16 in the position of one of the speeds provided for in the satellite gearshift, to see the propeller pinion 13 drive at the selected speed and transmit its speed. torque by chain 15 to the driving wheel of the motor bicycle.
The change from one speed to the other is easy from the fact that the drive pinion 13 or propeller is mounted in the known manner on a rotary housing, which will also make it possible, by decompressing the engine, to see the cycle continues its trajectory, as a result of the inertia acquired.
Likewise in the event of engine failure, it will be possible through the pedals to set the cycle in motion.
Indeed, the force will be transmitted from the toothed wheel 9 to the starting freewheel 8, so as to drive the box 6 which will cause the drive pinion 13 to move at the desired speed, in relation to the pinion 14 of the driving wheel.
One of the advantages of the invention lies in the possibility of driving the driving wheel at different speeds, with respect to a constant number of revolutions of the small motor, and this with the aid of a gear change mechanism at different speeds. satellite.
The invention has been described and illustrated by way of indication and in no way limiting, and it goes without saying that numerous modifications can be made to its details without departing from its spirit.
