<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Le procédé, objet principal de l'invention, con- siste à préparer des bourrelets en matière élastique, par exemple du caoutchouc, dont la section droite et la longueur sont déterminées selon l'organe à garnir; le bourreletprésen- te une rainure radiale sur toute sa longueur et les deux bouts libres de ce bourrelet sont fixés l'un à l'autre par collège ou par vulcanisation, en sorte de former un anneau continu, la fente radiale longitudinale étant dirigée vers l'intérieur ou vers l'extérieur de l'anneau ainsi constitué, selon que la garniture doit être appliquée extérieurement ou intérieu- rement ; l'anneau élastique ainsi constitué doitprésenter un diamètre tel que le diamètre du fond de rainure soitégal ou légèrement différent du diamètre du bord à garnir;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Method and elastic protective elements".
The invention relates to a new, efficient and economical means for protecting the edges of any thin wall.
This means aims at the systematic application of an elastic lining capable of being fixed along the edges to be protected and this elastic lining is conditioned so as to be able to be applied quickly and without any tools and to be able to be maintained in the correct position whatever. whatever the handling of the parts thus furnished.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention also relates to the elastic protective elements used in application of this new process and these elements can be prepared and delivered ready to be put in place by said process.
The method, the main object of the invention, consists in preparing beads of elastic material, for example rubber, the cross section of which and the length are determined according to the member to be lined; the bead has a radial groove over its entire length and the two free ends of this bead are fixed to each other by college or by vulcanization, so as to form a continuous ring, the longitudinal radial slot being directed towards the the inside or the outside of the ring thus formed, depending on whether the filling is to be applied outside or inside; the elastic ring thus formed must have a diameter such as the diameter of the bottom of the groove equal to or slightly different from the diameter of the edge to be lined;
it is then sufficient to fix the lining on said edge by causing the latter to penetrate the groove, radially longitudinal and this fixing can, in certain cases, be done by slightly deforming the elastic ring so as to introduce a certain ten - permanent tension in the binding.
The elastic protective elements are therefore in the form of beads of practically indeterminate length. These beads -couvent have any section appropriate to the different applications and, finally, these beads have a longitudinal radial groove, the width of which will be determined taking into account the thickness of the wall of the objects to be filled.
This process and these elastic elements are very simple but they solve an extremely delicate problem.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in very many cases of practice, in particular when it is necessary to protect the edges of enamelled sheet metal, to line the edges of relatively thin sheet metal in order to rule out a cause of injury, etc ...
By way of example, without any generally whatsoever limitation of the subject of the invention, some embodiments are described in more detail below and shown diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings in which: FIG. 1 represents a cross section through a elastic element shaped according to the invention and FIG. 2 shows, in perspective view, a section of such an elastic element.
It will be noted in these two figures that, in this case, the elastic element is formed by a cylindrical bead 1 - presenting a groove directed radially and extending over the entire length of the cylindrical element. one can produce such elastic elements in practically infinite length and it will suffice to cut them into sections, the length of which will be determined by the lining to be produced. Moreover, these elastic elements may have not only very different dimensions, but also a cross section in principle any as long as they meet the function of the lining.
By way of examples, Figures 5 to 6 show, in section, different cross sections showing the numerous possibilities in the manufacture.
In all these cases, it will be necessary, in order to comply with one of the essential characteristics of the invention, to make or provide in the elastic element, a longitudinal radial groove as explained above.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
FIGS. 9 to 10 are a summary diagram of the embodiments which make it possible to better understand the characteristics of the improvements of the invention and also all the possibilities thereof.
The elastic lining according to the invention can be applied both externally and internally.
FIG. 9 shows, in front view, an annular gasket 3. it was produced by joining the two ends of a section of elastic gasket and these two ends cut into whistles were juxtaposed and glued by a suitable adhesive. . FIG. 10 shows a similar execution but in which the two ends juxtaposed at 4, have been vulcanized. Whatever the method of securing the two free ends; the radial groove can be directed towards the outside of the ring or towards the inside of the ring.
FIGS. 11 to 16 show schematically the application of such a ring around an object, that is to say that the lining is external, in which case the radial groove 2 is internal.
In FIGS. 11 and 12, the application of such a gasket 1 has been shown diagrammatically around the lid ± of a container and the upper edge ± thereof. The cover gasket allows both to protect the latter against sudden contact with any hard body and provides a seal when the cover is put in place. The gasket 1 surrounding the edge 6 of the container protects the latter against any impact from a hard object capable of destroying or blowing up the enamel and at the same time it protects against the dangers of violent contact between the hands. andsaid straightened edge.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
FIG. 14 shows said cover 2 in perspective view with partial section. This cover is particularly characteristic in that it is lined, along its edge, by an elastic element in accordance with the invention and its button 7 is produced by an elastic lining which is the subject of another patent pending. on behalf of the same Applicant. Figures 15 and lo show schematically the total protection of such a cover which, whatever its position, always rests only by elastic elements.
.Figure 17 shows schematically the application of elastic elements 1 on the edge of orifices ± made in the walls. it suffices, as said previously, to achieve this application, to have the radial groove outwards. automatically, a means of protecting the edge of the sheet is produced at the same time as a particularly happy lining and a means of gripping and handling the object thus furnished since it will be possible to pass the hands through the openings 2 and to support the object even if it is heavy, the elastic linings 1 being interposed between the hand and the sheet.
FIG. 1a moreover indicates a mixed application, that is to say the application, in the same device, of fittings which are both exterior and interior and come into contact with one another. In fact, the cover 5 is provided with an external gasket 1, while the edge of the orifice normally blocked by said cover 5 is also provided with an elastic gasket 9 in accordance with the invention. The two gaskets can enter. in contact and thus automatically form a sealed closure by local elastic deformations of the two linings thus in contact.
