<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
la fig. 2 est une vue en coupe de cet élément; la fige 3 représente à plus petite échelle un appareil complet constitué de deux éléments;;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Compressors for supplying gasoline combustion engines.
The subject of the invention is a compressor intended more particularly for supplying internal combustion engines with gasifier gas, with a view to providing, in engines designed for supplying with usual gasoline gas ;, a rate compression high enough to allow supply with gasifier gas.
The compressor according to the invention is a volumetric pulsating compressor consisting essentially of a box comprising two cups assembled edge to edge between which is arranged an elastic membrane and one of which is connected to the exhaust gas pipe forming the engine gases of the compressor, while the other is connected by suitable pipes, to the generator on the one hand and to the engine of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the other. The oscillations of the diaphragm under the action of the exhaust gases thus cause suction in the gasifier and then discharge into the engine.
Preferably, the complete apparatus consists of two elements as described above connected respectively to the exhaust of two cylinders, one of which is in compression while the other is in depression, so as to give the together a double-acting pulsating movement suppressing water hammer.
Instead of causing the engine exhaust gases to act directly on the diaphragm, it is possible, in accordance with a variant of the invention, to cause them to act on an intermediate piston to the rod of which the pulsating diaphragm is coupled; this arrangement prevents the premature destruction of the membrane by the hot exhaust gases and by gunshots, and also eliminates the heating of the gases of the gasifier which are thus no longer in contact at all via the membrane with the gases exhaust acting as the driving fluid of the diaphragm.
In accordance with this arrangement, the pulsating diaphragm of the compressors is therefore coupled to the rod of a piston which moves inside a cylinder provided with the side through which the exhaust gases arrive with suitable ports.
According to a second characteristic of the present invention, there is placed in the part of the compressor corresponding to the gas supplying the engine and between the suction and delivery valves for this gas, a defecting plate of suitable curved shape allowing to suppress the turbulence of the gas mass.
-The appended drawing makes it possible to better understand the invention, of which it represents two exemplary embodiments.
The, fig. 1 is a plan view of an element of the apparatus according to the first embodiment from the side connected to the exhaust, -
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
fig. 2 is a sectional view of this element; FIG. 3 represents on a smaller scale a complete apparatus made up of two elements ;;
fig. 4 shows an external view, partially cut away, of the compressor according to the second embodiment, - - Fig. 5 shows in section the piston on which the pulsating membrane is attached; pin 6 is a section of the compressor provided with the deflector plate according to the invention; pin 7 is a plan view thereof, one of the cups or shells of the compressor being removed.
The pulsation compressor element shown in FIGS 1 and 2 consists essentially of two hemispherical cups 1 and 4 assembled by their edge forming a flange;, with the interposition of an elastic membrane 3 forming a seal.
At the center of the bowl 1 is adapted a pipe 4 intended to be connected to the exhaust pipe of one or a group of cylinders of an explosion engine. In this bowl 1, there are also orifices 5 on which the membrane 6 tends to rest under the effect of a spring 6 and which serve to evacuate the gases as will be explained. on the bowl 2 are provided pipes 7 and 8 for 8 5trJs respectively connected to the gas after the filter and purifier.
the engine intake manifold, the latter connection being made either directly, evening, via an appropriate injection member such as a Giffard. In these pipes 7 and 8 -are arranged two valves 9 and 10 acting without contrary the valve 9 opening under the effect of a vacuum in the chamber 11 formed under the diaphragm 3, the valve 10 s 'opening on the contrary under the effect of an overpressure in this chamber.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
It works as follows: gases from the exhaust manifold. and opening into the tube 4 push back the membrane 3 by compressing the spring 6 (position 3a). When the pressure resulting from an exhaust pulsation ceases, the spring returns the diaphragm to position 3, allowing the exhaust gases to escape through orifices 5 and forming a vacuum in chamber 11. Under l 'effect of this emptying the gases coming from the gasifier enter through the pipe into chamber 11. The following exhaust pulsation pushes the diaphragm back to position 3a, which has the effect of expelling in the pipe 8, towards the engine , the gases sucked in at the previous pulse.
Preferably, as has been explained, two elements A, A ', as described, will be coupled together, this coupling being effected for example by means of spacers 12, arranged at the periphery of each element. In this case, the two exhaust gas inlet pipes 4 and 4 'are connected to two cylinders of the engine corresponding to two different times, respectively suction and compression. The pipes 7 and 7 'on the one hand 8 and 8' on the other hand, are on the other hand connected to common conduits 13 and 14, putting them in connection with the gasifier and the engine intake. The soft elements work in exactly the same way but following staggered times so as to eliminate the blows of loosening, particularly at start-up.
The apparatus may also be fitted with a device enabling mechanical action on the membrane by means of a needle or a hand piston to activate the draft at the time of ignition of the fireplace. without starting the engine.
The apparatus which has just been described and which can, of course, be executed in all shapes and sizes appropriate to the type and power of the engine considered can
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
position yourself anywhere in the vehicle, but preferably near the exhaust manifold. It ensures maximum pressure when driving slowly (idling, climbing hills, etc.). By virtue of its action as a vacuum cleaner, it ensures perfect combustion of the fuel at the gasifier hearth. It does not require any lubrication or maintenance or any modification of the engines to which it is suitable.
Finally, it increases the power and efficiency of the gasifier engine and allows departures directly on the gas from the generator without any addition of gasoline gas.
It is found in the embodiment of FIG. 4 the soft cups or shells 1 and 2 between which the pulsating diaphragm 3 is placed, the cup 1 being provided with two pipes 7 and 8 with valves S and 10 communicating respectively with the gasifier and the engine intake manifold.
The membrane is here attached to the rod 15 of a piston 16 in any suitable way. For example: the end of this piston rod can be threaded and the membrane can be clamped between two nuts 17 and 18 screwing on the threaded end of the piston pull, a lock nut 19 being able to be provided to immobilize the fixing. In addition, a bearing plate 20 can be interposed between the bolt 18 and the membrane. Optionally another similar plate could also be interposed between the nut 17 and the membrane 3.
This piston 16 can move inside a cylinder --It which is fixed in any suitable way to the bowl or shell 2 of the pulsation compressor, this cylinder being in communication, on the side opposite to the side by which it is fixed to the bowl 2, with the arrival of the exhaust gases by means of a connection pipe 4.
The cylinder 21 is provided, on the side through which the exhaust gases arrive, with slots 23 through which these gases can escape once they have played their driving role for the membrane 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
When the pressure of the exhaust gases ceases to act on the piston 16 (due to the fact that the ports 23 are uncovered) the piston 16 is returned to its original position by a spring 24 which is interposed between the outer surface of the piston. shell 2 and a washer 26 clamped for example between two nuts 26 at the other end of the piston rod.
The operation of the improved compressor which has just been described is identical to that of freezes 1 and 2.
The exhaust gases arrive through the pipe 4 and drive the piston 16 which transmits its movement to the diaphragm 3. The latter is pushed towards the bowl 1 and during this operation the gasifier gas which is to the right of this diaphragm is returned to the engine, through the tube 8. When the piston 16 has uncovered the ports 25, the exhaust gases escape through these ports; the piston 16 returns to its initial position, recalled by the spring 24. The membrane is therefore returned to the bowl 2 by sucking through the pipe 7, the gasifier gas which then fills the cavity located to the right of the membrane 3, and so on.
Thanks to the arrangement which has just been described, that is to say thanks to the fact that the membrane 6 is actuated by the intermediary of the piston 16, the exhaust gases are not in contact with the membrane which is therefore protected against gunshots from the exhaust, In addition :, the gasifier gases located on the other face of the diaphragm 3 cannot be heated by the exhaust gases since there is no has no more contact wall between these gases.
As seen in Figs. 6 and 7 of the appended drawing, a deflector plate 27 may also be provided in the chamber of the compressor reserved for the motive gas. This plate is for example made of sheet metal and has a curved shape of elongated sinusoids; it is fixed on two of its sides ab and a'b 'for example by means of an autogenous weld, on the body of the com-

presser, or in any other suitable way.
This part is arranged between valves 7 and 8.
