<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CARBU EQUIPMENT-
RATION, FOR ENGINES @ INTERNAL COMBUSTION ".
This invention relates to an improved carburizing apparatus for an internal combustion engine.
According to the present invention, in apparatuses for carburetion for internal combustion engines it is interposed between the carburetor and the crankshaft of the engine (when the engine is adapted to compress the fuel mixture in the crankcase of the engine. crankshaft) or the cylinder or cylinder block of the engine (when the fuel mixture is supplied directly from the carburetor to the cylinder, or to the cylinders) a valve controlled conduit to conduct the fuel mixture from the carburetor to the crankcase from the crankshaft of the engine or to the cylinder or cylinders of the engine, said

valve being produced by a reciprocating spool, controlled by the motor,
which is located between the outlet end of the duct and the crankcase of the crankshaft or the cylinder or the cylinder block and which is actuated in such a way that it is brought into the closed position, before the compression of the mixture begins.
Preferably, the carburetor is completely enclosed in an enclosure, the end of the air inlet of which is closed by a filter to remove dust, drops of moisture and other foreign matter, from the air entering the chamber. enclosure, the other end of said enclosure forming an integral part of the crankcase of the crankshaft of the engine, or of the cylinder or of the cylinder block, or capable of being attached thereto, and comprising the duct for the mixture thus formed.
If desired, the air can be led to the inlet of said enclosure by means of a cover in the form of a cap of rubber or other suitable material in watertight connection with said enclosure.
In order for the invention to be clearly understood and easily implemented, reference will now be made to the attached sheet of drawings which illustrate the embodiment of the invention with the aid of an exemplary embodiment and where:
Fig.I is a side elevational view partially in section of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 is a partially sectioned plan view and Fig, 3 is an end view with the filter omitted to show the interior of the enclosure.
Referring to the drawings, the mechanism provided in this invention comprises an enclosure 1 which can be attached to the crankshaft housing, or form a whole with the latter, as in 2 (with engines designed for compression in the crankshaft housing) or form a whole with the cylinder block of the engine when the mixture, coming from the carburetor is brought di-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
directly to the cylinder, and its position relative to either of these parts, may be appropriate to the best of their particular conformity.
The enclosure 1 completely encloses a carburetor 3 of any known model and the end of the air inlet 4 of the enclosure is provided with a filter 5 to remove dust and moisture from the enclosure. air before it enters the enclosure. The filter 5 may comprise a single layer of material or it may comprise two or more layers of the same or different filter material.
If desired, the air can be brought into the enclosure 1 through the filter 5 by means of a cap-shaped cover 6, preferably of rubber, which embraces the inlet end 4 of the. 'enclosure 1 in a watertight manner and which is designed with an air inlet 7 which communicates directly or indirectly with the atmosphere.
The enclosure 1 is designed with openings to receive the controls 8 of the butterflies or control valves and these openings are provided with airtight rubber closures 9, as is also another opening in the enclosure 1, through which passes a supply pipe 10 bringing the fuel to the carburetor 3.
The fuel mixture coming from the carburetor 3 enters a pipe 11 with a conical inlet, which serves to support the carburetor and communicates with a passage 12 opening into the crankshaft housing under the pistons. The mixing flow to passage 12 is controlled by a robust valve in the form of a reciprocating slide valve 13, which in turn covers and uncovers the end of the outlet, of smaller diameter from the end of the pipe. 11, where it meets passage 12.
In cases where the mixture is led directly to the cylinders the crankcase is fixed to the engine cylinder block and the spool 13 is then arranged to operate between the end of the outlet
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of the line 11 and the inlet lumen or the inlet of the cylinder tubing to control the amount of mixture passing to the cylinder, to the cylinders.
The operation of the spool 13 is synchronized with the movement of the piston or pistons, and is carried out by a pair of angled levers housed in recesses 14 in the wall of the crankshaft housing and articulated to oscillate on pivots 15. The angled levers have the ends of their arms 16 joined by articulation to the drawer 13 and the ends of their other arms 17 are provided with studs 18 supporting rollers I8a or the equivalent, which engage in eccentric grooves 19 formed in the outer faces of two flywheels or discs 20 controlled by the motor.
The spool 13 can suitably slide between the opposite faces of the supply line 11 and the crankcase duct which are separated by a spacer or washer 21 to form the necessary space or can slide the spool 13 The spool 13 may be suitably lubricated, and cams, cranks, or the like, may be employed to operate the spool 13 instead of the eccentric grooves 19 made in the discs 20.
The enclosure 1 can be made in any way desired and can include an isolated unit, or it can be made in two or more parts. The cover 6 can also be made of metal instead of rubber and can constitute part of the enclosure 1.
With the aid of the present invention, as described above, it will immediately be seen that the apparatus for carburizing can operate under the most unfavorable atmospheric conditions. In cases where the motor is required to operate below the surface of the water a device of the periscope type, can be adjusted to extend from the passage 7 of the cover 6, to open above the level of the water.
The invention (although not limited here) is particularly applicable
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
This is not the case for two-stroke engines having compression in the crankshaft housing and would in fact have advantages over engines where the fuel mixture flow is controlled by the piston. The engine can also be kept clean, since no fatty mixture can come in contact with metal surfaces, and because moisture in the form of drops cannot enter the carburetor, engine parts are not damaged. influenced by this humidity.
